Cal Lu is definitely has the capability if they bring their A game.......
The "blackhole" cant count on Danny jones handing 5 interceptions to them like LV did...
Colorado did put up 34 points on the Tigers. Hopefully we'll see a shootout.

This is all pending on which Cal Lu team shows up ( last year..... 41-9)
Hail to the Orange, Hail to the Green,
Hail to the Leos, FIGHT ULV!!!

The latest news from Oxy:

Occidental improves record to 5-0

Occidental hasn't had problems scoring points this season.  The Tigers rank 4th in scoring in NCAA Division III (40.8 ppg), 15th in total offense (427 ypg) and 16th in passing (274).
Still, the Tigers got some help Saturday at La Verne, turning a fumble and three interceptions into 28 Occidental points and a 49-14 SCIAC win.  The Tigers jumped two spots to #9 in the latest D3Football.com national poll and extended their school-record regular-season winning streak to 22 games.  Occidental improved to 5-0, 3-0 in SCIAC play.
Occidental picked off quarterbacks Troy Doolittle and Steven Martinez five times in the game.  La Verne drove 73 yards in 15 plays on the opening possession and picked up a first down via an Oxy pass interference penalty on its next drive moments later.  Jeremy Gruber's '07 forced fumble on the next play gave Oxy a first and ten at the La Verne 16 and Matt Andersen '08 found the end zone three plays later to tie the score at 7-7.
Anthony Ostland '08 intercepted Doolittle on the next La Verne series and the Tigers cashed in with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Andy Collins '07 to Mike Winchell '07 with 3:09 remaining in the 1st quarter.
The Tigers snagged interceptions on four consecutive La Verne possessions in the second half, the first coming on another Ostland pick five minutes into the first quarter.  Matt Williams '10 20-yard interception return set up a seven-yard touchdown pass to Rocky Ciasulli '08 with 6:08 remaining in the third.
Gruber intercepted Martinez moments later and Jay Arthur '10 returned a 22-yard pick for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.  The Leopards kept mostly to the ground on their last three drives, managing a 13-play, 69 yard scoring drive midway through the fourth to the provide the final margin.
The Tigers offensive stats weren't anything spectacular.  In fact, La Verne held a slim advantage in total offense (352-306) and out-rushed Occidental 165-59.  Collins completed 21 of 28 passes for 242 yards and five touchdowns, the fourth five-touchdown game of his career.  Ciasulli caught seven passes for 96 yards and Jordan Inabnit '10 made five catches for 80 yards.
The Tiger's offensive line, led by Chris Kyles '08, Garrett Hostetler '08, and Sam Emerson '09, provided Collins with excellent pass protection.
The Tigers put together three scoring drives without the benefit of a turnover, capped by touchdown passes of seven yards to Andersen and 30 and 11 yards to Inabnit. Andersen ranks 5th in NCAA Division III in scoring (12.0ppg).
"It was a solid game for us," summed up veteran head coach Dale Widolff.  "We didn't play as well as we could have but we're getting better week to week.  Andy Collins did a good job of taking advantage of what the opposition gave us.  It was an efficient game for the offense."
Gruber, along with Joe Zackary '07, led the Tigers' defense with 6 ½ tackles.  Ostland recorded 5 ½ tackles and three pass breakups in addition to the two interceptions.  Five freshmen contributed three or more stops, including Patrick Sarkissian, who added five and Alex Wertheimer, who collected his third sack of the season.  Alex Groh '10 and Scott Saunders '10 landed three punts inside the La Verne 20.
The 108th meeting between Occidental and Pomona-Pitzer, one of the oldest college football rivalries west of the Mississippi river, takes place this weekend at Homecoming.  The Tigers hold a 59-46-2 advantage in the all-time series and won last year's meeting 41-34, retaining possession of "the Drum", the 65-year old game trophy.   Pomona-Pitzer (2-3, 1-2 SCIAC) lost to Redlands 46-14 last week.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm.

From the West Around the Region out today:

And the kicker is ...
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps kicker Zach Mallove hasn't exactly had a great season. He entered Saturday's game with a kicking resume that would keep him off most Pop Warner teams. He missed a 23-yard field goal against Puget Sound, had a 23-yard and 42-yard attempt blocked against Occidental, missed one from 48 yards against Chapman and had his attempted game winner of 31 yards blocked versus Cal Lutheran on Saturday. However, in overtime he put those five futile attempts behind him and kicked a 42-yard game winner and sent Cal Lutheran to its first loss in their last 11 games.

"It was a real big chance to pull through in the clutch, and I feel a lot better now," Mallove told the Ventura County Star. "That was just a huge weight off my back."

A nice blurb about Linfield's qb situation as well, it's worth a read, though the focus is mostly on the eastern part of the west region.

D O.C.

We must understand most of the schools in the division are way back there.

Tom Brady

Bob-  I think Cal Lu had that date in their mind and forgot about Oct. 14th, 2006.  I am shocked to see you say it could be a good game......are we seeing a different side of Bob ??? ;)

EODT-  Since when did I become Mr. Brady?

I just hope its a good game and of course I hope CLU wins to make up for their game last week.  Maybe that was a pretty good wake up call.  20 out of 22 is good but it doesnt send them anywhere for the playoffs....

OXY Oswald

Tom -

I think it's going to be a great game - I don't expect a repeat of last year.  Oxy's defense will have to show up in a big way to stop a high powered offense driven by Jones.  Oxy's offense is going to have to have extended drives that are capped with points in order to give the D time to rest and make adjustments to what the Kingsmen are coming at them with.

