You're welcome. By the way, I meant to wish Linfield good luck against Hardin-Simmons, not Chapman against Menlo. But good luck to Chapman anyway. And, of course, good luck this week to Tigers of all persuasions.

The Trinity Tigers played most of last week's game with their third string QB.  One was suspended and one was hurt early.  Also they played most of the game with the 2nd running back.  One of them had a concussion and the doctors will decide his fate this week.

I think the suspended QB will be back for the Bulldog game.

I hope everyone gets well soon.

To the question of moving Selway to WR, there is precedent for that at Redlands.  Marty Rincon was an All-SCIAC performer at QB as a Soph and blew out his knee, opening it up for Danny Ragsdale to move from WR (where he was all conf) to becoming the Gagliardi Trophy winner 2 years later @ QB.  Rincon then came back as what else?  A WR.  Maynard knows better than anyone there that it can be done.  If he decides not to do it, there must be a reason, but I don't think he would hesitate in the least to get this done.

Any word on our the performance of the OL the are promoting for All-America?  Mark Thom I think it is?

I was told by a freind of mine that a kid who played qb at Venice hs and then went to Louisville but transfered enrolled at Chapman and will be the qb this year.  The kids last name is Miller.  Anyone have any insight?

Fox....I dont think the starting qb was suspended, I think he got hurt.  That is what the Trinity website says anyway.

You guys ever check out any JUCO ball?  Pierce College is pretty close to my neighborhood.  How would you say those games compare to local SoCal D3 ball?

Many great athelets who do not qualify academically by NCAA standards go to JC for a year or two to get their grades up.  "Also some kids who are recruited by D1 programs but dont get an offer go to JC to work on their game, speed , size , stats etc. and end up with a D1 offer.

Quote from: OxyBob on September 12, 2006, 08:47:20 PMEvery once in awhile you see a guy with talent come out of a JC football program. I remember there was a guy who played for City College of San Francisco, transferred to USC, and did pretty well in D-I and in the pros.

I think that the first string QB was suspended, the second string QB started and then suffered a concussion, so TU played w/ the third stringer.

O. J. played JC ball but had USC in between JC and the NFL. The best player who comes quickly to my mind and who went from JC ball to the NFL without playing at a 4 year college was Dick "Night Train" Lane - arguably the best DB of all time.

Watchman

Here's another example of a JUCO success story, a little more recent than the other USC story, and with kind of an ironic twist.

About 5 years ago, at Mission Viejo High School, there was a tandem in the backfield of a RB by the name of Robbie DuBois and a FB named Ryan Powdrell, who also played linbacker.  Now, this dynamic duo just pounded the heck out of any defense that it came upon and blasted Chino HS in the CIF D-2 final at Edison Field.  DuBois has the distinction of being the #2 all time HS rusher in Orange County  history.  Both received full rides to Fresno State as well as offers from at least a half a dozen more D-1 schools.  DuBois took Fresno State up on their offer but Powdrell's dad thought that Ryan wasn't ready for the academic pressure that he would encounter while being under scholarship as well, so Ryan  enrolled at Saddleback College a JC in Mission Viejo.

Dubois went on to struggle academically at Fresno St and had difficulty fitting in on the football field as well.  Meanwhile, Powdrell was getting the feel of college life without the pressure of "having to play" and prospered at the JC level while playing ball at a very competitive level.  Because he was able to become acclimated and ease into college life in a less stressful environment he was able to prepare himself for and even better opportunity than Fresno St.  He earned a scholarship to USC and because he was patient and worked hard and seized the opportunity when it was presented to him, he is the starting FB for the Trojans this year and making a powerful statement for their offense.

What happened to Robbie DuBois?  He dropped out of Fresno State after his 4th attempt to make it there and is now attending Saddleback College and playing football for the Gauchos.  It took some time but it seems he learned something from his high school friend.

Joe Horn went from JC to the NFL.  He learned how to use a cell phone at Itawamba JC. :D

tooth.....the Trinity web site says that Blake Barmore started both games and was injured in the second.  Now I dont know if the qb who was supposed to start the first game was suspended for two games or not.  But, the kid who started game one also started game two.  At least that is what the Trinity web site says.

Up here in Central CA I attend a few Modesto JC games each season. There is some very good football, but the atmosphere just isn't there like at a D-III or even high school game. I notice that most of the players from MJC that go on seem to head to NAIA schools. What about So Cal JCs?

Pat Coleman

SCAC board has more discussion of this. Second-stringer was the suspended one.

My impression of JUCO ball is that the focus is on playing D1; academics are stressed only to the point of being "NCAA eligible."  A few D3 programs (Menlo is one) have a lot of JUCO players but my sense is that most JUCO players who end up at D3 consider it a failure.
