"Whittier wide receiver Giovanni Stanley caught just two passes for the Poets this past season after hauling in 16 balls in 2009 but was signed by the San Diego Chargers. The Poets completed fewer than 10 passes per game and Stanley battled hamstring injuries but is 6-3, 200, and had a great pro day, according to his agent."

Great news for Poet fans.
It would be even better if he was still playing for Whittier. ;)

Great news for the SCIAC. Congrats Stanley.

Fox, I doubt he would be a factor if still playing for the Poets. I don't think they were giving him the ball much anyway. So it is very highly doubtful that he would have been a key contributor. But wow 2catches and the Chargers scoop him up. Impressive!!!! 8-) 8-) 8-)

Then how (I wonder) would he be a factor for the CHARGERS of the NFL????

I am beyond confused on this one.

He obviously made it to the Chargers because he is talented my fellow blogger..BUT was not a factor on the Poets due to the style of play (offensive scheme). This year with a new staff who knows. My apologies Kingsmen4 because i did forget about the staff change @ Whittier. SO I guess I am saying if the staff was returning to Whittier I doubt that he would have been a factor as a result of the style of offense they ran.

I wasn't looking that deep into it... I was and still am in bitter shock... How a guy (I don't care what style of offense he was in btw, there are receivers that play on wing T offenses that snag 30-40 receptions a year) that only has 2 catches on a season, and 17 the previous year (that's 19 on the career, what Maki from Pomona used to haul in before halftime) gets any sort of looks from not an arena2, IFL, Arena, UFL ... BUT AN NFL TEAM??

I don't care how good of a workout you have in front of decision makers... the fact that anyone (much less a D-3 player, much less a D-3 player from one of the least competitive teams in the nation) would take a guy that had 2 catches the prior season is out of their minds.

I wish him all of the luck in the world, and that is cool that Whittier has something like this that they can hang their hat on and use for recruiting (that was not sarcastic) but that still does not cure my immense confusion that he got asked to come to an NFL camp.

I would be ranting even if Whittier's top receiver, who likely had 40-50 catches got a look from the pros. I ALSO would be ranting if a D-1 player from LSU or OSU or USC that had 2 catches on a season got a look in the NFL. That just doesn't happen, and it has nothing to do with the style of offense he played in. Whittier passed the ball (or tried to) plenty.

Andy Collins I get it, Justin Goltz I get it. Pierre Garcon, I get it.... Giovanni Stanley???

Doesn't make sense. Until someone tells me that his uncle is a scout, or his brother in law is the receivers coach, I don't and won't get it.

Todd Lowber got looks and his Division III school didn't even have football. It doesn't cost an NFL team a whole lot to give a workout wonder a shot.

That makes more sense to me ... A guy with all upside who has never played the sport, vs. a guy that has played for years and has no stats or film to show of it...

Who's to say Giovanni Stanley doesn't have upside?

I subscribe to the thought that scouts know more than I do. While I would disagree on some people they pass on, I would never look down on a chance they give someone from Division III.

I agree, they know something that I don't. I choose not to look down on the opportunity he has, I already said it is a positive thing and I wish him the best... But again that does not mean I am not thoroughly confused.

Hopefully he makes the squad and everyone here can send jabs at me for venting. Also hoping he does not flop and it turn into a "this guy from the SCIAC had no place being here".

On to a new topic ... CLU vs. Linfield... any predictions yet?? I was talking to W11 and we both at least semi agreed that this will be the most even matchup we will see from the past 2 years games between these squads. If it weren't in McMinville, I would even go as far as to say that CLU could be the favorite.

Thoughts?

k-4, i will be the first to start.while linfield is the class of the west coast i have to go with clu. they have alot of returners and laudenslayer just got better as last season  went on.it looks like linfield lost alot from last year and you never know how those first couple of games will turn out, but then again they are the cats. no score prediction but it should be a good one.i will be suprised if we have to come back like last year.

Quick question- all of the schedules I have seen still show Chapman as a non-conference game but I thought their SCIAC membership starts this coming fall?  Are they in any type of provisional year (I know they are not able to win the SCIAC for the first year) that will keep them considered non-conference?

dahlby

Jack,
Good question. Chapman became a member of the SCIAC this summer. BUT, is ineligible for the
championships. No notification to Chapman (as of last Thursday) when they will qualify had been made as of yet. Most teams are now starting to schedule Chapman   and hopefully by the 2012/13 school year everything will be all set. If Chapman  isn't playing a certain team in a sport, or only playing a team once, and other teams twice, I don't see how it would be fair to count those contests toward the standings, so in essence, this first (or second year) would be provisional, if this answers your question.
