The Oxy coaches, at least on the offensive side, have a definite Hawaii connection.

Doug Semones, Oxy's head football coach
"He won four OIA Championships and went 68-14-2 in seven seasons as the head coach (1989-95) at Kahuku HS in Hawaii and later had a three-year stint as the special teams coordinator and defensive line coach at the University of Hawaii from 1996-98.  Shortly after his tenure with Hawaii, he was the defensive and special teams coordinator for the Hawaiian Islanders of the Arena Football League."

Darnell Arceneaux, QB coach
"Arceneaux played his collegiate ball at University of Utah from 1996-2000, where he was 11-2 as the team's starting QB, a team captain in 1999 and 2000 and voted 4x Most Inspirational Offensive Player. In 1999, he led Utah to a victory in the Las Vegas Bowl over Fresno State. He graduated Utah with a B.S. in Sociology.

"A Hawaii native, Arceneaux enjoyed a decorated high school career. In 1995, he was the Hawaii Athlete of the Year (Honolulu Quarterback Club), Hawaii Offensive Player of the Year, was the nation's 14th ranked quarterback, and was first-team all-state quarterback (an honor he also received in '94). He was also all-state basketball player in 1995-96 and led St. Louis to three state prep bowl championships and two IHL basketball championships."

Brian Smith, Offensive Coordinator
"Smith played center at Hawaii from 1998-2001 and won a Western Athletic Conference championship in 1999. After graduating he was an assistant at Oregon St. and the offensive line coach at Portland St. before returning to coach his alma mater as the offensive line coach for a year and the running backs for three years (2008-11). Last year he was the offensive line coach at Cal Lutheran, helping the Kingsmen to a SCIAC championship and the second-best scoring offense in NCAA Division III. Three of Smith's offensive lineman were named All-SCIAC and one earned All-Region honors."

Kahuku (public school) and St. Louis (private school) are traditional Hawaii high school football powers, although not known for sending players to schools like Oxy.   Can't help but be impressed by the experience these three coaches have on the professional, D-I, D-III, and high school levels.  Depending on the help the Oxy administration is willing to give them and the other Oxy coaches, I can see better days for offensive football at Oxy.

Made the trip out to CMS yesterday:

The Good: Redlands defense continued to play well, DBs seem to be breaking to the ball better, hence a couple picks. CMS did not try to run inside and tried to get outside most of the time, with Locke and Woods playing solid games. What the d line does so well is against run, they do not get knocked off the ball, making backs unable  get a straight run at where they are suppose to go.  UR's kicking game was better, punts were better and kick offs deep into the end zone. Coverage was much better too. Until last week UR defense had played MHB the toughest all season despite a lackluster O, remember this is the defense that had UR only down 14-0 against PLU in the fourth despite the offense had not crossed the 50 for three quarters.

The Bad: CMS wide out just drop too many balls, in fact one dropped a td late in the game. UR o line did not block that well against an undersized defense. UR's o line was very inconsistent, many times a couple linemen had a hard time holding their block long enough for the back to get by against undersized team. PAT got bull rushed, once from the left side.

Notable, if was nice to see many players getting off the bench in the second half. Some pretty decent prospects. The defense looks to be pretty tough up front the next couple years. UR has some freshman o linemen that look to be pretty good in a year or two. Lastly it was nice to see Samson drive the team for a score.

Almost forgot my high coveted review of the SCIAC officials. Well this crew average at best. When Sean Woods was constantly having to have a teammate put his shoulder pads back in his jersey, any chance he is being held? nope, and in regards to safety, only saw two heads get snapped back on face mask but no call. Pretty brutal Maynard could not get those calls in front of his sidelines. They did make the right call on PI against UR, despite what UR fans thought. The refs did notice the scoreboard  and called the game accordingly. Lastly a new complaint, CMS is one of the finest schools in the league, but the kid they had doing the game clock had not clue, when the ref raises his hand and blows the whistle, play over stop the clock. The White Hat had to ask the kid 15 times to reset the game clock please. I hate to see that kids grades. Even in the second half it kept happening, any chance the AD fixes the issue, nope.

UR wraps up it last two games at home. The most impressive thing about UR being in first place, four out of their five wins were on the road. The three biggest games were on the road, Oxy, CLU, and Chapman. This story along with the defense giving up about 10 points a game are the two story lines this season.

Olddog,
Your report of the UR/CMS game was most interesting. I'm real pleased also to see signs of potential from the backups, particularly Devin Appleton, the Freshman RB from Pioneer High who's joined up with Pioneer's Curtis Tanquary.  :)

What happened to the poll for where they are playing?

I will be at the Redlands game, UR should win, I hope to see some more of the younger players. I like to follow a players' development.
D line will be brand new next year and need a replacement for Irwin at WR, along with some Db's to develop. The rest areas should be better next year especially if LB Griffin Lord who was All SCIAC as a jr, decides to play his 5th year. Lord dislocated his elbow in two a days. The defense would have been even better since he was the best backer in camp.

On a side note WR/DB Hussey from PP did not play last week. I hope he does play so I can see him go both ways. I love that stuff.

PP, starts two freshman o linemen, so hopefully the 2 -QB's will be healthy for their rivalry game, next week.

The Chapman QB article bring forward, UR recruits North CA pretty heavy since their are not any D3 schools  in NorCal and the only small college 4 year options are Menlo (NAIA and limited degree options) and Humbolt (D2).
