Today's final comments.

Jumping the bandwagon for Cal Tech football. Come on. It would be great. the SCIAC could play a full 10 game schedule. More games, more football, more banter, and it would improve Cal Tech overall. There is no way they would fall to the level of Oberlin with that 44 game losing streak.  Besides, the MIT beaver logo is pretty fierce looking, more so than a Poet. Maybe before my kids play ball in college, there will be a program.

Or the "thats allright, thats ok, you're going to work for us someday"

CalTech even has trouble finding enough pitchers for their baseball team, but they try. Many of their basketball players never played in high school.  There was a story last year in Sports Illustrated about that.   I think that MIT has many more students than Caltech, so they can come up with the numbers for all sports.

I just checked MIT has 4070 and Caltech has 891.  That is 4.5679012 times larger for MIT. :)

Given that there are only three significant figures in Cal Tech's number... MIT's actually 4.57 times larger :)
Plus k for you!

i bring up cal tech and we all start getting brainy. maybe we should do this more often?
side note: i wonder if anyone is willing to count the times we heard about the 5th string qb at redlands as compared to the time we heard about all-american and possible free-agent signing andy collins? i'm guessing it is at least 2-1 not in favor of collins.

thought for the night- why doesn't the sciac sign a deal with the nwc and have every sciac team play at least 2 nwc teams for out of conference games? seems logical to reduce extreme travel.

Quality idea, far better competition than CC... and maybe we can just stop answering L&C's phone calls.  :-\
Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Who would ever think that a rumored trade for Billy Volek would affect this board.  Elliott is on the practice squad, with only two QB's on the roster for SD.  Volek trade may keep him on the PS, but does not bode well.  If this is Elliott's fate, I doubt Collins, at 6-2, will get any serious looks.

And let me express my deepest apologies for going off topic here.

Tigersports---- wow, these are some harsh words ( "I doubt Collins, at 6-2, will get any serious looks"). Give the guy some postive rienforcement. Maybe luck will turn and call his way in the spring. Did u not ever hear about some midget named Doug Fluite. Come on man.

"NFL Draft Scout" undoubtedly in an effort to be extremely thorough currently contains on its list of 2007 prospects a number of names, which is more than the number of players who eventually will be actually signed to NFL contracts from the whole 2007 class (not to mention the much more limited number of 2007 players who will make NFL rosters) by a factor of about 4 to 6. NFL Draft Scout indicates that it believes Collins' height is 6 feet and 7/8 of an inch - very short for an NFL QB. What the San Diego Chargers are doing this year with respect to its QBs will have no effect on Collins' chances of playing in the NFL.

Eye of da TIGER

While playing QB might be unlikely for Mr. Collins in the NFL, you are forgetting one thing, Andy is an athlete.  He is one of the strongest guys in the SCIAC pound for pound!! there are not too many QB's in D3 that can clean nearly 400 lbs and military press like 275.  Maybe he would have a better shot playing DB or safety in the league, then at 6'2" he is considered big.  Anyhow, lets worry about winning a SCIAC championship before we start thinking about if Andy will let us be in his entourage once he's in the league.
4 is the smallest composite number, its proper divisors being 1 and 2. 4 is the smallest squared prime. 4 is the only number in the English language for which the number of letters in its name is equal to the number itself. 4 is also the number of titles in a row the tigers will have in '07!! oswald-
lets be a bit nice here to L&C. those kids are in a terrible situation. a macalester and kenyon-esque (3-4 years ago that is) situation. they went into the off-season probably unsure as to whether or not there would even be a program. one thing is for sure- they care about their play and performance. they hate losing just as much as any of our respective programs do. unfortunately it appears their administration doesn't share their care or passion. they are proud and the look in their eyes is one of pride and willingness to play. to have their season be cut to 4 games will be one of the most painful memories for those men, especially for their seniors last year. will they get stomped? yes. this year will probably be painful for them. however, the best thing we can do is stump for that program as much as possible.

as for my own Stags, anyone have info about the UPS defense?

I think Collins is realistic about his prospects of turning pro:

A Perfect Fit

When Andy Collins '07 went out for high school football, he didn't plan on being a quarterback. A football player since signing up for Grid Kids as a third grader, he was always one of the bigger kids and was used to playing defensive line and tight end.

"The high school team didn't have a quarterback in my class, and the coach asked if I would try it," says Andy, who grew up in Zillah, Washington. "It took a while to get used to the position, but I think it grew on me a little."

Playing quarterback has turned out to be a perfect fit. Named SCIAC Offensive Player of the year for the second time, Andy ranked ninth in NCAA Division III passing efficiency, sixth in total yardage, and directed an offense that scored 39.2 points a game in 2005. With Andy at the helm, the Tigers are currently sporting a 17-game regular season winning streak, which dates back to the second game of the 2004 season.

Before transferring to Occidental, Andy was a Division I football player at the University of Oregon. When his coaches wanted him to shift to defense, he took a year off from sports to consider his future as a student and athlete.  Andy decided he wasn't ready to give up football, and that he wanted to attend a small school in an urban location with a good academic reputation.  He found the right combination at Occidental.

"For the players here, football isn't life," says Andy, a sociology major and kinesiology minor, and a member of the Newman Center and Student Athletic Advisory Committee.  "It's something we all love, but most likely we're going to end up doing something else as a career. I really appreciate the fact that our head coach stresses academics and all the coaches are more than willing to accommodate you if you have a class or lab that runs late."

Andy's football education continues too, both on and off the field. During the season he meets several times a week with the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach. "There is a lot more that goes into being a quarterback than athletic ability. Even at the Division III level, the game is fast and complex. You need to understand the X's and O's, because as a quarterback you're also a coach on the field."

On the other hand, NFL Draft Scout has Collins on its list of Best Prospects By College:

Hey Oxybob, since we accused DGD as being Wabby's dad, it is interesting you have the same "foundness" and knowledge of Collins and his history. Is it possible you are his  dad?

Over on the SCAC board there has been much talk about the 5'11"  freshman QB that will be starting for DePauw this week against Trinity.

Perhaps the Johnny Cash  type name has made him tough enough to overcome the pressure at such a young age. ::)
Fierce When Roused

Sabretooth Tiger

Perhaps Redlands' fans can find some solace in this part of the new Around the Nation - West article in relation to Linfield opening up at 0-2:

Need proof the Wildcats shouldn't panic? In 2001, St. John's opened the season with two losses. Their third loss didn't come until the semifinals of the NCAA playoffs to Mount Union who went on to win the Stagg Bowl.

If the Wildcats can make it back to the semifinals as they did in 2005, Smith will be considered a genius and no one will remember a short two-game skid to open the season.

Hope that  the Tigers, Dawgs and Kingsmen make the most of their off week.

cheers,

Like the man said, give it a rest.
He also said he never meant for this to happen.

Isn't that enough?

It's time to let this go and move on. You people have games to be talking about instead.

Just my two cents.

Agreed, its done.  And I'm sick of hearing about it.

But to tell the truth... no we don't.  Redlands, Oxy, and the Who all have bye's this week
