Eyewitness report from Eagle Rock:

Redlands 38 Oxy 21

A credible effort by Oxy to hang in there but Redlands pulled away and won it.

UR returned the opening kickoff 55 yards and then scored on 5 plays. Two minutes in and it was 7-0. Oxy came back and drove to the UR 10 (including a 24-yard run by OL Dalton Spinas on a fake punt) but went for it on 4th-and-1 and failed. Redlands drove down the field again to the Oxy 10. Kevin Russell's pass was intercepted by Shay Mueller and returned 92 yards for a TD and it was 7-7.

In the second quarter, Redlands started a drive from the 15. Bobby Brown's 53-yard run got the Bulldogs to the Oxy 30, and UR punched it in from there and led 14-7. Oxy then drove inside the UR 40 but had to punt.  Curtis Tanquary ran 30 yards to the 50, and the Bulldogs moved it from there, scored, and it was 21-7 with 2 minutes to go in the half. Oxy nicely drove downfield (helped along by a roughing the passer call). Tommy Edwards hit Devin Bullock with a TD pass with 20 seconds left, and the Tigers trailed only 21-14 at the half.

Oxy got the ball to start the second half. Edwards led the Tigers on a 5-1/2 minute, 15-play scoring drive. On 4th-and-goal from the 6, Edwards hit Cordell Harris for the TD. It's tied 21-21! Unfortunately, Edwards was hurt on the play and did not return. Redlands then got two quick TDs, the second on Brown's 64-yard run. The Bulldogs later added a FG, and it ended 38-21.

Tommy Edwards was 25-for-34 for 225 yards and 2 TDs before he was hurt. Devin Bullock caught 7 passes for 115 yards and a TD.

UR had 606 yards in total offense. Redlands ran wild for 424 yards, most in school history. Bobby Brown had 175 yards on 10 carries and 2 TDs, and Curtis Tanquary rushed for 133 yards on 14 carries and a TD.

Oxy (1-2) is @ Claremont (1-2) next week. In their SCIAC opener, the Stags were soundly beaten 30-6 by La Verne.

Thanks for sharing. Tons of respect for PP student athletes. They are what D3 sports are/should be all about.  Too bad  they don't have greater numbers on their roster.

UR/Oxy

Well the game pretty much went as I thought (establish the run game)  except UR could not bury Oxy due to their own mistakes. UR came out and established the run on the worse run defense in the conference. UR passing game struggled in my opinion, sure we had a high completion ratio but that we due to the OC calls. I really think Samson should be the QB. Oxy is clearly not remotely in the class of Mary Hardin, yet I do not think the transfer out of PLU played any better than Samson. If I was Bridgford and Samson I would be frustrated, give the O line's performance the first two games. The QB had time and could not make the tough throw. In addition to the pick 6, we should have had two more picked. I am really concerned about the Cal Lu game. It will be much tougher to run the ball and with out a threat down the middle it could be a long night. The score was 21-14 at the Half and could have been 35-0, an ill advised throw by the qb and prayer that was answered by Oxy, but that is football. I will say Oxy's qb made it a nice effort until being knocked out the game. He is very competitive and was fun to watch.

Oxy caught a big break in the line judge and white hat decided to even the game up by not calling holding every play on the Oxy o line. Many plays Oxy linemen were either tackling or just grabbing and holding onto UR d line. UR front seven played really well, although for the life of me I can not understand why in two deep our safeties do not jump the post when the QB locks on, and when in cover one our CB do not take it away first. Oxy threw one out all night..Linebackers  Butler and Lord did not play, I think Lord is done for the year. Butler is a good ball player and I hope he is back this week. Our converted FB to MLB Tutles played really well, getting better every week...kid is nasty inside and fun to watch. The boy can hit, he laid out Oxy stud tackle, due to previous cheap shots earlier in the game, clean hit...nothing dirty. Oxy has improved since last year, but still in the lower half of the league.

On a side not, one should note Bobby Brown's game, he looked really good in the open field running the ball, best at reading the defense and if we have remote chance against CLU, it will be with his legs.

Cal Lu Fans, are the temp bleachers done on the visitors side? and where is a good place to get something to eat near the campus...

Thanks

I believe they are done.

Plenty of good food around but I would say PJ's Pub.  Good bar food and a nice place to grab a burger and a cold one before the game.

It's real interesting to be able to read reports from such experienced commentators about last weekend's Oxy/UR game by alums of opposing teams, so a tip of the hat to Oxy Bob and Olddog.

A conundrum on this week's SCIAC Pick'em Board for both these teams is the uncertainty of who their QB's will be.

Any word yet on the recovery from injury by Tommy Edwards? Which of the three Bulldogs QB's plays on the road against the Kingsmen doesn't seem likely to make a lot of difference. Unfortunately!

Hemi,

Anytime regarding the game notes. I think we will see the PLU transfer at QB. I have deemed this game the "Run Bowl" whoever can establish the run will win.
Watch out for CLU trick plays, they seem to get us every year. I believe we are huge underdogs due to our offense just could not move the ball against PLU and they could. I think our D played PLU a little tougher than CLU, CLU's qb (Dean) is an average runner, so they will run more power football than read like UR. I am sure they will run play action and throw the post. I pray coach Mariani just flat lines up inside shade and takes the post away, forces him to go up top or out. If UR has any chance the D line will need to come up big against the bigger but slower Kingsmen, (those guys can be dirty) . If we can rush four it will really help, in coverage. PLU's cover two was pretty effective against Dean and Linfield's d line gave CLU fits. If we can replicate Linfield d line to any degree they will keep up in the game.

I think CLU will load the box and blitz this kid in third and long. UR has to manage the field and attempt to make third downs manageable, if not UR will struggle. We can not get down by two scores.
We need to get the ball to Irwin more, bubbles, reverses, etc..he is a playmaker and finds a way to make the play into a positive. Lastly CLU likes aggressive safeties in two high and they will be playing the run, time to pop a couple passes to our big TE, he is a load when in RAC situations.

I love games like this, because it comes down to the boys up front, maybe not the best game from a fans point of view, but it will be real physical inside all night long, lets see who wins the fight up front.

Cheers, Mate

Both teams will come to play.

The ball will take odd bounces.
