Fear the Poet

whittiers d looks pretty bad, the o has some good skill players but they always seem to disappear against good defenses

believe me dad, Ive seen what you are referring to in my sons first go around, but this offense is much deeper than anything Ive seen at whittier. Schulock was a one man show a few years back..these guys are at least three strong recievers deep and RBs and QB are more than solid. Time will tell I guess, but we are optomistic with how things went in camp and the fire the guys have shown to date.

I think the Poets are moving in a positive direction for sure....

i hope so, any time a sciac team can get better and  compete i am happy ;D, i really am interested in chapman this year. the league could be a blast if we could have 4 teams each year that could make a run at the championship.

watched the internet feed, and also going on past seasons. i really sound like i have a grudge against whittier and i dont. if im totally wrong and whittier runs the table ,good for them as long as they lose to clu( and they will do that) ;D

I will be the first to admit that CLU has it going and UR has always been solid.  From the time that I was a player until now, there has been a tremendous amount of turnover in coaches and in the SCIAC the teams that consistently compete are those that have solid staffs.  Even under the tenure of Hammer, new position coaches every year, 4 different OC's, 3 different DC's... just not a winning combo.  If Whittier can keep some coaches around for more than a year or two I think we will begin to see them compete for the Top 3.  Anyways... hope all have a great week and good luck to the SCIAC this week.

By the way love all the poet haters... keep it rollin'!!

WCALUM you are so right on the coaching ,but why is there such a big turnover with the poets

WCAlum,

You are correct, but that applies nation wide.  Mt. Union rarely changes.

I have to say this run by CLU has been great and I don't think they are anywhere near reaching their potential.  If they can keep Coach McEnroe around for another 5 years I think they'll be untouchable in the SCIAC.  His ability to bring in talent and his game plans have been great, but I think the biggest improvement is simply the facilities.  CLU has been able to take it to the next level with all of their sports facilities and that's exciting for young kids to see when they come on campus.  It isn't just about football, it's about all the facilities which gives you the impression that it's special to be an athlete at that school.  Whether you are there for water polo, baseball, football, whatever, there is an excitement about the athletic program that just didn't exist when I was there 20 years ago.  Having the right coach to be able to capitalize on that is key.

I have to say the basketball program has been very disappointing in it's average performance over recent years.  Despite having new facilities which you'd think would have had a major impact on recruiting, they have languised around .500 and it just makes you think that it may be time for Rider to move on.  If you are going to make that kind of investment in your school financially, average is not going to get the job done.

CLU has a great team. It has a nice new field. It also has 107 players on its roster. By contrast, Pomona has 53, and I'd venture a guess that not one of the 107 CLU players could get into Pomona.

You're way off on Rich Rider. He's won 432 career games, and he's 287-165 (.635) at CLU.

I'll move my response to the hoops thread so we don't get sidetracked here.

You really have to play that card? This isn't Quiz Bowl.
