Congrats to Oxy moving up....wait till next year!!!!! ;)

Man I sound like a Red Sox fan. :D

The CMS Redlands game should be a good one.  I look for stingy defense of the Bulldogs to be the difference. If the offense continues to improve and not turn the ball over the Bulldogs should win this one with home field and homecoming advantages.

ECS...what is your take?

EastCoastStag

Many a thought about CMS v UR. I'll have to take a minute or two to digest them all and I'll get at it. That, and I need to get the Hefeweizen out of my brain as well.

Now, as for being a Cubs fan? As a born and raised New Englander, "wait 'till next year" is a copyrighted and trademarked phrase belonging to the Boston Red Sox. Really, I swear.........

ECS....you're right...I modified my post.  I dont want the Oxy anti-trust lawyers suing me. :D

This is posted on the SCIAC website. Congrats to Tim.

SCIAC Player of the week

Occidental: Tim Tanous, Football
Tim Tanous nabbed a game-changing fourth quarter interception in the Tigers' important 24-10 victory over Redlands Saturday at Ted Runner Field. After Occidental took a 17-10 lead early in the fourth quarter, Redlands answered with a 30-yard kickoff return and a quick first down by quarterback Chris Saras into Oxy territory. Tanous picked off a Saras pass on the next play at the Oxy 43, killing the Redlands drive with 13:10 remaining. Tanous led the Tigers with ten tackles, eight solo, in addition to the interception. Occidental stretched its regular season winning streak to 21 games, a new school record.
Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Congrats to Tim for Sciac AOW. I am sure he would rather say that his teammates helped him get that honor.

Spinoza......ok, thanks for backing me on the announcer thing, he really was annoying, but.......I saw several plays where an PP guy was trying to bury, with a block, a guy that was nowhere near the play.  What was that all about?  I mean 30 yds away.

I also saw, on at least two ocassions, cut blocks down field by PP players.  I dont know who started it but it is wrong and while I didnt see a Bulldog player do it, and I'm not saying they didnt, I just didnt see it, I did see PP players doing it.

There were no wrong tactics by the UR staff, they subbed as early as the beginning of the third quarter. As I recall, the PP td was scored with numerous subs in the game on the Bulldog defense.

The PP running back looked like a freshman in high school.  5'7" and 137lbs????  I think that is what I read.  He was a tough kid, I will grant him that.  If I counted correctly PP had about 30 kids dressed for the game.  Did they have a lot of kids hurt or is that the team?

PP had the misfortune of catching the dawgs on a day where they played like the University of Redlands.

SnowLeopard

Yeah La Verne had an impressive 1st drive, but 5 interceptions and scarce defense against the Tigers didn't help much after that. Congrats to CMS on the win, hopefully the Leos can rally for a win next week at Whittier, but it looks like the Poets gave a good effort to get the win against Chapman.... Might be a good game.

On the whole PP not shaking hands thing...

As someone close to the team, the reasoning behind not shaking hands was as much of a response to the actions of the Redlands players during the game then particular coaching moves/strategies.  The Redlands players repeatedly performed both dirty and dangerous acts such as cutting safties downfield on the side at the knees and taking late, cheap shots at anyone around.  If there is no respect given to PP during the game, then I don't see why PP would have any reason to show Redlands respect after the game.  If they had shook hands and said "good game", it would have been an incredibly empty and false statement.

That being said, whoever mentioned the announcer was also on-point.  It was both strange and incredibly obnoxious.  The "excited" voice should be reserved for long touchdowns or amazing plays and not penalties on Redlands.

Spinoza,

Welcome to post patterns. Nice to see that supporters of other SCIAC schools are showing up. The cut block is a tough thing to not only referee but to defend. When it starts to happen way downfield then that is a problem. I do know that the Redlands coaching staff while I was there was a big proponent of blocking above the belt.

However, good teams are well prepared for it and practice in defense of it. I can't remember how many times we would practice defending the cut block. Get one hand on the shoulder pad and the other on the helmet and drive to the ground. Now pop up and be ready to make the play. I am having flashbacks to Chapman week. They were the kings of the cut block back in the 90's.

No wonder PP does not win many games historically.  The do not know the rules.  If you watch any pro or college game, it is illegal in high school, lineman and receivers are cutting down field.  My coaches in college taught us to cut downfield because most lineman cannot move with a linebacker or safety.  When Chapman ran the wing-t, you would see their lineman pull around on the sweep and cut everyone.  It is part of football.  I was not at the game, but cleaning up around the pile is a normal football activity.  As long as it is within the whistles.  Keep it up Dawgs,  end the season at 5-4.  Who knows, maybe Oxy will slip up.

A cut block on the safety may be the difference between a 6 yard gain and a 60 yard gain.  Cut away!  Learn to defend it...textbook coaching from RFB by the way :)

Congrats to Mr. Tanous........but you really need to do something about the hairdo..........I saw his picture on the SCIAC website. ;)

I think the cut block is legal within a certain distance from the line of scrimmage, it does not have to be performed in such a way as to intend to do injury.

I didnt see any dirty play other than what I mentioned.  The refusal to shake hands flies in the face of the standard of good sportsmanship set forth by the SCIAC and the NCAA.  Shame on the sagehens.

I'm sorry, I guess I should have clarified.  The cut blocks were the receivers blindsiding the DBs at an angle much closer to a block in the back than a legal block.

I'm not trying to take anything away from Redlands; they played very hard and deserved to win.

PP had some kids hurt, but that is pretty much the whole team.

What you're describing is called a crackback block which is legal. The only time it sucks is when you're on the receiving end of it. It's just about as bad as getting earholed. For those that are still playing, just make sure you call it out when the receiver is setting it up. Nothing is worse then getting your fellow DB's or LB's killed.

I thought it was a very clean game other than the few plays that Imentioned in my earlier posts.  I think UR came out with a chip on their shoulder, it was clear that  they had a point to make.  Maybe PP took UR's agressiveness the wrong way.  Just my opinion .

GO DEEP DAWGS   dawg gone it

SnowLeopard

Just to clarify for those who dont know the current rules of cut-blocking.... These were the rules (or how I understood them) in my recent playing days.....

1) It is legal to cut block (blocking below the waist) when you engage head up with a defender...
2) It is legal to crack block ( Or for a reciever to run and block a defender inside the box.....)

3) It is not legal to combine the two ( Crack-Cut blocking is dangerous (ACL's) and is not and should not be a part of football.

IMO a player who has the oppurtunity to crack block and blindside a linebacker and tries to cut them instead is a wuss..... and shouldn't be on the field anyway.
