I spent my day by driving from Dallas to Belton and watching the Whitewater / UMHB game (in case the SCIAC champ ends up playing either or both somewhere in the playoffs). ;)

These are two fine teams properly ranked by the D3 poll.   Both teams have excellent offenses,  but this was truly a great defensive showing by both teams.  The Whitewater team was outstanding in pressuring and sacking the UMHB quarterback.  Collins and his O Line will have their work cut out for them if they should meet.  An interesting aspect was that the UMHB punter was honored at haltime for his punting last year.  This must have inspired the UWW punter because he outpunted  him all day long.

Bonus:  I got to meet Pat and Keith in person. 8)

Tigers Edge Cal Lutheran 28-27

(October 29, 2006)

Occidental mounted an impressive comeback to win its 24th consecutive regular-season game Saturday, edging Cal Lutheran 28-27 at Mount Clef Stadium in Thousand Oaks.   The victory improves the Tigers to 7-0, 5-0 SCIAC, and clears the way for the programs' third consecutive SCIAC championship.

Cal Lutheran led 21-0 after a seven-yard touchdown run by Jesse Matlock with 4:44 remaining in the first half.  Occidental switched to a no-huddle offense on the next possession and mounted a nine-play, 71-yard drive, capped by a three-yard touchdown scamper by Matt Andersen '08.  Cal Lutheran's Connor Pearce kicked a 20-yard field goal moments later to make the score 24-7 at halftime.

Occidental then scored on three straight possessions in the second half beginning with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Andy Collins '07 to Chris Washington '10 just two minutes and 56 seconds into the third quarter.  Pearce nailed a 38-yard field goal to stretch the Kingsmen lead to 27-14 moments later but the Tigers answered with an eight-play, 65-yard drive and a four-yard touchdown pass to Washington with 5:39 remaining in the third.

Trailing 27-21, Occidental got a key interception from defensive lineman Robert Theofanis '07, wiping out a 13-play, 67-yard Kingsmen drive.  The Tigers took possession at their own 16-yard line and marched the length of the field, scoring on a one-yard touchdown run by Andersen with 12:28 remaining.

Anthony Ostland '08 sacked Danny Jones on 3rd and 17 to stall the next Cal Lutheran possession at the Oxy 46.  Pearce missed a 59-yard field goal attempt as time expired.

Collins completed 21 of 31 attempts for 236 yards with two touchdowns and rushed 27 times for a season-high 105 yards.  Jones went 20 of 36 for 279 yards and two touchdowns but tossed the critical interception.  Cal Lutheran out-gained Occidental 560 to 377 and out-rushed the Tigers 281-141.

Kyle Stowers '06 led the Tiger defense with seven stops and two pass breakups.  Jeremy Gruber '07 and Joe Zackary '07 added 6 ½ tackles apiece.  Alex Groh '10 launched a 62-yard punt after the Tigers' first possession and booted a 52-yarder late in the first half to lengthen the field for the Oxy defense.

The Tigers take a break from SCIAC play next weekend and travel to Orange, Calif. for a 7pm date with Chapman University.  Chapman (2-4), which lost to Cal Lutheran 34-14 Oct. 21, plays Pomona-Pitzer Saturday night at Wilson Field.

I feel obliged to comment that the passage re Jones:  " . . . but tossed the critical interception" is, in my view, unfair to Jones who did a hell of a job.  The article fails to mention that the intercepted pass was tipped, at least it sure looked that way to me.  And the field goal "miss" from 59 . . . it was straight and true and just barely short, many Oxy sphincters were puckered (I'd wager, no personal knowledge save for my own, which was totally puckered) . . .

Those stats show just what character the Tiger team had to pull out this win . . . and how much work they have ahead of them in order to make a run deep into the playoffs.

Oh Bob...congrats on your great come from behind win...but...untracted just isnt a wrod..and it if were..un .......means opposite.....so instead of on track...it would mean...off track, which sounds like the Tigers were in the frist half....they got...on track in the second with a guttsy performance....
I am sure they were told that their performance was...unacceptable.... in the first half and from the sounds of it they were...... undeterred ......by it in the second.  They were...... unafraid .......of the ........unattractive.......consequences of a loss.  It would have been ......unbearable ......to be tied with UR if they lost and ruined their....... unblemished.......... record.

Congrats on a great win...good luck in the playoffs.

Now Im going to have an un-beer.

Gray Fox,

Thanks for flagging me down as I was sprinting past you. Pleasure meeting you. :)

It is too bad the rest of NCAA Division III cannot get to see OXYCollins at work.

DGD,

I know that "untracked" would seem to be an...Oxymoron...but...Do a Yahoo! or Google search of "get untracked"  I have heard the phrase used before, and I believe that OxyBob is correct.

"Rams offense was slow to get untracked"

"Willsie Helps Caps Get Untracked"

"Aeros still unable to get untracked"

Among others...

The rest of the country may not care, but damn it's been a beautiful week here in St. Louis!  Look for me at the parade this afternoon!