I think a lot of questions will be answered when we see which Cal Lu team shows up this week against Chapman, who are currently reeling from a loss to our poetically powerful pals in Whittier.
Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Sabretooth Tiger

Given that Cal Lu's sole shot at the playoffs is winning out and taking the SCIAC championship (and I don't know whether that's possible if Oxy and Cal Lu finish w/ 1 loss each) I have to think that the Kingsmen will be a particularly dangerous opponent on the 28th.  They'll have nothing to lose and everything to gain on their home field . . . it will be a challenge for the Tigers.

dawg gone it

Here are the newbie's predictions, the guy who knows nothing about the SCIAC:

Oxy over PP by 30, or more

CLU over Chapman by 10, this is a tough one to predict, how does Chapman lose to Whitt and beat UR?....is CLU not as good as advertised or did they get caught looking ahead?

LV over Whittier by 12, LV bounces back and the Poets come back to earth

UR over CMS by 14,  the stingy defense and improving offense will be difficult to overcome on homcoming Saturday.

Ohio St by a ton over Indiana.......Go Bucks.  Yeah, I've got tickets for the National Championship game, assuming the Bucks beat Michigan.

GO DEEP DAWGS....GO DEEP (again)  dawg gone it

For any of you newbies that want to get updated on how the SCIAC has looked for Oxy from 1996 to 2006.

Winning ways are the norm
Occidental still tops in SCIAC

While USC's various records within the Pacific-10 Conference have been discussed ad nauseam, another team in Southern California deserves credit for its absolute dominance over its conference.

At Occidental College, nothing less than a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship is acceptable.

With their 49-14 road win over the University of La Verne on Saturday, Oxy improved its SCIAC winning streak to 16 games and has a 22-game winning streak in the , a school record.

regular season Since 2001, Occidental is an astounding 25-6 in conference play and the Tigers haven't lost a SCIAC contest in the last three years. Their last loss came at home to Redlands on Oct. 11, 2003, when they lost 18-14.

Leading the way has been back-to-back SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year and senior quarterback Andy Collins, who became a starter in 2004. He threw for 242 yards and five touchdowns in the Oxy's win over the Leopards on Saturday.

For his career, Collins is 500for777 for 6,540 yards and 70 touchdowns. Over his three-plus years, he's thrown just 23 interceptions, making his TD-to-interception ratio just over 3-1.

Things weren't always this good for Occidental,
though. From 1996-2000, the Tigers were 6-19. It should give some hope to the bottom-tier teams in the conference like Whittier and La Verne, which have struggled to stay competitive.
In fact, Redlands seems to be the only school to remain at or near the top every year over the last decade.

Oxy over "my hen and mash potato dinner" by 40 + plus.

The coaching staff at Pomona is to young and fresh to compete against the old school masterminds behind Oxy's O-D.

Whitter over ULV. Poets come in confident after beating a chapman team. The same team that some how beat the pups.

Cal Lu over who ever they play.

Redlands????? Not to sure. The return to confusion haunts  again. I guess its not a good time in October for them.

Tooth,

Old wise one. Oxy's Athletic department will honor Oxy's 1955 Championship team. Will you be showing up with your leather helmet and O2 tank????(Just kidding by the way. :D

Ah Brownie . . . I remind you that "old age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time."

Sorry, the O2 and leather helmet will remain on the shelf as I have family commitments that conflict with homecoming.  I'm storing up my "husband" points to be used at a later date . . . a playoff trip perhaps?

BTW, I sent you a pm.

Browneagle64

Hahaha, you're right tooth. Can't argue with that saying.

Here's to hoping that Later on in the season, THe Rock hold's the first playoff game against SCIAC #1 against NWC #1 or what ever.

DGI,
I'll get around to that breakdown/prediction for you. Actually looking forward to it. Trying to move to SF at the moment and it is pretty hectic. As for being at the game, it is at 1pm correct? 80% chance I make it. I'll drop you a message if I do make it.

Other predictions:
PP v Oxy: PP still does not know the rules of football. Complains to refs that the Oline of Oxy is engaging in this mysterious "blocking" activity and that the ball carriers do not stop when touched with two hands. PP QB wonders why he cannot wear his red jersey. Collins throws for his first left-handed TD of the year and runs a TD in backwards with his eyes closed. Oxy by 35+ (56-17)
ULV v WC: Poets confidence outperforms Leos desire for a rebound. Poets in a close one, win by less than 10 (24-17)
CLU v Chapman: A pissed off CLU rolls over Chapman. Chapmen spends the week watching reruns of the UM/FIU fight. Attempt to pick a fight with CLU players, but fail and have a bench clearing brawl with themselves. CLU wins by 21+ (35-10)

Note: Sagehen does not taste very good no matter how you cook it. Has a flavour kinda like organic/hemp/unwashed dirty laundry.. be careful.. may have to pick out a few unshaved hairs here and there.. as well as some hemp necklaces and birkenstock sandels. Tastes the best when shot with a handcrafted american made firearm... preferably a Smith & Wesson or a Colt.

Now as for CLU the rest of the way. Not trying to start a debate with OXY people as there is still the CLU UR game to go. However, after watching them in person, they are a solid team that plays well. Certainly no slouch. Should they beat UR in a sound manner, I would expect them to give OXY a game. That being said, UR will be huge for CLU. UR will relish playing the spoiler and will be barking for the win. A wounded animal is a dangerous animal. Expect that to be close..... which might tire out CLU for OXY.
For CLU to beat OXY, they will have to be perfect in every aspect of the game and need OXY to slip up. Not making a prediction as of yet. However, as CMS proved last week, there is a reason games are played on the field. As Tooth pointed out, CLU has absolutely nothing to lose. Whether OXY wants it or not.. or even if they thrive on it or not, the pressure will be huge... HUGE in that game if CLU comes in with only the CMS loss. I'd love to watch that one if I could.
