CalCat...who gets married during Football season?

Correction on our QB he is the third best according to others, yes I like CU backers. I wonder is Martinez can check out, or if this is the case I think you will see UR do a lot of lining up on the ball to see what D, CU is sitting in before they get the final play call.
My daughter's brother in law and she is in the wedding so I'm "required" to attend. Good news her 2year, my grandson...if he can't handle wedding l get to take him outside so keeping my fingers crossed. I'm sure Martinez will check away from 44 when he can. In Redlands/Chapman 2019 game Martinez ran for only 29 yards. Mason Carvalho Redlands RB1 had 108 yards. Unfortunately for Redlands Mason not on Redlands roster. Martinez/ Carvalho combo killed the cats in their 2019 game and had their way with most of SCIAC until Mason got hurt toward end of season against CLU.

CalCat . . . May your grandson not give you a moments rest after the mean things you said about me on the Fan Poll board.

I got CMS over Cal Lu tomorrow. I've read how everyone here thought Redlands should have beat CMS by more had they played better. I would take the opposite position and say that if CMS' starting QB had not been injured  at the end of the Chapman game, or if their backups would have had more playing time experience, then CMS would have won outright and possibly by double digits. They only needed one first down to have won by 3 points.

Dr. Doolittle

I got CLU beating CMS (surprise), Redlands close win over Chapman, and La Verne big win over Whittier.

Redlands should thank their lucky stars they got CMS when they did.

I suspect olddog is preparing 4 column inches for us with his next post.

At the request of DOC...Here you go.

Hats off to both teams. The players and coaches on both sides had their teams ready to play. The game very easily could have gone to CU. CU had two chances to score two more TD in the first half but came out of it with 3 points.

The game, I think UR won because they made better adjustments than CU and as Mike Maynard would say win the turnover battle and win the game, the two interceptions to 0. The only negative thing I can say about CU is WR #9 talking to the UR sidelines all night, check that first half..not the front runner when things got tight. Back when you hit WR across the field that would have never happen, but like everything else in this world is now soft.

Chapman came out rolling, two straight TDs attacking our weak side for some big plays. I don't know if the LB or SS bit down to tight but when the ball went that way were out numbered. CU also had success pulling their guards to the strong side and creating numbers on us when they ran the ball. We tried to bring 3 and CU was ready with guards pulling around and sealing us off, give the QB free lanes. Time to make adjustments and UR did a few.
First UR started walking the linebacker down late in the snap sequence so CU would have to adjust blocking schemes on the fly. The other adjustment was UR went to a straight 40 front many times. These two adjustments stopped the run game from mid second quarter on. UR only gave up one big pass home run in the second half and of course the big stop in the fourth was key. I felt CU got a favorable spot to make it closer than it should have been. The ref did not seem to confident coming in to mark it. The other big play of the second half was our DC dialed up the blitz at the right time. We brought the invert off the edge, he made just enough contact for the ball to flutter and ironically the other invert caught it. We kept winning the field possession game in the second half and that was key. We lost a corner during the game and his back up held up well. Lastly the D line never wore down. I counted 7 or 8 players rotating, keeping our pressure and up and getting to balls. Hats off to the defense for the last 2.5 quarters of the game. They did not fold, they dug in...

The offense, Saturday night the third best QB in the league according to some, made Jim Good, look Good. Keefe is the real deal and between him and the balance of team speed (this is the quickest Chapman team I have ever seen) UR could not run the ball. However unlike in the past UR O line did not fold, you could see they were not going to panic and wanted the challenge of taking on this quick team. Many times freshman linemen were in the game. Our Husky boys had a few tough moments but you could tell they learned from the LF game and never gave up, Coach Rick has the most improved position on the team. I guess you get a lot more out of playing LF than playing Southwest Tech. Since UR could not run the ball, Good decided to play a game of chicken with Keefe and company. We went empty set and Saturday night Nathan Martinez was D3 version of Russel Wilson. Keefe tried to speed rush Nathan and then changed it up breaking down. Either way Nathan escaped him. CU brought 5 or 6 and Nathan made them pay throwing to where they left or a drag under the coverage. I have been going to D3 and NAIA games for the last 25 years and I can not remember a better second half by one player. Close was some of Eric Rogers performance but he needed help, Nathan did it alone, his timing route throws were off the charts. It was treat to watch him play, all for 10 bucks.

Moving forward having a bye week is good, I counted maybe four players that were hurt but looked like they could heal up. I would not bother working on Whittier's formations, I would have my scout team run LF and MHB offense/defense. It was nice to see the president take an interest in the team too cheering them on, instead leaving at halftime like the last one. She appears to enjoy athletics, given they are 1/3 of the student body it is important.

The most honest thing that I can say, is that CLU is not as good as they could be.  I blame the coaching prep/game planning and play calling.  They knew that CMS was going to run the ball down their throat and the defensive game plan was not very effective.  Nor did they adjust in any way.  The DB's never kept outside containment and CMS has hard running RB who is tough to bring down.  It was old school run and smash mouth football by CMS, and I commend them for sticking with what works,  The offensive play calling two weeks in the row was terrible  and I blame Lugo.  The O-line was not able to pick up the blitz and they deserve to lose.  The QB was shaken last week and seems to have happy feet in the pocket since last weeks drilling.  They will try to salvage the season with Whittier and a tough game against Redlands for the Smudge Pot!

How did the CLU staff sour so soon? Look at the top three teams in the SCIAC, low coaching Turnover...CU, UR, and CMS, even PP. I talked about UR new defensive coaches this season, but the improvement is night and day compared to the first couple weeks. I don't know what was done day to day but the break downs are far less. You can tell when the coach only spends a couple seconds with the kids on the sidelines. I think CLU issue is playing powder puff teams in the preseason. Play LF and even GF it makes you better for league. You want your weaknesses exposed to a certain extent.
Plus recruiting Maynard used to say we will play anyone, anywhere. Look at the last few years the games and teams we seek to play Trinity, MHB, LF, GF, NCC, ....I can only think of one power puff we played the last dozen years. It was bad too.

My son says the coaching staff is much improved, but there were a few mental mistakes that need to be cleaned up.  Hope they continue to play well and improve.  Lugo off to a great start as Head Coach!

What a difference a month-and-a-half makes.
