Pat:

You first wrote:  And you don't think winning at Linfield merits moving up? Isn't Linfield a far better team than anyone Occidental has faced?

You then later wrote:  Occidental cleans up against teams that aren't in the same class, though. What is Oxy proving, that it's better than Cal Lutheran and La Verne and Colorado College? We all knew that already. We're taking a leap of faith that Oxy is much better than that by having them in the Top 15 at all.

Linfield, with a loss to a D-II scholarship program and two Top 10 teams, is much better than anyone on Occidental's schedule. Whitworth proved more in 60 minutes on Saturday than Occidental has all year. But before Saturday, Whitworth had not proven that.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is what changed on Saturday. And the poll reflects it, as it should.

The latter reflects the substance supporting the conclusion that you first offered.  Since it reflects and explains the thought process behind the first conclusion, it is a better response.  That's why we prefer it.  Or at least that's why I prefer it.

As a clarification to my earlier post:

Whitworth is a good team, they have been for a number of years and are having one of their best seasons in recent memory.  Their ability to win on the road in McMinnville is certainly a feather in their (Pirate) hat.   ;D
Whitworth may well be selected to host a first round game with Oxy, and if they are it won't be undeserved - they have played a tougher overall schedule the Tigers.

Linfield is a historically great program, and even though they're having what is a down year for them this year, I am sure they are still a good team.  They are likely a better team than anyone Oxy has played thus far.  I also understand what Pat is referring to when explains the leap of faith voters have to take regarding the overall quality of Oxy's schedule.  What I take exception with is the notion this year's Linfield team (the one going through adjusting to a new coach and QB while suffering the loss of many other key players) is "far" or "much" better than CLU.  As I pointed out earlier, CLU shares three common opponents with Whitworth (who beat Linfield) and has had similar results against those three. I recognize that CLU's poor performance at CMS hurts not only them, but also Oxy, at this juncture.  I just think it is unfair to them, and Oxy, to lump the Kingsmen in with LaVerne and CC in terms of quality of opponent.

The Linfield fans are really having a meltdown. They have been so good over the last four years that they are still in a state of denial. Pretty big blow to go from National Champs to out of the playoffs within two years.

Wow, that takes huge brass balls to make a statement like that especially coming from a team that has had losing records two of the last three seasons and has never been out of Round 1.

Nice work though RFB...you got me...I bit!!!   ;)

DT48,

All in good fun. Linfield fans have dished it pretty heavy to us Redlands fans in the past, it's not too often that you Cat fans are on the receiving end.

No, you're absolutely right...I'm sure everybody has been waiting to pile on for a while!  Gotta be able to take it if you can dish it out!  8)

Make sure you order extra toppings for your pizza, you will need some extra comfort when the playoffs start with no game at the CatDome.

dawg gone it

I read the NWC board quite a bit. The Linfield guys seem to do their dishing on the SCIAC board more than their own.

After losing to the Poets.....I've had the smack talk knocked out of me.

I hope that Oxy can bring some pride back to the SCIAC

So Linfield has 7 turnovers and barely lost?  If before the game someone told me that was going to happen, I would have said it will be blowout.

RFB.....nice ziiinger.

dt48.......maybe you should change your sign to say.."where the cats handed the cheese to the rats"    "  OK, so there is a little fight left in the dawg.

GO BULLDOGS......GO DEEP......dawg gone it

I do think PC is being a little unfair to Colorado College. The CC Tigers have a chance to finish their season at .500 if they can win their last game against the Southwest Assemblies of God (Uh, no, I didn't make that up), which I believe runs a modified single wing offense known as the Wing and a Prayer. A win by CC ought to really help Oxy's QOWI rating.

OxyBob

We can differ on Colorado College -- although there is no way they are in Linfield's league, check the Puget Sound results if you like common opponents -- but a win by them this weekend has absolutely zero effect on Oxy's QOWI. Southwest Assemblies of God is not only not a regional opponent, it's not even a Division III opponent or an NCAA opponent of any sort. As such is has no effect on Colorado College's regional record.

really? La Verne did just beat a team that Cal Lu lost to this past weekend.  Sure the Kingsmen took it to the Leo's, maybe they blew their wad too early.  Cal Lu had potential to be a playoff team, but potential really doesn't mean anything in football.  So ya they deserve to be "lumped" with La Verne and Colorado, lumped into a category of teams who didn't meet their potential.

OxyBob,

That is a nice quote which pretty much sums everything up. It sucks for Oxy if you guys have to go on the road for a second straight season, despite being highly ranked. But I guess that's how it goes when there are so many good teams in the West. Sorry we didn't do our part on Saturday by beating Whitworth. If we had won your boys would likely have had a home game for certain.
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.
