Looks like Chapman gave the game to Redlands and Redlands stepped up and won it

"Redlands managed just 286 yards of offense, but converted when it needed to most. The Bulldogs were 10 of 16 on third downs and completed a 22-yard pass on a fourth-and-long on their final drive."

George Thompson - From what I can remember of the NAIA II playoff selection a team needed to be ranked in the top 25 to be considered for a playoff bid regardless of whether they won their conference or not.  Is that true?

If so, that seems to be a needed change for D3 especially if the selection committee continues to use "strength of schedule" as a criteria for selection.  Let's face it, there are a handful of programs around the nation that are in it to win the national title every year and the bulk of these teams seem to come from specific conferences.  Then there are a bunch of teams content to compete for their league title and a first or second round drubbing.

When Whitewater's seeding is hurt by their so called weak "SOS" a change needs to be made - no one really wants to play them or Mt Union during the regular season and the teams that do are either D2 or NAIA.   For Keith to even bring up UWW's SOS as a factor for them not getting a #1 seed is a BCS approach to justifying their selections.

I may be biased but I would bet that Linfield, PLU, and Willamette would finish 1-2-3 in many of the conferences with AQs.  I would expect that St Thomas, Bethel, and St. Johns would as well.  You could say the same for UMHB, Hardin Simmons, and the ASC's 3rd play team.

Let's figure out a way to force some of the AQ conferences to improve their programs  competitiveness so that they actually deserve to be in the playoffs.  That way deserving teams who try to schedule strong non conference games and end up losing a couple games aren't excluded.

Andy,

I never knew the NAIA rules.    Your 2nd through 5th paragraphs are spot-on right!

I suggest we all, from many strong conferences, write Joy Solomen, chairwoman of the NCAA-Division III selection committee and voice your thoughts.

I am composing my ideas on this.    But, briefly, teams with 7-3, 6-4 and 5-5 records should NOT get automatic playoff spots even if theY "won" their conference.    You are right: the 2nd and 3rd place teams from the NWC,  ASC,  WIAC,  OAC,  MIAC and IIAC would highly likely beat those weak conference champs.

Both PLU and Redlands were robbed.   The East Coast bias, because of their big population, applies.

I will say more about this soon.   In the meantime,

GO CATS! GO!

RFB, Points well taken!

CrashDavis, You can't give something away unless someone is willing to take it. Redlands stepped up and took it.

Bottom line, whoever scores the most points wins. In the end, stats are for losers.

No excuses or rationalization from this poster.

AGREED...That is why Redlands is 8-1 and Chapman was 4-5 this year. The only stat that has any meaning is the Scoreboard.
Chapman lost to Redlands, Cal Lu, CMS  the top 3 teams in the SCIAC. Chapman only beat the 4-5-6-7 teams...Chapman football program has a long way to go with only 2 winning season in last 10....

Both PLU and Redlands were robbed.

The primary purpose of setting the playoff brackets is to eliminate the SCIAC team as soon as possible. The SCIAC will always be robbed, screwed, and cheated. Whatever the selection committee says to the contrary is a flat-out lie.

CLU on the road. CLU having to play a team it already beat in a 1st round game. Redlands left out.......It is apparent the NCAA BIAS against SoCal teams especially the SCIAC in football this year.

Redlands should be playing at Linfield. CLU should be hosting their 1st  round and not playing Linfield.

I guess things are not logically or fairly done when the NCAA is in charge.

Nihon Tiger

But we're a "historically weak" conference!  Historically, we didn't beat the number 1 seed on the road in the first round as the number two regional seed in 2008!  Oh, and in 2005!  Why doesn't our conference have as good of an all-time playoff record as the conferences whose Regional 6/7-seeds get home games in the first round every year at the SCIAC's expense?!

Oh, right.  So that Alabama football and Kansas basketball can get 10-car police escorts to their games while their graduation rates sit at 50%.

Maybe Cam Newton will donate some booster money and get the NWC and SCIAC an extra playoff flight?

Nihon, how painful was it changing the quote under your picture??? I thought it was good to stay for at least another few years. Oxy will be back soon enough.

While just yesterday I said I wouldn't hit Oxy with any more jabs... your rant reminded me of something funny I heard from a buddy this weekend...

Ha ha ha---if Redlands played teams like Linfield in the first place they might have made the playoffs by having a better SOS--to say they were robbed is laughable since it is clear that it's their SOS that took them out of the running.  If you want to see a team that got robbed....as Coach Maynard about Whitworth 2007....

SOS is low because of several teams in the SCIAC. They won the games they played. They lost to Cal Lu by 2 points. SOS is really over blow stat since many teams have really no choice in who they play and their SOS. Why should the be penalized for this with only 1 2 point loss.

SCIAC TEAM RECORDS BELOW .500
Occidental 4-5

While I agree that the SOS is overblown and that teams can't control the fact that they may have to play a lot of weak teams in conference.....to say they were robbed is just a joke.  They had a shot to make the play-offs, their kicker missed the FG (or was it blocked?) and they didn't have a strong enough schedule to get a pool C spot---had they had the stronger SOS and gotten left behind then I'd agree with you.    But to humor you---which pool C team should Redlands have replaced?  And I'm assuming this is after PLU who beat the SCIAC champ and also had only one loss (to their own conference champ) is going to be placed into the bracket ahead of Redlands.....

After a time at the bar, Cardenas suggested that the group join some of his athlete friends from CLU and go around the neighborhood stealing items from unlocked cars, but the other three men declined. The group then left the bar, where they were confronted by CLU wide receiver Clinton Panton, who adopted a fighting stance and flicked his lit cigarette at Cardenas, hitting him in the face just below his eye.

Changing my avatar quote was about as painful as losing the conference championship twice at home via missed last second field goals... divided by 10,000  ;D

Reggie Bush:  Takes $290,000 in gifts.  No suspension

Cam Newton: Burglary, larceny, obstruction of justice @ Florida.  Welcomed back to team.  Allegedly demands $100,000+ to play ball.  No suspension.

Dale Widolff:  Films a player doing combine drills the day before camp starts to send to pro teams.  Pays campus' best computer guy to fix his computer.  4 game suspension including 2 extra bye weeks.  NCAA essentially says, "Jeeze guys, that was pretty harsh!"

Makes sense when I found out Oxy AD Jamie Hoffman started her career as Assistant basketball coach in Greece under head AD Draco.
