I both agree and disagree with you on coaching style.  On the one hand it is important for a coach to be positive in his approach.  On the other though, schools have abdicated on the level of discipline - along with parents as well.  Kids get their own way too much these days.  A shout now and then is needed.  I don't think it hurts to have a coach who sets a tone for the program and sticks to it.  Off the field, particularly for college players, it can be different, i.e. more collegial if you will, but on the field - it has to be all business.  In the end winning is a lot more fun than losing.  One more extreme example is when TO wakes up and realizes that Parcels is in charge, he will be the player that he has the potential to be.

firstdown...I think we are saying the same thing.  A coach can be strict and all business bit doesnt have to be demeaning and insulting.  Being positive and encouraging gets much better results and also encourages team unity and coach-player bonding.  Its just a much better situation.  A player will go to the end of the world for a coach he loves and respects, it might not be the case if that relationship does not exist.

Tigre---- Ha, his scare tactics were horrible, yet funny. He was good at being harsh on us, i will agree with you on that, but i think those negatives really helped us become better men. IMHO, His tantrums taught us to take such negatives and turn them into positives whether on the field or off the field. That's just part of life. We learn from the bad so that we do not make the mistake to repeat it again.

I had the pleasure of working in Tuscaloosa during Bear Bryant's era.  Coach was never easy on his players.  A loss at Legion Field on a Saturday afternoon meant a full practice back in Tuscaloosa that evening and on Sunday morning as well.  Nonetheless, Coach's players would walk into a fire if he asked them to do so.  Coach was tough and wasn't timid about giving feedback when necessary, but if a player need help in any aspect of his life, Coach would be the first one there with that help.  While Coach mellowed a bit from those early days in Junction with A&M, he always demanded his players give their best, but when a mistake was made, he also was the first one to step up and say it was his fault as well.    The secret was respect - and with Coach Bryant it was a two way street.

I've always liked the positive motivator coaches better. If it's possible to coach football well, without giving the kids complexes... then why the heck not do it the nice way?

On the other hand... two of my alma mater's coaches are like... absolute foils for eachother on the field. The WR coach is the almost never raises his voice but firmly gives corrective feedback and postive motivation. The "come on guys, you can do it" sort. I've actually overheard parents mumering, "Wow, now that's the kind of coach you want to have as a role model for your children" as he coaches the guys on the bench. The OL coach is totally the opposite... he screams at the absolute top of his lungs when his players mess up... often the "are you an idiot, that was so stupid" type of coach... the type that makes you cringe as you listen. Both have coached multiple All-Americans since 2000. Both are adored by the players.

In watching the way each of the Wheaton coaches handled the players in their own ways over my brother's football career, I think the reason the coaches are adored and effective has a lot more to do with their demeanor off the field.... be it their strong moral character, and their obvious love of their players and commitment to helping them improve in all aspects of their lives, whether it was physical, mental, relational, or spiritual. I think if a player knows that their coach loves them, and would do anything for them, they wouldn't hesitate to respond well to correction, no matter how it's dished out.

I have been with coaches like you all describe during my career.  And you either love them or hate them or even a bit of both.  The Positive Coaching Alliance is primarily geared toward youth sports and hs sports.  Thats not to say that it isnt applied on college or professional levels.

Many youths are discouraged from youth sports because they say , "its not fun".....sometimes they may not like the sport, many many times they are discourged by a youth coach who is a screamer and a jerk.  Many kids, like my son, are told at an early age, you dont have what it takes.  How in the world do you tell an 8 year old, he will never make it in sports.  We all know the Michael Jordan story.......

I personally think the best of both philosophies make the best coach, one who is stern and demanding of his players yet positive and encouraging at the same time...its really not that hard to do.

Hey Dawgs,

To answer your question about who will win the SCIAC, my answer will really surprise you......Oxy, again! Its hard to argue with a team whose Sr's and the leaders of the team have only lost 5 games in their 3 year career at Oxy.  They are lead by a group of guys that have gone to the playoffs twice, won a couple games, and have played against #1 team in the country twice!! Im confident the 46 or so new guys on team will quickly develop the winning attitude that Oxy players have developed over the last few years.  The Sr.'s on the team will not stand for anything less than perfection.  Realistically, they know that if they go 8-1 and dont win the SCIAC and miss the playoffs, the year will be considered a failure, and they will practice and play accordingly.  But as we say the games are won and lost on the field, and I cant wait for the kickoff.  El Tigre, I'll be seeing you tomorrow night but I as far as the scrimmage, Oswald and I will be in Chicago visiting a friend, so unfortunately we wont be there.

4 is the smallest composite number, its proper divisors being 1 and 2. 4 is the smallest squared prime. 4 is the only number in the English language for which the number of letters in its name is equal to the number itself. 4 is also the number of titles in a row the tigers will have in '07!! Go Oxy

In regards to the way people coach I think it should kind of be a mix of the screamer and the calm guy.  The thing is to know when to push the right buttons.  A good point a former coach of mine had was that you could always start off as a jerk then be a little cooler but if you start off as the cool laid back guy it's too hard to get angry and still be taken seriously.

What's up ULV guys?  No news on Dean Mozell?  ;)
Hail to the Orange!!!

Besides Oxy's scrimmage against C of C, does anyone know if the other SCIAC schools will be doing the same. If so are they going to be at those SCIAC school's site or off campus.
