Dawg fan....a player, any player, must always do what is best for the team.  So must the coach!

If it means waiting your turn, switching positions......you must do it.  From the coaches standpoint, he must play who he believes will help the team the most, not who is most popular.

Is Willamete still running the same type of offense they did when Oxy played them in the playoffs in 2004?  If so does anyone think that will be a problem for Cal Lu?

Cal Lu has a fly package that they use often... I would think that would help their defense prepare for Willamette -- albiet Willamette has more variations

DGD:

There'll probably be game stats & a play by play rundown later in the week...

Despite winning the game it sounds like the Kingsmen might have a case of fumblitis?  One was recovered and one was lost... is there anyone who attended the game that could give more info on those loose balls?

RFB: Very good suggestion regarding Selway and Wabby. However, who has seen Wabby play? Nothing negative towards DGD who appears to be friends with the family and has been very supportive of him, but as we all know, there is a significant difference between high school and college ball. All the accolades and high school awards don't make it happen in the first season at college. There is a definite learing curve to go through.

You also have to account for the knowledge of the offense and the ability to know where all the players on the field are.  That takes some time and experience.  Coach Maynard might be trying to avoid running a vanilla version of the offense for the time it would take to get a frosh QB acclimated.

Note: Sorry for the back to back posting, but I was responding as I was catching up.

Oxy...now that the hatchet is buried...(we wont say where tho)....OMG, I agree!  I think the learning curve for the freshman we refer to will be short due to the extremely intricate offense that he operated with in hs.  A frosh still has to adjust to the difference in speed, size and college life to be successful.  All that remains to be seen.

Watchman

It is not all that unusual for a high school QB to move to WR or DB when moving on to the college level.  They find success at these positions because for the most part they are usually great athletes and they are able to understand the patterns and, in the case of a WR, know how to adjust if the QB gets into trouble to give him more options.

My suggestion would be that Selway remain taking snaps as the #2 guy because he is most familiar with the offense, but when he's not taking snaps he should be working at the WR because that's where he can help this team the most right now.  He would be the best choice to step in should something happen to Saras (ala Nick Brown last year).  It would be impossible for a freshman to come in, without the benefit of the spring training, and have any success unless he was an absolute superstar.   And, quite frankly, if he was that he wouldn't be playing at the D3 level.  The young freshman should bide his time, learn the system, play scout, pay his dues, and make the most of it when he is given the opportunity to play.

Look at John David Booty.  As a true freshman he could have started at quite a few D1 schools, most D2 schools and any D3 school.  Point is he didn't.  He went to USC, competed for the position and after paying his dues is being rewarded for his sacrifice.  Mark Sanchez is now following suit as a back-up.  It's just the order of things.

Coach Maynard just needs to take full charge of this team and the staff.  It might be a good idea for him to take over as the OC (or even give the QB coach a stab at it) and move Coach O'Boyle back to the defense where he was.  He certainly can't do any worse!

Was at the Cal Lu game. One of the fumbles was from a great hit on the wide receiver. The other lost fumble on a strip of the running back. O-line needs some work to give Jones more time in the pocket. Defense bent some in the first half. Didn't put much pressure on the QB. In the second half, defense played some inspired ball. Hard hitting by th LB's and better pass coverage in the secondary. D-line finally started to force the QB to move around some got a couple of sacks to help the cause. King's pick with less than 2 minutes was a terrible decision by the QB. Tightend was was double covered. Great to get out with a win. PLU has had their number in the past in Washington.

Cal Lu likes to call their offense, "The Purple Stretch". It is a variation of a pro style and the fly, if you want to get technical.

On to football.  Tooth,  Redlands by 3 over Trinity?   Not to upset our Dog fans but after last weekend and reading the post game analysis provided by Watchman you still stand by that?  If Watch and DGD are correct about the OC and offensive line don't see how a traditional power like Trinity could be upset.

You know, my pick is based on SCIAC boosterism (after my lack of faith in Claremont proved misplaced)  and the fact that I think that Redlands will improve . . . if they get spanked again, well then I'll be convinced that there are problems in the east . . .

And I'm not sure how good Trinity is this year.  They're 1-1 coming off a close loss to Texas Lutheran, but I haven't read enough to figure out what exactly that means.

cheers,

I have no doubt they could have made it and I believe it was a turning point in the game for both teams.

Was that not 3 and a half in the 1st quarter?  I was still on the 91 Fwy. I wish 590 AM would have told me the game was over before I got there. I could have gone straight to Morongo and waited for dgd.

Dens...I went to the Morongo before the game......I should have stayed .....I was ........en fuego! :D

Looks like the LA Daily News is going to give Division III some coverage this season.

I have really noticed a huge shift in the amount of coverage that every news outlet is giving to D3 in the last 4 years.  When I started at Oxy in 2002 there was hardly anything, but now with the recent success of Oxy and Cal Lu last year D3 sports has gained the attention of many people throughout Southern California!

I hope that Owens does well at Chapman. For the past years at Whitter, he was doing a fine job bringing that program up. Heck, he did a fine job at giving coaches at redlands and even oxy the fits when they were so close i giving them battles. If this occurs at Chapman, look to see coaches have fits in about two years from now.

Hopefully Chapman turns it around,,they seem to have some decent athletes on the field but for whatever reason can never put it together..

Thanks for the info Oxy Bob. It should be an interesting game. Despite being 1-1, Menlo hasn't given up an offensive TD yet in 2 games. In fact they have only allowed 3 drives to get just inside the 20, two 4th down tries didn't make it and a takeaway. Gave up two special teams TDs though.