Untracked is definitely used but it's more a bastardization of "on track" -- like people who type "should of" instead of "should've."

Googled "dictionary untracked."

No dictionary definition supports its use in the context originally set forth above by OB.  However, OB appears to be correct as to use in sporting events by sportscasters, so Pat and OB are correct.  Here's a direct response from the 8th google listing:

Dear Sars --

Since you seem to be A) a sports fan and B) a grammar maven, I think that you any only you might be able to help me out.

Okay. Here's the deal. For a few years now, I've noticed sports announcers and sportswriters talking about how a player needs to get "untracked," meaning "back to his usual level of excellence." I had assumed for years that they were saying "on track," but, no. "Untracked."

And it's not just announcers; I've seen it in print.

The problem is that dictionary.com gives the following definition of "untracked," and ONLY the following definition of "untracked":

untracked

adj : lacking pathways; "trackless wilderness"; "roadless areas"

Is there something I'm missing? Is there something the dictionary is missing? And why has "untracked" become so widespread as to be used ubiquitously in the world of sports? Shouldn't players who are slumping hope to get "on track" instead of "untracked?" Can everybody be wrong? Scarier yet: can everybody be wrong, and I be right?

Thanks for clarifying,
I Think I'm the Only Person Who Digs Bill Walton

Dear Only,

I think that sports commentators intend "untracked" to mean "out of a rut or slump," so it might be more instructive to look up "tracked" or "track" and see if flipping part of that definition to its antonym makes more sense. Let's see here...

Well, if you use the meaning "moving along a rail," I think it makes sense; the implication is of breaking out of or away from that, but of course you can't say "derailed," the usual word to apply here, because it has a negative connotation. So, you go with "untracked."

But the guys in the booth are not necessarily grammarians, so I wouldn't read too much into it in the first place.

Wow, I clearly need to find something better to occupy my time on this first Sunday morning of Standard Time . . .

And congratulations to the Oxy Men's Cross Country team that won the SCIAC championship yesterday.

Back to football, the QOW index has been updated.  Oxy is 16th nationally with a rating of 10.714.  This is well ahead of Whitworth at 42nd (9.429) . . . side note, Linfield is way ahead of Whitworth in the QOW rankings at 26th 10.200 and undefeated and unranked St. Norbert is 11th with 11.000.

Not sure what all of it means except that I have to muse over whether a Linfield victory over the 'Rats this coming weekend will knock the 'Rats out of contention for a Pool B bid and improve Oxy's chances to host a round 1 playoff game provided that the Tigers remain undefeated.

I would say the Oxy defense ....derailed ....the CLU offense in the second half.   Can we agree on that?

Unfortunatly.....you just play by your own grammar rules....and you opinion is unimportant.....and your arrogance is unbearable.........

Congrats on a great win...enjoy it while you have AC.....it all ends this year.

Au contraire...

Dictionary.com:"untracked"

But as you will note, that is the "informal" use, consistent with previous discussion.  Excellent find on Simers, I love it when we get column space in the Times.   It's clear that I have to start wandering out front to get the paper a little earlier.

While the Tigers lose Andy to graduation, I think it's a little early to know what next year will hold.  Of course, the early favorite has to be Cal Lu where presumably junior QB Danny Jones will be coming back for his senior year.  The kid is good.

Redlands and Oxy have Goltz and Wabby sitting in the wings (among others) and a full recruiting season to get through . . . so for now, I think I'll enjoy the rest of the ride this fall, change focus to hoops at the appropriate time, survive the summer w/ a bit of surfing (maybe I'll see DOC at "Old Man's" or "Church") and then we can start the '07-'08 chirping.

Me, I'm the optimist, I'm looking forward to a Tiger run in the playoffs that includes a home opener and another "w" in the SCIAC playoff win column!

To that end . . . GO 'CATS, BEAT THE 'RATS this weekend!  I have to think that Linfield will step it up and handle Whitworth when it's all on the line.

And one last thought DGI . . . there is no big contingency fee in the waiting for any victory over OB, so let economic reason be your guide  ;) ;D.

My use of the word untracked was correct, informal or not. Heck, according to the following articles, even the stuffy New York Times uses the word untracked. 'Nuff said.
OxyBob

Dude, read my posts . . . I never accused you of not being correct, merely pointing out that you're using terminology that is in the early stages of grammatical evolutionary use (crawling out of the primordial dictionary ooze).  Indeed, I think my comments suggested that in the context used, that you are indeed consistent with the developing use.  I merely provided a framework so that individuals with different points of view could see the bigger picture and thereby develop a mutual respect and understanding for each others' paradigm.

tooth.....thanks for the mediation type advise.... ;)

I post in jest......not anger or any other motivation...cant say the same about your buddy.

and ...thanks for the compliment about Matt....I am sure the replacement Oxy QB is good.....it will be hard to replace a qb that performed like AC did in the second half of the game yesterday.   The SCIAC will be much more balanced next year between Oxy,CLU and UR...

The dawgs are returning alot of players from both sides of the ball....next year will be fun.

Try collecting one third of that! ;) :D
