Recap of the SCIAC this season.

1) Redlands. Defense was not a surprise but offense was a surprise in how mediocre they are. The UR offense maybe the 5th best in the conference only in front of PP and CMS. However if you tell me the defense was only going to average giving up one td a game in conference I would have said UR wins going away. Tough to explain why we can get upgrade our O line. Even Whittier's O line with two freshman starting was better in my opinion. But,  with that said playing a tough preseason really helped UR improve and highlight weakness. The series that stands out in my mind this season as being the season maker was UR goaline stance against the Regals in the fourth quarter. The Regal's line for of 300 pounders as Mac has bragged could not root out UR and in fact blew up the Regals for two plays down on the 1 foot line, they beat the beefy Regals off the ball to win the game. One play does not make a game or a season but that the high water mark. UR knew the conference was theirs to take.  UR had an advantage being able to play a lot of 3 man front all season and letting the backers and SS run around and make tackles unblocked. UR's interior defense was the best in the conference and the DB's improved as the season went on.

2) Chapman. I think if they ever want to take this conference they need to be more serious. Chapman's recruiting is not as aggressive as the Regals or the Dogs. Chapman relies on being Chapman to get kids. It is a tough school to get in despite being a mini USC in the OC. They have some nice skills coming back, they two really need to upgrade at the D line and O line spots to take it next year.

3) Oxy, hats off to the third place team, despite loosing their QB in the second half to the Dogs. I was very impressed with the new staff. The OC seems to have things moving in the right direction and some tools, nice balanced attack. It looks like Do and Scott will be tough next year. If they can get some decent kids in the front 7, they will be very dangerous next year. I think the Regals suffered in loosing their O line coach to Oxy.

4) The Regals, so far coach Mac's blog is quiet, how much do you say when your fourth place. I will re-cap his blogging on a separate post to do it justice. I still can not believe what his post or the jabs. The Regals have some work. They loose many o linemen. They were a little young, but I am not convinced Rico is their QB of the future. I am sure the Regals plan will be three prong, take any and all D1 bounce backs, go to the JC's for linemen and DB's where they need help, and recruit selling kids they can start as frosh.
All I can say Mac,  you can not win them all and put some whip cream on that humble pie this TG....look forward to more recipes. I am sure he will recruit his rear off, but the young staff hurt him a bit this season. I have no doubt they will be back, they have too many positives going for them...facility, admission, aid etc...

5) ULV, program seems lost. They can get some good players due to admission, cost and aid because I know many that were interested in UR and could not get in. Once again the emphasis should be on defense. They seem to really suffer down the middle and at the corners. I thought they had turned a corner but went backwards this year. Rumor is after the UR game the kids phoned it in.

6) CMS, I love everything about this school and the athletes. They seem to be getting some better linemen. However their skills were down from the past. They will always struggle to stay out of the bottom but I respect their approach and effort every time UR plays them.

7) Whittier, not sure what they are doing. The program support does not seam there and I know it was one of Jellerson's issues and what got him in trouble. Obviously given their 4-5 season last year he brought some good players in. He was recruiting the Southeast LA County area along with North OC fairly hard. I suggest they go back to it and given their admissions there is no reason they can not get some players in.

8) Pomona. I guess having a football team is more of a club sport at PP. This is ok and nothing wrong with it, but I have concerns for the players, they start out with 50 in camp at best and many years down to 35 by season end. Just a tough formula but I respect them staying true to what they are.

Welcome back, boys. Looking forward to seeing you again. Safe travels and enjoy your time in Belton.

As far as the "one and done" talk goes, I hate to hear that, no matter who is playing. Anything can happen. We'll see how it goes.
Watch out for the wreckingCRU defense!!

To everyone making the trip from Cali, enjoy your time in Central Texas. Schoepf's BBQ in Belton is pretty good eatin', but don't fill up on it. The CRUthedral has some special food items that are only available at the stadium.

I recommend trying a Cru-dog. It is a hotdog shaped hamburger (best way to describe it) served on a Hawaiian bun topped by cheese. Good stuff. You might want to try the Slovacek Sausage as well. Blue Bell Ice Cream makes a special purple colored homemade vanilla ice cream exclusively for UMHB. Pretty tasty stuff.

Not a lot of hotel choices in Belton. Killeen has quite a few and Temple has added some in the past few years. There is a Shilo Inn located in Killeen. It is about a 20 minute drive to the stadium. Salado is just 10 minutes south of Belton and has a couple of newer hotels - a Best Western and a Holiday Inn Express. Salado is well known for its arts and antique stores. My in-laws live there.

Looking forward to the first playoff game in The CRUthedral. I don't know if the crowd will be as large as it was for Wesley (approximately 10,000), but I think attendance will be good.

Safe and uneventful travels to all.

