Sabretooth Tiger

You mean Oxy hasn't arranged for a three hour total solar eclipse along with a temporary loan of the Patterson Field lights?   ;D

Tooth-

I also heard the Oxy science department was working on it (in a joint effort with conference member CalTech) - they just need to narrow the effect of the eclipse down to the northernmost sector of Thousand Oaks. ;)

Just the mention of the Patterson field lights strikes fear in the hearts of many a CLU booster ;D

Tigers Keep "The Drum" 38-23
Los Angeles (October 23, 2006)

Ninth-ranked Occidental (6-0, 4-0 SCIAC) scored 31 first-half points and cruised to a 38-23 Homecoming win over Pomona-Pitzer Saturday afternoon at Patterson Field.

The Tigers retain possession of "The Drum", the 65-year old game trophy, and now hold a 58-48-3 all-time series lead in 109 meetings between the two teams.

Occidental honored the SCIAC championship football teams of the 1940's and 50's, as well as the 1982 national championship women's tennis team, at halftime and continued to make history of its own, extending its school record regular-season winning streak to 23 games.

With history in perspective, the Tigers now move toward this weekend's showdown with Cal Lutheran (5-1, 2-1 SCIAC), a game that will help define their season.

"Cal Lutheran will be the best team we've seen this year," says veteran head coach Dale Widolff .  "They're a balanced team...they run well, they pass well, have a strong kicking game, and play excellent defense .  The winner of this game has a great chance to represent the SCIAC in the NCAA playoffs."

Saturday's game will feature two outstanding quarterbacks, Occidental's Andy Collins and Cal Lutheran's Danny Jones.  Collins, a D3Football.com First Team Pre-Season All-American and two-time SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year, ranks seventh in NCAA Division III passing efficiency (174.6) and leads the nations' third-ranked offense (42.4 ppg).  Collins' ability to run, throw, and throw on the run, makes him a triple threat for opposing defenses.

Jones earned SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors Oct. 4 after a seven-touchdown performance in the Kingsmen's 55-12 win over La Verne.  He ranks 17th in passing efficiency and has led Cal Lutheran to 18 victories in the last 20 contests, dating back to 2004.  The Kingsmen rebounded from a 30-27 double overtime loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with a 34-14 win over Chapman last weekend.

Collins completed 20 of 29 attempts for 231 yards and four touchdowns Saturday, tossing a 32-yard touchdown to Mike Winchell '07 on the Tigers' opening possession.  Occidental mounted a seven-play, 75-yard drive on the next series, helped by a roughing the kicker penalty on its own 38 yard line.

Matt Andersen rushed 33 yards to set up a 1st and goal moments later and capped the drive with a nine-yard touchdown scamper to make the score 14-0 with five minutes left in the first quarter.

Andersen rushed 14 times for 118 yards, his third 100-yard game of the season, and also caught four passes for 30 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter.  Winchell led the Tiger receivers with five catches for 72 yards.  Jordan Inabnit '10 hauled in five passes for 55 yards and caught his sixth touchdown of the season, a 28-yarder, with 2 ½ minutes left in the first half.

Thomas Joraanstad '07 slipped a 47-yard field goal inside the left upright in the final seconds to make the score 31-7 at halftime.

"That gives us confidence that he can hit a big one in a pressure situation for us," offered Widolff.  Joraanstad is two for two in field goal attempts and 33 of 34 in PAT's so far this season.

Bo Renaud '08 caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from Collins late in the third quarter.  Sagehen quarterback Cody Peterson tossed two touchdowns in the fourth to provide the final margin.  The Occidental offensive line paved the way for 201 yards rushing and allowed one sack.

For the second straight week, the Occidental defense snagged five interceptions, three by Daniel Tromello '08.  Tromello's 20-yard interception return on Pomona-Pitzer's opening possession set up the Tigers' first score and his third-quarter fumble recovery killed the Sagehens' scoring chances at the Oxy 19.

Anthony Ostland '08 and Kyle Stowers '07 also recorded interceptions.  Tromello led the Tiger tacklers with 5 ½ stops.  The Tiger defense gave up just seven points through three quarters for the third time this season.

Cal Lutheran lost to Occidental 41-9 last year at Patterson Field and fell 24-7 in Thousand Oaks in 2004.  The Kingsmen's 6-0 double overtime victory over the Tigers in 2002 was played in a rainstorm.  Game time for this weekend is 1pm at Mt. Clef Stadium.
Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Scandii- I just talked to one of my old Physics prof's and he mentioned that the only eclipse Cal Lu will see on saturday will either be from an Oxy O-linemen or D-line men standing over and looking down on helpless Cal Lu players. Unfortunately, Cal Tech couldn't brew up another Rainstorm like in 02 to give the kingsmen a chance. (Just kidding)

In honor of Bob's usual impeccable research I will revise my previous post to read "fumble going in from the one that would have at least gotten the Kingsmen into double figures, two drive killing interceptions in Oxy territory, and a few key penalties at inopportune moments."

