Thanks for the kind thoughts, all is good....Back to football

This week in the SCIAC...Most these games are so close they will come down to turnovers, coaches calls, and the great officials of the SCIAC conference

Oxy/CMS....The question here is how good is Oxy's O versus CMS defense. This is a tough one. I think Oxy will move the ball well on CMS, especially throwing the ball. Oxy should put up 30. Tough call, CMS could be a bit hung-over from beating my Pups. Slight edge to the wine drinkers of Oxy. Oxy by three sips

LaVerne/UR Pups....I am picking UR, UR will do a pretty good job of stopping the run. LV will try to run their outside zone read and throw the ball to hooks and curls. UR will need to dial it up to get a pass rush and the Dbs can not be scared to jam and freaking tackle. If UR defensive backs tackle like they did against CMS, even the Poets take them out. UR has to play their game, grind it out on the ground, force down and distance football, let the D generate a couple turnovers. UR by three pieces of kibble

Hens/Poets. The Poets look battered and going backwards. I am not sure what happen but playing a SS at RB wont help issues. The Hens are improved and have enough to stop and outscore the Poets. Hens will run the ball until the Poets stop it.  Hens by 7 eggs

The Regals and Panthers. The Panthers still have talent, they lost a few players to graduation, QB and best O linemen. If their QB can play well and no turnovers they will be a handful for the Regals. The Regals have good DBs and good speed on defense, so the panthers will try to run the ball right at the Regals D and take a page out of the Bulldogs game plan. This game is going to be close well into the fourth quarter. I will go with the Regals by three Kingsmen.

Color me shocked on how this season has gone.  I honestly thought it would be a battle between Chapman and Redlands, not Claremont and La Verne.  Claremont caught lightening in a bottle for the second week in a row and beat Oxy in a bizarre way.  La Verne squeaked one out at Redlands in a very entertaining game.

Claremont has an easier road ahead for them as they play Cal Lu, Pomona and Whittier.  La Verne still has Pomona, Cal Lu and Chapman, which should be a shootout.  The rushing attack of both teams should make this one fun to watch.

First loss to La Verne in 20 years. That streak was started in 1996, my last game at Redlands when we beat 8-0 La Verne at their house in OT for the SCIAC title. We denied their chance for a SCIAC title 3 peat, they haven't been the same since, looks like that could be changing. Anyway, Redlands stinks, beyond disappointed where the program is right now.

RFB, you were right these boys play like puppies. This is the worse tackling team I have ever seen. We lost to CMS and LV because we can not tackle. There are a lot of excuses that could be made given the kids that are out, but players were in position to make plays and just did not tackle.
It is pathetic, I am so sick and tired of seeing DBs come up and make a knock down shot instead of sticking your head across, drive and wrap. I know the bigger back landing on you does not feel good. Today backs know that kind of shot is coming and hurdle through it.

The program is not in shambles, they will be better next year because they only loose one player on the offensive and D lines, many others. Plus get most of the injured kids back. However I am not sure that group is good enough to contend for the SCIAC. I agree with RFB, they are not getting the number of quality kids they used to get. I am not sure if its the cost of the school, I don't think is it lack of effort by the coaches. I know the competition is greater than 20 years ago and the internet has leveled the playing field. Plus I think the new president has moved some of the emphasis off sports and flat line their budgets. The school has been on the diversity movement and trying to restrict donors from directing their donations. The school cost is 58k, and UR financial aid is not the greatest, compared to other schools in the SCIAC. ULV and CLU are roughly 10k less. Add into the fact other schools have and/or upgrading their facilities. Its just a combination of factors and I don't think the President cares. Even before he was sick, he would leave at halftime.
It is going to be a struggle for UR to stay in the upper third of the conference the next 10 years. If anyone can do it, it is Maynard.

I doubt he is going to leave UR, given his new home, wife's job etc...he is set up pretty well in the community.

The athletic talent is pretty bad, that much is evident. It's light years away from what it used to be when I played, even 10 years ago it was on a different level. The cost to attend Redlands is just plain wrong, it was barely worth it when I was attending.

Maybe Maynard decides to move on from Redlands?

As much as that would hurt the program, I wish he would, he deserves better. Doubtful he would do that now though, he has almost 30 years invested in the program.

If Maynard leaves and Good (or somebody similar) takes over expect to see Redlands in the bottom of the SCIAC on a consistent basis. Redlands is expensive, the facilities are subpar (besides the actual playing surfaces), and the Unis are really unattractive to recruits.

In regards to the talent being down, we have been over-recruiting the Northwest (about 20% of the roster) while ignoring Northern California (only about 10% of the roster). The NWC schools do a better job of both grabbing the better NW talent and Northern CA

Maynard is not leaving, period.  I understand the play calling issue,  but this season other than time management of the clock at G. Fox, which Maynard said in his radio interview it was his fault. It has been on the players lack of performance, poor blocking at the next level and horrible tackling, both are desire issues in my opinion.

Funny thing is if the injury bug does not hit UR like it has in a crazy way, some of these issues get swept under the rug because the league is has no stud teams, and we get past those two league losses. We still are missing our starting all conference MLB (good tackler) , loss both games with third string FS replacing our best defensive player on the team (good tackler), with out our all conference DE, with out starting center, guard, tackle, and WR.

I actually think more of a focus should be on So Cal (IE has a ton of talent) , Az and Nevada players. Vegas and Phx are not that far for parents to drive to UR for games and as we know, AZ has only Arizona Christian (Newer NAIA) and Nevada has no small college football programs. The NW kids seem to be attracted to So Cal to get out of the rain from what they have told me. I pin UR struggles on three issues. New Administration clearly has little regard for athletics where in the past they needed the male numbers, high net cost to attend (58k) and admissions has gotten a lot tougher. One needs a 25 ACT to get in now and 27+ to get any academic money, ..in general aide is tougher to get and the school has been maxed out on applicants so why give a lot of aid. The standards are higher than 10 and 20 years ago to get in with less aid, unless you are part of their diversity program. The school has been in the drivers seat due to the rising cost and declining seats available at UC and State schools the past 5 years.  It shows they have turned their backs on athletics and act as if they don't need it anymore. I know for a fact several of the studs at La Verne that beat us last week, wanted to go to UR but could not get in. Chapman faces the same formula issue too.

BTW as if uniform matter, I still do not get today's kids, most stupid criteria ever in reviewing a program, says a lot about society. UR does plan on changing their gear out. If uniform matters, unreal ???, you should have seen how many repairs were made on the old La Verne jerseys.

In terms of money...58K is A LOT of money and I think you need to consider cost of living too.  I don't have the numbers but I'm assuming that it's cheaper to live in the PacNW than it does in SoCal and that's probably reflective in the dollars earned per household between these regions whose families are footing the bill.

58K is steep but probably more digestible of a family earning a solid living in SoCal than that same family living the PacNW.  Just a thought.

BTW...I get ya on the uniforms olddog but they matter some and Redlands are terrible.

Redlands uniforms have went the charcoal gray look recently which I agree looks like crap. Redlands colors are maroon & gray and the uniforms needs a classic look, not trendy. They should take a page out of the Linfield playbook, talk about great uniforms.

Agree on NorCal, that's where the talent is at, especially the Sacramento area. They need to live up there and pull all of the overlooked talent, they have had success there recruiting before.
