Wow. That's crazy that they haven't had both trophies at pomona for their 4 years.

I remember old Oxy players telling me that they never saw the drum or shoes back in the late 90's. It just shows you how all can change.

Tigersports----I think you add a little Hen, a spice of stag, some Pio and the other one (oh wait that's against all Peta regulations)...shame on you sports, shame on you.

Accidental Boob is right, I have only seen Collins play once and have not seen many SCIAC games...SO WHAT.  Why do you htink the SCIAC  is any different from any other football conference?

You take the best player in the league, a QB yet, off a team and that team is going change.  Now, Goltz may be a very good QB but you guys have put Collins up on a pedestal.  Im not saying he isnt every bit as good as you say he is.  AND that proves my point even more, Oxy will not be the same without him.  USC lost Leinert, Booty was one of the top rated prospects if noo the top Qb in his class, do they miss Leinert, Dwaye Jarret sure does.

Your being unrealistic if you think Oxy will be just as good without him.  At least until such time as Goltz proves what he can do, especially in a big game, and, I think they will all be big games next year in the SCIAC.

So  Boob, I concede you know much more about the SCIAC and it's history than I, but I forgot more about the game of football since I started typing this post than you have ever known,( except for what you learned on Madden 06.) :)

Remember, take everything on this stupid message board with a grain of salt!  Isnt that what you told me? ;)

I don't think any of us (except those recent Oxy alums) has seen enough of Goltz to really have a true idea as to how he will perform.  If he is the starter next year, he will have had 2 years in the system which can only benefit him and the team.

If Oxy wins out, and 3-peats, I am sure that the talent pool will get better and better in Eagle Rock.

I wanted to make it out to homecoming this weekend, but my cousin is graduating from Navy boot camp in Chicago, so that is my first priority...Here's hoping my first "live" Oxy game of the year will be here in the midwest at...UW-Whitewater?

I'm sorry, I guess I should have clarified.  The cut blocks were the receivers blindsiding the DBs at an angle much closer to a block in the back than a legal block.

I'm not trying to take anything away from Redlands; they played very hard and deserved to win.

PP had some kids hurt, but that is pretty much the whole team.

What you're describing is called a crackback block which is legal. The only time it sucks is when you're on the receiving end of it. It's just about as bad as getting earholed. For those that are still playing, just make sure you call it out when the receiver is setting it up. Nothing is worse then getting your fellow DB's or LB's killed.

Crackbacks (essentially blocking a pursuer moving laterally) are legal above the waist, illegal below, at least in the NFL.  Chop blocks (player engaged high and hit low) are always illegal.

Oxy will likely come back to the pack next year (i.e., 2/3 of their games won't be decided at halftime) to leave the race truly up in the air without Collins, who is a once-in-a-generation guy at this level.  To say they'll struggle is a bit of a stretch since they haven't lost in California with Collins as the starter and have rarely been challenged, emphasizing the point that Collins gives them wide separation from the pack but they still have to have a lot of talent to achieve that.  Bottom line is that they're still flush with talent on both sides of the ball, which should make things interesting next year.

tiger...finally a man of reason.   Oxy , or any team for that matter would not be the same minus Collins.  That isnt saying they dont have alot of returning talent either, just that they will not be the same without Collins.

I would say the same about UR if played for them.

The SCIAC, as well as D3 football, is different because it has teams that don't get day to day national coverage and has a strong following of people who keep up with their favorite teams/alma matta/and the playoff picture from year to year.. and I had thought we'd covered your minimal (yet continually growing) knowledge of the conference earlier.  Seems like you come off awfully high and mighty for being the newbie guy.

Very true.  USC is still undefeated - with a few close calls.  ;)  The SCIAC title next year will definietly be up for grabs with Collins out of the picture, but I don't believe the drop off will be as drammatic as some make it sound.

Edit::  And I agree with Tigersports that games won't be decided at the half and Oxy will have to close out games.  That doesn't make them middle of the pack after coming off two championship seasons (plus how we finish out this year).

Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

I get some of the points you both are trying to mention. I understand that Collins added a little extra with his arm and his feet. But this was the same comment a lot of people said about Tyler Paopao as he was leaving the program. I am sure even you (sports thought about this at the time). To get to the point, what if  behind Goltz  and the build up of tiger football, another surprise Q.b. joins the program and turns up big???? Isn't that how oxy got Collins in the 1st place????

A surprise quarterback can show up anywhere.

The D3 equivalent to the Oxy situation is Linfield in 2005 vs 2006.

True...just look at NWC offensive player of the week for the past three weeks:  NWC players of the week.  You never know how a kid is going to react once they get their shot.

Just wanted to take a moment to give a shout out to the Oxy defense! By the looks of it they are getting better and better as a unit as this season goes on.  They way the offense is scoring points this year, "ranked 3rd in all of DIII land" and the way the "Darkside" is stepping up, look out everyone remaining on the Oxy schedule.  Im looking forward to Homecoming this weekend, and what should be the biggest lopsided victory of the season for Oxy, maybe a 49 pt. spread?  But what I look forward to the most is the return of a recent Oxy grad/footballer who is now coaching at Pomona! Those of you who are familiar with Patterson Field, you know the away team is on the sidelines right in front of the stands.  Anyone with any good ideas, share them, as Im sure we will have lots of fun with this!

Tom Brady

I realize I will get blasted for this but what the hell ;D

Does anyone out there feel like Cal Lu has any shot at beating OXY at home?  I know they (CLU) are a much different team on the road but they play pretty good at home.  Just wondering what EVERYONE, not just OXY fans think.

After each Oxy score you might want to remind Pomona to watch out for the onside kick.
The Io Triumphe yell should be a hint to jog their memory. ;)

I thought this board was one where you could express an opinion on football and then entertain some intelligent discussion, with a certain amount of jabs thrown in for fun.  I didnt realize that every time I expressed an opinion(like Oxy wont be as good without Collins and that I think the SCIAC will be interesting next year), that I would be personally attacked.  I have fairly thick skin and can give it as well as take it, but I am really tired of the personal attacks, Bob.  Here is the latests example......

Look, Oswald, you're arguing with overheated, over-the-top, over-involved LittleLeague/PopWarner/HighSchoolSports dad. The good news: dawg's rooting interest for Redlands began with his kid's enrollment and will end when his kid graduates. The bad news: That means after this season there will still be three more years of his constant BS.

OxyBob

Agree that we disagree on a point but why such animosity toward me?   On one hand you think your funny, then on the other you say, and I quote from your email.....

Walt:

Stop taking everything I say seriously. It's just a dumb sports message
board.

Bob

Good natured humor I understand....your vicious attacks on me I dont.  If something in your life makes you so miserable that you need an outlet to rant and rave like you do on this board, maybe you should invest the time and energy that you put into your google searches and correct the problem.

So either take a pill or grow up.  Ive already invested my time and energy into my family maybe that would be a good direction for you to take. No response is required or desired.

Haha love the idea OxyBob! Although I might not want to rile up these Hens, one minute their not shaking hands and the next minute they could be swinging helmets and stomping on our kickers head, who knows!

As for you Mr. Brady, I think this will definitley be a good callenge for Oxy.  I really believe that Cal Who is going to come out and try to make a statement.  They believe they have had a quality team the last couple of years, but their losses to Oxy is what has kept them from the playoffs.  Unless they want to keep saying "this is our year" year after year, they need to step up and win the big game, or at least make it competitive. The last few years they said the played Oxy too early in the season and maybe werent ready for that type of game, well now they are playing later on in the season and they have played two quality NWC teams.  Also, like it was in '02 the weather could be a factor.  Who knows, rain could be a factor.  Although if that were the case and it turned into a running match, I'll take Collins and Manderson anyday!