Boggs and UMHB,

Many thanks for the intel, I will pass it along to one family I know that is going and maybe a second. We are not use to Southern Hospitality.
We are use to NWC fans who have been stuck inside for the last 90 days due to the rain.....and directions to coffee shops....lol

I know the UR players are excited but wanted to play someone else given we will be back again in 9 months. Your coach said both teams are not same as week 1. We have improved but not enough in my book to take this game unless MHB turns the ball over a few times for us. I watched a bit of your last few games on the webcasts and you boys really like to power the ball with counters, qb keeps, and sweeps more than we see. I see you have a couple new O linemen...versus the last time we played. We are fairly healthy, few guys nicked up and game time decisions.

30% chance of rain game day...we will see..

Best Regards

Congrads to UR and good luck in Texas. I will be pulling for your boys for the upset.

Enjoyed your posts this year but need to disagree with you on a couple of points you made regarding Chapman.

Recruiting: Our coaches work very hard at this, but with academic requirements getting higher every year, the costs continuing to escalate (around $60,000 tuition, room and board), academic scholarships having to be spread over more students, and so on, it can be a real task, when considering the same factors at other schools.

Offensive line and defensive line: Check the SCIAC board under stats, and you will see that CU's rushing game was near the top of the league, as well as the passing game. On defense CU's rush defense was right up there.

Going forward, Chapman should be right near the top and be competitive against the other teams. I do expect CLU to be back in the hunt next year. Their coaches hate and despise losing. Look for the transfers for a quick rebound next year.

Once again, good luck in Texas.

Plus K for all your posts this year.

Dalby,

Thanks for the kind words and I agree with your first paragraph, as the bar was raised it made recruiting tougher. UR is 55k, the IE demographic is not OC, and the admission standards are not much less than Chapman. ACT of 27 is the average. UR too had drafted a bit on the State's issues. My point about recruiting was more about Coach O's approach. He soft sells Chapman. He does not fight too hard to get kids in on a marginal basis. I know previous recruiting coordinators have been frustrated. My take is Coach O has been told not to ask and it goes with his personality. It is an impressive trip for a kid, given the facilities  own locker room, athletes weight room...UR does not have those items....maybe nicer practice fields but that is it.

Regarding your guys up front. Chapman lost the game to UR in the second half due to UR's d line took over the game. UR went with a four man front and the DTs were just shoving the guards back into the backfield, that is why your cut back play stopped working. Then CU tried to sweep and our DE stretched the field. We able to rush four and drop seven on passing downs. Until Chapman can bang with those types of kids a championship will not be in reach. Last year CLU was the most physical up front and hence the best defense.

No doubt they are close, but in the SCIAC quality linemen are a premium over skills, in my opinion.

Take care ..

I think the Regals suffered in loosing their O line coach to Oxy.

Regals. Good one.

I'm a CLU guy and I am probably too critical of them at times, but I have been here.  For all the talk, there was absolutley no backing it up, especially by Coach Mac.  Talking down on other teams is bad enough, then you get your teeth kicked in by one after claiming to be the best team they will play is just stupid.  I don't think I have been sold on this team since the end of last year (ULV and Chapman games) and don't see that changing.  I am curious to see who they are replacing Linfield with next year.

Jake P, thanks for being honest. Coach Mac is a good person just went out on the limb a bit. They will be back, UR gets them at home. It will be fun again. UR's biggest loss is there three seniors upfront on the d line and Taylor Irwin. The DT when in 40 tech will move to NG, #51 is who blew up the goal line stands against the Regals and Leo's and they have two pretty talented DE's as back up, so they will be tough up front the last half of the season. Sprinkle in a couple backers that will be back and db...their defense wont be as good as last year but still tough. Fudge at FS will be the best in the league before it is over, mark it. Most improved player on the team. . The O line returns four and they have some work to do in the off season..., Three QBs back, along with most of the RBs, Brown could play next year if he wants to use his 5th year...A couple talented sophomore WR will need to step up...not worried about that spot...How well UR does will be how well the O line improves.

Redlands always has an uptick in recruiting the following year when they win SCIAC. I would be worried if I was the rest of the SCIAC, I can see another Redlands run in the making.

Yep, nothing but crickets after fours years of talking sh*t. They sure can sling it but aren't here to take it when the shoe is on the other foot. Cal Who?

CLU Coach McEnroe has posted on his CLU blog.
I spoke very briefly with him as I was leaving the game Saturday, as he was sitting outside the CLU locker room.
As expected, he looked and sounded really "down". One of his comments was that CU has a good team. He is not
the type of guy/coach that will sit back and have a repeat year. I am sure he will recruit hot and heavy next year.

On a different note, his blog today referred to playing Brandman on Saturday. That is probably the problem, Brandman's main campus is in Irvine, and his team was playing in Orange.

All in jest!

See all you SoLutes up in Thousand Oaks next year. CU also travels to the DOG POUND next year! Hope the couches are not in the end zone.