Thank you Bob, for the opportunity to come clean, end my state of denial, and accept the full pain of that defeat. ;) :D ;D

dawg gone it

scandi.....google me this batman.......dont feel bad...your not the first nor will you be the last. ;) ;) :D ::)

Scandii---Since you  have been a Cal Lu faithful since the 70's, what's your take on this years team. What do you think it will take out of the kingsmen to play a great game against a high top ranked team in Oxy? Do you think Jones can stay awake and not fall asleep like his team did last year???? (Just trying to hear your opinions and take on this big game. Not intending to start a piss match, btw.... ;D)

Looks like it's going to be a warm and sunny day for the Tigers v. Kingsmen match-up this Saturday.  Maybe we could have some of the Santa Ynez vintners (especially Oxy's own Byran Babcock) come down for the pre and post tailgating wine tasting . . .  8) 8)

Or, I guess that a few cold frosties won't be so bad . . . at least we're in a conference that doesn't rely on Hamm's as the refereshing adult beverage of choice . . . .  ;) :D ;D 8)

Ditto that about the Hamms, tooth.

We won't be in Sunriver over Christmas, as we have another offspring coming home from a couple thousand miles to the west, and Mac will be cold enough for her.
You'll have a great time up there, though.

BE-

Good question, and my response may be simplistic but I think the Kingsmen need to play consistent football and swing the big plays in their favor.  That's tough to do against someone like Collins, who is a big play waiting to happen on every down, but I think it's key.  If they can make a couple of big plays on each side of the ball, and limit Oxy's big plays it should make for a great game.

Of course there is always the hope that several key Oxy players will have allergic reactions to:
a) the sunshine
b) the clean air
or
c) the nautral grass  ;)

Unfortunately this is unlikely given Oxy's success under similar circumstances so far this season, but a guy can always hope. :D

Eye of da TIGER

You can always hope Scandi! I think that Cal Who is going to have to hope/create turnovers to make this a game as well as not turnover the ball themselves.  If they fail to create turnovers, keeping the Oxy O off of the field and creating short fields for their own Offense, I think Oxy wins by 2-3 scores.  Oxy's D has created like 10 interceptions in the last two games, if Danny Jones is going to be airing it out on Saturday, this will be a great test for the Oxy DB's.  Definitely looking forward to a great football game this weekend, but I wouldnt be upset by another monkey stomping by Oxy, as our NWC buddies affectionately put it!  ;D
4 is the smallest composite number, its proper divisors being 1 and 2. 4 is the smallest squared prime. 4 is the only number in the English language for which the number of letters in its name is equal to the number itself. 4 is also the number of titles in a row the tigers will have in '07!! Go Oxy

SCIAC guys,

I'm looking forward to the results and hearing about the big game in your conference between Oxy and CLU this weekend. Big playoff ramifications for both teams. Just wanted to say it's good to see all the discussion on your board this season. The last couple of years it's been pretty slow going, but this year you guys have really seemed to pick it up, with a number of different posters contributing. There's only two West coast DIII conferences, and it's nice to see you guys supporting your teams.
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

To the best of my memory MonkeyStomp has been codified by  the Libertarians of the Liberty League and used liberally by the MIAC. The NWC has but mastered the sound effects.

CRZK

My question for Cal Lu looking at the stats is where are your receivers?  Clark must hit a lot of different ones because, unless I am mistaken, none of them show up on the leaders section of SCIAC stats.

Anyway nice post scandi but too many IF's.  Kinda like when oxy played Linfield,  well if we limit Elliots big plays then we can hang in there.  Oxy's D as has been noted has made a lot of picks lately, look for a lot of pressure on Clark.  Oxy by 3 TD's, closer if the starters go out in the 3rd qtr like last week.

UR and LaVerne.  I like the post of Maynards comments, got to admire a guy who always puts a postive spin on things.  UR still has trouble holding on to the football but should be too much for LaVerne.  UR by 14.  By the way does Forman wear a helmet?  A 2nd broken nose?

CMS-Whit..Sorry ECS who cares.  CMS wins but ??

PP and Chapman.  Ditto above.  PP should get the win though.

Game I would like to see.  Besides Oxy I think the Col College vs Puget Sound could be interesting.  CC has improved a lot this year.  They can put up some offense.  Think of the west coast matchups this week, this game should be the most fun.  Out on a limb, CC in a sqeaker upset.
