You always want to get to the dance....otherwise you dont have a chance to......SCORE!   :D

If you play one or four......you were there.  Having the opportunity to play for a legitmate national title has to be very exciting.

I cant speak for past years and am not as familiar with the history of how close Oxy-Redlands games were, but last years was a good one. This years will be a good one.  No matter how much smack anyone talks. ::)

And....didnt I read in Kickoff that they picked Oxy to not make the playoffs this year?  Just some food(cat food) for thought! ;)

Here is a possibility that no one has mentioned, Redlands beats Oxy, Oxy beats CLU and CLU beats Redlands, a three way tie......I guess there are tie breakers to determine who gets first place, but what about second and the possibility of the playoffs?  A weak preseason might hurt Oxy in that scenario.

All conferences have tie breakers to determine who is awarded the playoff spot... usually there are several levels to account for craziness of the first tiebreaker being insufficient. I would assume all three are crowned season champs, however, I don't really know what the SCIAC rules are yet.... and somehow I'm doubting the conference website tells us that.

As far as who else gets to be in the playoffs, that's entirely seperate and determined by NCAA criteria. (ie. it is theoretically possible that the conference would have determined someone to be the second playoff team by their criteria, but the NCAA would pick another team (or neither team) based on their own criteria.

I could go into more depth about what the particulars are if you are really interested.

Diehard----I hope that your cookies aren't made with your pups crap.
gross... really just gross

I'm actually extremely anal-retentive (haha!) about the ingredients I put in my cookies... pure vanilla extract, real butter, only eggs from chickens that haven't been pumped with hormones, unbleached flower, ghirardelli chocolate chips, blah blah... in this day an age when the baking is usually done by professional women like myself who are very busy, I figure there's there's just no point unless you do it right. If I'm going to eat stuff that's full of weird chemicals I can't pronounce, I might as well buy chips ahoy.  ::)

I don't know about a tailgate... the idea of some of you people meeting eachother in real life scares me  :P

Does anybody know why Cal Lu only has 53 players on their online roster?  Is that a correct number of players?  Is there some type of JV team?  What's up?

OxyBob,

I played at Redlands, and I still live in this town.  Yes, oxy does have nice towns around it, but Eagle Rock is trash!!!!  And the campus is gross.  You gotta love all the trash talking going on....you know the season is here!

dawgs go deep

OK Oxy Bob......Eagle Rock isnt exactly the garden spot of So Cal.....in fact I have driven through, blinked and was in Arcadia.  There may be a few college hangouts that you fondly remember, but if you sober up and go back now....well most of them are dumps.  Just think your town is named after what some hallucinating hippie thought he saw on a big rock.  Wow, now there is something to be proud of.

And yes, Oxy has won the last couple of years. From what I gather you beat a very average Redlands team and a decent CLU team last year. THATS IT.  You played no one in the preseason and beat the nobody's of the SCIAC....then what happened when you played a good team???????   Wow...that was quite a memorable season.  The number national 9 ranking is based on beating a bunch of average to poor teams.  In fact there are some good hs teams that could go undefeated playing your preseason schedule.

You want to talk smack...go ahead.

Wake up BOB! :o

All this griping about Oxy's non-conference schedule being directly responsible for its 2005 playoff one-and-out makes no sense if you look at 2004.

Same three teams, yet Oxy won two games in the postseason. Gee, don't you think that the bracket had more to do with 2005 than the non-conference schedule?

Thank goodness that Pat shows up as an unbiased voice of reason.

Yes indeed, Oxy beat Willamette and Concordia Moorhead to get to the Regional finals in
04 . . . this despite having the non-conference schedule that it had.

Drawing Linfield in round 1 in '05 was unlucky.

And to beat a dead horse, I'd rather go to the dance and take my lumps than be sitting at home . . . and no, I find no shame in being monkeystomped by one of the best programs in the country.

Eagle Rock was so named by the local natives, I believe the Chumash or Gabriellinos, based on the very distinctive shadow cast that looks like an eagle soaring on the prominent rock protruding from the northern foothills.

Anyone who knows anything about local real estate knows that Eagle Rock is today is what Silver Lake and Los Feliz were about 5-10 years ago . . . on the cutting edge of revitalization with soaring property values.  Neighboring Highland Park (which many non-locals mistakenly believe is also Eagle Rock) is further behind the curve but is also going through gentrification in its residences . . . the commercial area cannot be far behind.

