Actually [sniff], if one believes the group's own press release, it's the "Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup."  Still, a donation has been made in your name to the Plural Possessives Fund of the National Association of Self-Righteous Grammarians.

As for why you might care, perhaps it's worth recalling Oxy's own athletic mission statement: "Occidental's athletic program aims to compare favorably with those at the best small liberal arts colleges in the nation."  Interestingly, it might be said that NACDA's effort--now in its 17th year--to track overall athletic performance in DIII provides a useful quantitative measure to assess how well Occidental lives up to its mission.  Now, assuming that "favorably" means "as good as or better than"--which is what it means in Claremont, though I suppose it's anybody's guess what it means in Eagle Rock--I think it's fair to say that there's some progress to be made.  Right now, in fact, you're looking up at the following:  Middlebury, Wash U, Amherst, Williams, Emory, Tufts, Hopkins, MIT, CMS, Bowdoin, U of C, St. Olaf, DePauw, Bates, Trinity, Centre, Kenyon, Haverford, Colby, Washington & Lee, Carleton, Pomona-Pitzer, and Wesleyan.  (On the bright side, you kicked tail on Oberlin, Grinnell, and Macalester--but, as long as you've got some good weed for them, they won't give a rat's a**.) On the other hand, at least there's a medal for participation, which I'm sure will display handsomely in Oxy's case, right next to the Shoes, the Drum, and the Jack Kemp football.

Didn't realize you were such a delicate flower, Bob, or that discussion here is all football all the time.  Both points duly noted for future reference.  Have a smiley day.

Just curious: How many points did the CMS football team contribute to CMS's 14th place finish in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup? Oh, yeah, that's right -- zero.

I didn't even know CMS had a football team.

How could we incorporate Whittier into this argument? That would really get things interesting.\

That's quite a coincidence, Wildcat, since I didn't realize that Linfield had a college to go with its football team.  (Actually, to be fair, I did once hear Linfield referred to as "The Central College of the West"--which is certainly select company.)

D O.C.

CMS and LINFIELD actually have some commonality...the Day family. Robert gave the biz school at the Mudd a hefty gift and TJ gave LINFIELD a good start on expanding the campus.
Long live the Keck Foundation.

Final 2011-12 standings in the Learfield Sports DIII Directors Cup out yesterday.  Order of finish by SCIAC teams (out of 317 ranked DIII schools):
14. CMS

First of all, if you're going to tout something, at least get the name right: Learfield Sports Directors' Cup.

What can I say, DoubleDomer? Whoa! Wow! CMS finished 14th in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup?! That's amazing! Here on the SCIAC football board we wait with great anticipation for the results of the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup. And CMS finished 14th? In the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup? Un-be-lie-va-ble! The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup. Rolls right of the tongue, doesn't it? And CMS finished 14th. Fourteenth! Of course, the way that CMS pads its test scores, CMS probably figures that it won the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup.

Just curious: How many points did the CMS football team contribute to CMS's 14th place finish in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup? Oh, yeah, that's right -- zero.

In what trophy case is CMS going to display its framed certificate for finishing 14th in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup? Please find out because I certainly want to stop by and take a picture of it next time I'm in Claremont.

What's that?  Do we both get to play on CLU's new soccer field and free tickets to your art museum?

Sure, you and the squad can check out the museum after the game. Keep the camera on, you can make an abstract video and call it the art of defeat.

Cool.  As long as this video is being displayed I'm looking forward to checking it out.

I think it's called "A trip to the Inevitable Conclusion"

Kingsmen4

You would have a great point... But you forget that last time we played at CLU we won... And the inevitable conclusion (that being playoffs in the catdome) was due to us not having a suitable stadium to host that year.

So if you come down and catch a L ... The "inevitable conclusion" of the Catedome is no more...

"Smack" talk (writings) and it is only June? Man, can't wait for the real stuff when the season starts.

How usual or unusual is it for a DIII school to put on a "Pro Day" for NFL/other professional football scouts?
