Thanks  MonroviaCat and Pat Coleman (as ultra-busy as you must be) for those soundly reasoned and helpful observations.

It's to be hoped that UR's coaches are able to keep the  Bulldogs in good spirits before SCIAC games commence.

All the best for your alma maters this season!

Olddog,

Your thorough analysis of UMHB game is most illuminating (I could only get online UR radio commentary guys , whose viewpoints are in synch with yours.)

What's your thinking of how well Sampson looked?  Do you think it would be wise to give one or two of our other QB's a shot at PLU?

Hemingway,

I would give Samson a 6.5 on how well he played. He made some very good zone reads, even though some did not make many yards it was the right move to keep the ball and he had a couple nifty 8 and 12 yard scrambles to first downs. He did not have enough time to go deep or check down to the third and fourth guy. He was under duress all night for the most part. The reason the 99 yard pass worked was it was off play action MHB was looking for dive. It was a very pretty throw, Irwin never broke stride. One of his picks and maybe two were the receiver breaking off the route incorrectly since you could see the receiver coach talking to his WR and not Samson.

I would be surprised if UR coaches had a quick hook on him, against PLU. Heck, his first college start against the #3 team and pre-season AA linemen. I expect PLU to be good, but believe me,  MHB played at a whole different level than say NCC,CLU or PLU did last year. Their D line was the difference in the game to me.

I stand by my statement, this team has a chance to be better than last year and I just wish they were playing CLU later in the season. A lot of sophs on the field for UR, so we will be a lot better at the end of they year.

Olddog,

Your resolute optimism about Sampson is most encouraging. All the same, it'd be interesting to see how Bridgford and/or Russell would stack up against a quality "D" like PLU's, especially Russell because he's the only junior among our QB candidates. Also, if Sampson is definitely going to start at Oxy, wouldn't it be judicious to obviate the risk of him getting injured?

Hopefully, the StretchNet video broadcast will be functioning at PLU so that I can gain a much better perspective. At this stage I'm still reckoning that Bulldogs will finish #3 or #4 place in the SCIAC.
Cheers!

Hemingway,

I do not know how good the other teams are this year, but I can tell you MHB was much better than NCC and we got worked by NCC. We were out of the game by the middle of the second quarter. The MHB game was different, we were still in it in the second half.

I think Samson needs all the work one can get, I am a believer in getting your guy ready if you think you think he won the job.

I posted this on the hoops board but since most folks aren't paying attention to SCIAC hoops now (or 4 months from now sadly), thought I'd throw it out here too.

Mike Dunlap is doing a Chalk Talk on Thursday night - open to the public and free but you have to RSVP to save a seat.

Olddog,

As usual, your reasoning here is sound. My concern is not to rush to judgment  without evaluating Russell and Bridgeford under real game pressure. I did hear Coach Goode justifying a couple of Sampson's interceptions, but the radio guys said there was another which a UMHB defender dropped. Also, they said that UMHB started filtering in their backup players toward the end of the first half. Of course, your seeing the game in person and my not having online video means you are in a far better position to assess the wisest QB option for us to take, so many thanks for these discussions.

For what it's with, The Cru sub in their second string guys a lot during the season. That is a common practice, especially on the D line.
Watch out for the wreckingCRU defense!!

Hemingway,

Most colleges that have depth and MHB does, start their rotations on the second quarter. The guys MHB got into the game were very good and their was not a material drop off. They even rotated their two AA d linemen, an their stud RB. UR started rotating heavy in the third quarter as well. It is part of the modern college game. There were a lot of plays ran that night and it was warm and more humid than normal. I expect UR during the season to use 6 - WRs, 3 RBs, 7- O line, 6 D linemen, 5 backers, and 7 DBs....plus special teams...

Regarding the QB situation, we do not play 10 games like most D3 teams and unlike the 11 in D2. So I think the coaches feel they have had all spring and 25 practices this fall to make the eval. Since the pre-season is only two games they have to get their horse ready. If we had four games in the pre-season I would agree with you, but when you only have two and your big game is game 4 (CLU), you have to get your horse ready. If he shows improvement in the first half of PLU, there is no way I would pull him. Our goal is to get better by game 4. Trust me he had little time to make his throws, he moves better than Bridgeford and just as well as the PLU kid. The issue with UR is not the QB, even the MHB color commentator who is an ex coach and did a great job said Samson was making nice plays under duress. The issue on offense is the o line getting off the ball better on running plays and not getting drove back on pass blocking.
The rest of the issues can be cleaned up on D. Once the backers do a better job of making their reads and getting tucked in better for cut back the defense will improve over night...

Who could argue with your impeccable logic about the QB decision and, of course, I will be keeping fingers crossed that you're not only right about this but also about UR regaining the SCIAC title this season.

By the way, winning the Conference is the most important quest by country mile, in my book. A lot of D3 fans seem more focused on getting into later D3 playoff rounds, but I consider there's no way of gauging what's the potential impact, if any, of having a Junior Varsity conference, a 10 game regular season schedule etc.. Again, I greatly appreciate your sharing invaluable first-hand knowledge, which hasn't been available in previous seasons.

Cheers!

Update re Oxy football. All you need to know about the 2013 Oxy football team cannot be found on the football home page.

Maybe they'll get around to writing about this year's team sometime before the game on Sept. 14 against Pacific, which scorched the Tigers 27-6 last year.

Oxy finally did get around to posting a team preview.

New Coach, High-Powered Offense Leads Oxy Football
http://www.oxyathletics.com/sports/fball/2013-14/releases/20130911djvujx

Some of the highlights:

Quote"Last year we were really good at moving the ball, we just lacked the discipline to finish drives and get in the end zone," said [OL Dalton] Spinas.

Reminds me of former Dodgers manager Jim Tracy: "We didn't fail. We just didn't succeed as much as we'd have liked."

QuoteThe Tigers had the most prolific passing offense...

Most prolific, except for Whittier, which was more prolific.

QuoteFirst-year head coach Doug Semones' contagious enthusiasm is the catalyst.

"The morale of the team is higher than I've ever seen at Occidental," Spinas said. "Coach Semones is a real high-energy guy, which we haven't really had in the past. He's really a players coach so all the younger guys are buying into that."

The new coach is very enthusiastic.

Eat 'em up, Tigers!
