Yeah, it makes sense but I really wasn't sure.  It looks like CU scheduled the entire SCIAC for Football but maybe not for other sports.  With the swchedules being made in advance and CU accepting membership during the summer it would have likely made scheduling a disaster with all the changes and what not.  I would figure they would be elligible for titles starting Fall of 2012.

Kingsmen4,

I agree with everything you said. It is puzzling for ANY person to make it to the NFL with those statistics. But I do wish Giovanni all the best. It is a great story especially for someone from the SCIAC to get such an opportunity.

but lets change topics, who is going to challenge Cal Lu for the SCIAC crown?? Will my Leopards get out of the sciac dungeon an compete this year? What is Redlands going to do without Selway!! So much intrigue its almost like NFL free agency!

There is no place to post this, so I will post it here.

Olin Browne, 52, an Oxy grad, just won the US Senior Open for golf.  It is considered a major, according to the TV announcers.  He didn't take golf seriously until after his freshman year.  By my calculations, he has been playing for less time than Tiger. 8-)

Olin was giving a talk to D111 golfers recently at a tournament in Florida where he related to them he struggled his Soph year at Oxy to even break 80.  By his senior year he was in contention for the D111 national title where on the back nine by his own count he hit 8 shanks to take himself out of the title.  His win yesterday was not only a Senior Major win but I believe it was also his first win on the Senior Championship tour.  Guy doesn't give up !

With the talk starting about CLU-Linfield and the question asked about LaVerne and who will challenge CLU, I thought now would be a good time to post this. I've been running a pick 'em for the NWC for several years and I thought maybe the SCIAC folks would like to do a little picking of games.

Prior to the first games of the season on September 3, predict the SCIAC final standings. These points will be added to the weekly pick points at the end of the regular season to determine the winner. 7 points will be awarded for picking the correct league champ, 6 for second and so on to last place.

One point will be awarded for each correct non league game picked correctly and 2 points for each correct SCIAC game picked correctly. In addition there will be a West Region game of the week not involving SCIAC teams worth two points as well as a National Game. The picks must be made by 7 A.M. Pacific time on Saturday morning.

I will try to have the updated standings and following weeks games up by Sunday evening. You have between now and 7 A.M. on September 3 to get your final standing predictions in.

I think CLU will have their best year to date (in the NCAA ERA), and go undefeated in the regular season, hosting the first round playoff. With Redlands losing the old man (QB) and some key defenders, Oxy trying to bounce back from a down year, and Linfield also replacing star QB and big-time defenders - this is CLU's opportunity to have a dominating year. Closest games will come against Linfield, CMS OR Chapman (trying to catch CLU in a late season lull), and Oxy. The Redlands game will not come down to a field goal again this year, though they will be the strongest team behind Linfield that CLU will play. The Oxy/CLU season finale will be one of the best games in the SCIAC this season.

I see Redlands as the second best team in the SCIAC when it all shakes out (they will go back to a pound the ball approach without Selway, running some 3 back formations from a few years back), but am hoping Oxy makes the jump back in the mix after a very uncharacteristic season last year ... and goes back to beating UR year after year (just because that makes me happy). Claremont will remain in the mix for the 3rd spot and play strong D, but will not be a factor down the stretch. Chapman will surprise a few teams but overall will play with great inconsistency and will end up around 5-4. Whittier will go winless, with Pomona and La Verne fighting for the 5 spot.

All the pressure is on CLU. we have choked year after year with both close losses and slip up games against inferior opponents, most importantly we have not risen to the occasion when playing the top teams (Linfield most recently, along with Redlands, Oxy, and Willamette in previous years). It will all come down to getting over the HYPE and just playing consistent football.

There will be an improved feel of confidence to Cal Lu this year. The leaders of the team have been to the playoffs twice and beaten nationally ranked opponents so they should expect to win every game, and groom the young guys to those same expectations. The stadium should bring some life to the program's following and create a buzz in the community, who CLU has lacked support from (in terms of game attendance) for a long time. The alumni following is stronger than ever, and that always helps a program through a season.

Overall, thankful it is football season again.

D O.C.

Could be the new stadium confuses everybody the first year it is open. No tradition, sterile, over done compared to what was.

CLU should be favored to win against LINFIELD on the road in a stadium they've had their hopes crushed twice. (Odd how that nationally ranked team and two play-off appearances was the same opponent?!)

I, for one, am looking forward to Chapman finally getting their chance at a 4 year home and home set-up with LINFIELD. The baseball rivalry is already there.

I would like to thank La Verne one last time for stepping up. Have fun in the McMinnville Valley (I just could not say it).

D O.C.,

Sometimes a new stadium brings out the pride as a motivational facor. I would assume that
CAL LU will draw a larger crowd, which also could be a factor. I guess time will tell.

Regarding Chapman scheduling Linfield , that would make me happy, and although the two schools already play each other in several other sports, I don't see Chapman scheduling the Wildcats for a few years, if at all, as Whitworth has been added on a home and home basis and I believe, after this year Pudget Sound will be added in place of APU on at least a home and home basis.

Where is Cal Lu going to play this year?  Just checked out the stadium cam and unless they are playing on dirt they might need to find a place for home games.

Luckily, the grass just needs to be installed, not planted/rooted/seeded. First week's game is away, themn home Vs. PLU which could be played at Moorpark. Keeping my finger's crossed for Redlands week 3. I would love to open play in the new stadium against Redlands.

I was just sent an e-mail from a former Cal Lu teammate, who's brother played center at Oxy with Andy Collins. It stated that Andy has died of a heart attack at age 27, just 10 days after getting married.

My thoughts go out to the Collins family, and to the Oxy family. Andy was an incredible football player - I never met him but had a lot of respect for the way he led his team. With that said, I was sent that message in order to pass along word, give others the opportunity to remember him in this time, and send their condolences to those close to him.

Not that this is any hard confirmation but a lot of his facebook friends have changed their profile picture to a photo of his #1 Oxy Jersey....

This would be a big story somewhere, and I can't find any.  When did this all happen?
I'm sure Pat or Keith are checking.
