Football and other male sports bring in male students.  Without athletics, schools would be 80% or higher female.  Men don't see the value in education, traditional labor jobs pay much better.

Interesting, and obvious article.  Thank you for sharing.  My profession, veterinarians, has seen an even more dramatic shift in percentage of genders.  In the 1970s, school Vet enrollment was about 95% male, and this has flipped since then to be about 92% female since 2015.  Unfortunately, statistics reveal that the average male veterinarian career is over 30 years and the average female veterinarian work under 10 years.  There has been a dramatic shortage in DVMs in CA, perhaps, as a result.  Male sports are necessary to keep young males engaged in school at every level.

Only 40% men at Chapman?  That's my pick right there.  Down in Orange.  Good beaches.  Lots of sun.  And 1.5 girls for every guy.  Sign me up.

Coed quality works as a recruiting tool for St Thomas.  Chapman needs to lower their game.

The price is a big determinant as well.  The average price for tuition in the SCIAC is around 60k, just for tuition.  Add room and board your climbing into the 70's.  Redland is 75k all in.  Depending on where you look, the median household income in CA is about 80K.  That is not a recipe for success.  For a married family making 140,000/year, this is what they will pay at Redlands.  27k out of pocket for 23/24 school year according to UR Net Price Calculator.  108k for 4 years of school.  Wow.

Geez 10, you mean our goverment caused college tuition inflation by passing out "free loans" to anyone? Sounds like what we all are experiencing today, via passing out free covid money...irony.

Article in the LA Times regarding struggles at Whittier, which has seen enrollment decline from roughly 1850 to 1200 since 2018.  Besides the numerical issues, there's apparently a leadership crisis.  Endowment for a school that size is actually decent ($120m).

One of the accompanying charts shows enrollment at La Verne with a similar percentage decline.

Thanks for posting, I refuse to buy the Times so I missed it. Interesting how they had money for her son and a job, but not football.
It is clear what is going on at Whittier, as white alumni aged out and die off from Boards. Pat does not think dropping football at Oxy or WC is not an attack on male masculinity, but it is clear that it is. Talk to former Oxy FB players.
They both have the funding especially Oxy. Rumor is Whittier is looking to dump some land they have too. I wonder why the Times did not mention the president worked remotely, and the remodel.
I really do not understand with declining enrollment, drop another 150 males from the school?  Majority were minorities, but males in a masculine sports, so damn them too my agenda is more important, than some men staying on the right track. Its pretty clear as to what her goal. Others are just afraid to be direct.

Old Dog, it's clear that these institutions are attempting to squash the Toxic Masculinity that Football brings to their institutions.  Sad to say, but priorities are changing.

The president is a business person and not an educator. She is trying to run it as a business.  My guess is she will sell off the assets and deplete the endowment. This will "prove" Whittier is no longer viable. Follow the money here and see who is benefiting from all of this.

From the NESCAC board.  It may be a trend.

"The word around the Amherst Football program is the Administration at Amherst has changed their direction in terms of their support for Football and male helmet/contact sports in general. I have no first hand knowledge of this from 100 miles away but have heard this repeatedly from those connected over the last couple of years."

As much as I have been disappointed for years that the NESCAC doesn't participate in the football championship playoffs, I believe it would be a shame if Amherst were ever to drop their football program. Especially since they don't allow playoff participation, with a nine game schedule, I really don't see why they would want to do that, other than, as suggested by the NESCAC board quote from the anonymous sources that the administration and faculty are like the 1939 U of Chicago and 2000 Swarthmore people who hated football. :) I can't imagine the underlying reason (or contributory reason) would be financial at all. As many of you know, even our MIAA Calvin University has added football after decades of faculty and some alumni being very against that. Regardless, I hope "the end" doesn't happen at Amherst. That would be sad.

Plus, you get to see the "new" Stagg Field (named after the "Grand Old Man" Amos Alonzo Stagg, long time U of Chicago fb coach, which also has a pair of the original doors from the old Stagg Field stadium. You can also see the original first Heisman trophy awarded to the late Jay Betwanger, which is displayed in their athletic building. I had the privilege of meeting/visiting with Mr. Berwamger for over 4 hours many years ago before he passed away. A really nice gentleman. Anyway, you will enjoy the campus visit. Just be careful of the outlying surrounding area.