Anyone who thinks Oxy's campus is "gross" has either never been there or is suffering from hallucinations.  It is referred to in national college publications as "an oasis" and is well known well regarded for its architecture and grounds.

All this hate from Bulldog nation eminates from envy of Oxy's recent success . . . and has it ever occurred to anyone that Oxy tries to match itself with schools that are similar in philosophy .  . . both academically and athletically?  That's why I personally think that Willamette would be a good pre-season choice for the Tigers.  Heck,  Lewis and Clark beat Redlands not that long ago . . . some programs run in cycles . . . Oxy's sure has.

Frankly, I think that there's a lot to be said for letting a team develop organically, gaining confidence through winning before taking on teams  like the 'Cats . . . I don't think Redlands' non-conference schedule seems to have done much for it over the past couple of years . . . how a team does in the end is a reflection of the players on the field,  not the teams it played at the beginning of the season, though the results of those games will  impact the players on the field.

A few years back (ok, a decade or so),  Oxy scheduled some DII teams out of Northern Cal and Utah for preseason play.  I don't recall those games doing anything as far as bettering the Tigers . . .  although they did help the injury list grow.

Thought you would be interested that two of the games in the MIAC Pick 'ems this week are Cal Lutheran @ Pacific Lutheran and Whitworth @ Redlands.  (PLU and Redlands are getting the early nod.)

I have to tell you guys, as a former resident of Pasadena (moved north to the Bay Area in '93) and father of a D3 player in the MIAC, this board has really picked up and is fun to read.  :)  I note, though, that there is no SCIAC thread on the Pick 'ems site.  Perhaps this is the year to get that going?  ;)

I'm fairly sure the roster currently lists only players returning from last season.

The point I was trying to make is that better non-conference competition helps better prepare a team when they are unluckily sent in the first round to the #1 seed or getting a bad break with seeding(Oxy/2005). Redlands has never had the opportunity that Oxy had in 2004 but has still been able to play at a very high level when sent on the road against teams like #1 Central in 1990, #1 Wisconsin-Lacrosse(DIII Champs) in 1992, #1 St. Johns in 2002, and #1 Linfield in 2003. Playing better non-conference competition helped those Redlands teams prepare for the post-season.

Redlands? It can share in the glory of its local feeder school, Crafton Hills College:

Edit: To be fair, Redlands was used as the background for a New England college in the movie Rules of Attraction, which, according to RottenTomatoes.com, was "a tiresome movie about unsympathetic college kids engaging in self-destructive behaviors." Gee, I had no idea they'd made a feature film starring RFB.

All SCIAC schools have beautiful campuses. Redlands has been used for many movie/commercial shoots as I am sure many other SCIAC schools have well.

Snap... Orange County was shot at Oxy??? That's awesome! It's like my favorite movie... I have most of it memorized. Kudo points for Oxy. :)

Jack Black: You're overreacting, dude. I never went to college and check me out. I'm kick ass!

Ben Stiller: Why aren't you wearing your pants, Joe?
Jack Black: I tripped, and uh, then I had to take 'em off to run faster out of the flames!

Shawns Girlfriend: Principal Harbert, as you know, there was an oil spill off the coast of Redondo, and today's paper says hundreds of seagulls have been affected. So I propose a school-sponsored fundraiser, with all the proceeds going to the seagull rehabilitation fund. As the community service Ieader, I think we would be morally remiss if we did nothing for these seagulls.
Chevy Chase as principal: Fine. One more. Last one. After this, we let all sick and endangered animals die horrible deaths. Agreed?

Guy from third rock from the sun: A writer!?? What do you have to write about? You're not oppressed, you're not gay.

Great, great film, with a ton of cameos by some really excellent comedians. Anyhow, apparently it was also shot at Cal Tech though... sooo... I think the fact that all these school have been shot at has a lot to do with their proximity to Hollywood. :)

I actually think both Redlands and Oxy are quite pretty. However I must admit that I've seen much more of the Oxy campus, after having gotten trapped on campus for like... 45mins while trying leave after the basketball playoff game last year.  >:( Is the area really so dangerous that they have to close all the exits to car traffic aside from that one which they have a security guard at???
