SCIAC Wannabe schedule.

If Chapman goes 7-0 against the SCIAC, then I think they have made a good case for a Pool B/C bid.

D O.C.

If Chapman dropped Azuza Pacific and picked up LINFIELD - and beat them -  they would never be allowed in the SCIAC.

Opinions...who has the tougher start, Cal Lutheran or Redlands?

Will the Bulldog Bash be filmed for viewing on YouTube?

When is the vote to see if Chapman gets in?
May 2011
Chapman was an NCAA Division II school in the early '80s and moved to Division III in 1994 in an attempt to attract more student-athletes. The university applied to be part of SCIAC in '94, but the conference had just added its eighth team and wasn't looking to expand, Doug Aiken said.

"Ever since '94, we've abided by SCIAC rules and regulations, kind of in anticipation and to show them that we want to be a SCIAC school," he said.

Because the NCAA recently started encouraging conference realignment, many of the independent teams that the Panthers play during the regular season are joining conferences of their own.

"The landscape of independent schools is starting to dwindle, and we're losing opponents," Aiken said.

If Chapman becomes a SCIAC member, it will automatically have eight other in-conference teams to schedule games against, which makes building season schedules easier.

Teams will have an opportunity to compete for conference championships rather than having to wait for regional and national championships. Student-athletes will miss less school traveling to away games because all SCIAC schools – with the exception of Cal Lutheran – are within 50 miles of Chapman, Aiken said.

"Being a part of a conference really gives students something to look forward to," said Scott Chisholm, sports information director at Cal Lutheran and Chapman water polo alumnus. "We are really excited about Chapman's application, and its acceptance would add another solid team to the SCIAC."

Cal Lutheran is the last of eight schools in the SCIAC. University of Redlands, Caltech, Whittier College, Pomona-Pitzer, Occidental College, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and University of La Verne are the other seven.

As of now, the SCIAC receives one automatic bid to postseason play. If Chapman is accepted as the ninth SCIAC school, its membership will decrease the chances the other eight schools have at earning the bid.

The university submitted its application in September and the SCIAC Presidents Council will meet in April to review it.

"Ultimately, conference membership is left up to the discretion of the SCIAC Presidents Council," Lorin Huffman, SCIAC Executive Director, wrote in an e-mail. "The Council considers several criteria for admitting new members, including the university's commitment to NCAA Division III philosophy, particularly as it relates to academic standards, financial aid policies and codes of conduct."

Between now and April, Chapman expects to have multiple visits from SCIAC committee members who will observe the athletic facilities and speak with coaches.

"It's like they are interviewing us for a job just to make sure that we are indeed the right fit," Aiken said.

After the meeting in April, the SCIAC council will reconvene in May to reach a decision. If Chapman's application is approved, there is a one- to two-year grace period in which the university will ease itself into the conference. After three years of membership, Chapman will then be eligible for SCIAC Championships, Huffman wrote.

This... is a simple game. You throw the ball. You hit the ball. You catch the ball.  "There are three types of baseball players: those who make things happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happened."

A 1-2 year grace perios and then a 3 year wait for Chapman to be eligible for a conference title :o  I had no idea it would be like that but what does that do for them?  I assume they would still be able to get a Pool C birth but that is a pretty rough grace period.

Pat Coleman

Agreed, that is pretty painful. I have not heard of that happening elsewhere to a school that is already a full Division III member.

I wonder whether Chapman would be Pool B or Pool C in that interim period.

I am not sure how much it would matter in football (at this point) but sports like basketball and baseball are a different story.  I'll be interested to find out.

If we had bacon, we could have bacon and eggs, if we had eggs. There is a better chance of La Verne beating Linfield than Chapman to go 7-0 in SCIAC play next year.

Watch out for Chapman's junior Left Tackle D.J. Brandel.. kid's been starting since he was a freshman and has been dominating for the past 2 years.  Pretty much had his way with all the d-ends in the conference, especially Barta believe he had his only sack last year against chapman last year against the other tackle.

WCFBFAN,

Do you have a daughter that is a cheerleader at Chapman?

WCFBFAN

No... just stating the fact about a kid who cannot get any conference recognition bc chapman is not in a conference
