QuoteI just call it like I see it. Loyalty is a big one to me. No way I would have left Redlands after three years, even if I could have played at LINFIELD. Coaching change or not, his move is a selfish one.
::)

Oops! I must have mixed up my quotebooks.

The WW people on their board are doing very well not to clamor up the Qb controversy tree. They did not ask for any delivery to their front door.  I am hoping they web cast some late fall games where whatever Qb simply hands off the ball to the Beav on the turf that calls for special shoes.

Sorry for the less than timely reply, but I've been out of town...

On the Whittier mascot, wow - I am really at a loss for how that got through the marketing committee's focus group (which is where those decisions get made these days)  It seems like if you're going to be the Poets because of tradition the best path is to own it and love it, not try to transform a poet into something that turns into a skeleton under the moonlight in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

As for Jones, well obviously it's his decision - but I'm 100% with RFB in his take on this one. Very few athletes get to be the four year starter at any position in any sport at any school.  I guess in the end the opportunities at WW were more important than seeing through what he started. True, Jones can go play in front of 4,500 - but I doubt there will be 1,500 there who care about sending him out with a great senior year like there would have been this year at CLU.  If the folks in WW are truly as rabid as many on the boards imply they'll be likely to turn on him pretty quick if he has trouble adjusting to the new offensive scheme.  Not to mention the response of the many players in the Warhawk locker room who have strong existing ties to the kids with whom he'll be competing for the starting QB job.

I guess I just wish that if he wanted out he would have packed his bags after fall semester and not stuck around so that he could be a part of the hiring process and take someone else's reps in spring practice before heading for Wisconsin.

Regardless - as summer starts I can't help get excited about the fact that football's right around the corner.  Should be a fun, wide open year in the SCIAC  :)

You're privy to his decision-making process? Impressive. How do you know when he decided?

Scandi....I agree with you in that the SCIAC will be wide open. Before DJ's departure I thought it would be a three way race between Oxy, CLU and UR.  I think that his departure puts CLU  into third.

And "IF" (emphasis added)  he knew he was leaving, didn't tell anyone and participated in spring practice as the starter, that would be extremely selfish and a sign of disrespect for his CLU teammates.

You also make a great point about ow the WW  kids will feel about him and how the fans could quickly turn on him if he is the sarter and doesn't do well.  I am sure there will be some mid-west bias with the player and fans against the kid from Ca.

Fair enough Pat, I reread my earlier post and edited it.  I did not mean to imply that I knew when he decided - I just wanted to express my wishes that all of this could have happened earlier rather than after the hiring process and spring practice.

Tom Brady

I hope CLU brought in a JC kid to take over at QB and dont have to go with their second string guy from last year.  In the little time he played he was pretty shaky.  Not saying it can't be done with him, but I honestly think this throws Cal Lu back around the bottom of the SCIAC.  I hope this kid can prove me wrong, and if he does, I will be the one looking like an idiot on here ;D
On the Jones issue, I thought the way he did everything was pretty questionable.  I really dont like the fact that he was on the board to help find the new coach and then he takes off.  Does this mean he was obviously unhappy with the selection?  Either way, I am ready for the season to get under way in September.

WT....we are all anxious for September to come.  We might actually talk football rather than throw insults.

McEnroe is a good guy, I talked to him many times while he was at Chaminade high school.  I think he will be a good recruiter.  If he doesn't already have a decent replacement for DJ, he will after one season.  Just from the little I know him and from how he turned Chaminade's program around, CLU is in good hands. Just my opinion.

   Nice accomplishment by UR:

June 13, 2007 - Redlands, CA -
The University of Redlands placed 26th out of more than 300 Division III institutions in the National Association of Collegiate Directors of America (NACDA) U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup.  This award is presented annually by NACDA and USA Today to the nation's best overall collegiate athletics programs across all divisions of the NCAA as well as the NAIA.

Based on the postseason success of each school's athletics programs, the Bulldogs garnered 435.5 points to come in 26th.  Redlands finished higher than any other Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) institution, with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges taking 52nd and 57th with 322.25 and 302.75 points, respectively.  The Bulldogs also placed ahead of some of the best West Region schools, such as Trinity University (TX, 49th), Linfield College (OR, 54th), Whitworth College (WA, 56th), and Chapman University (108th).

This is the third-highest finish in Redlands school history, following previous positions of 16th in 2004-05 and 20th in 2005-06.

Stalker Bob strikes again.......... ::) or maybe  I should call you Shadow Bob.

I know Stalker Bob that you are upset that the UR article didnt mention Oxy.....so I looked it up for you, Oxy was 110th. ;D

Congratulations to U.O.R for their recognition and slight improvement.

However, what matters the most on this board is if the bulldogs can improve from their debacle and mistakes from last year.

I think some of us should spend some time over in the general discussion section where the talk (type?) is more directed toward football rather than waiving private male members back and forth . . . I'm just sayin.

At any rate, Street & Smith ranks Oxy #12 in preseason.  And of course, BFD. But what I noticed was that there was not any substantive "are they our of their frickin' minds?" comments on the discussion board.  Now I love me my Tigers and I have to think that we're well set for a run at another SCIAC title and playoff appearance if it all comes together . . . but in all candor, I would have expected the impact of Collins' departure and the open question of his successor to hit the Tigers a little harder in the preseason prognostications.  And Whitworth is at 10 despite losing its QB and tight end?  Not sure how this is factored in.

Should be an interesting year, especially for those who think that the Tigers have been carried on Andy's back for three years.  Guess we'll find out beginning about 73 days from now.

Yea, I know, the predictions are worth spit and we gott play the games to know a damn thing, but I am surprised.  Of course, I haven't spent my $$ to get K-Mack's predictions yet . . . maybe I should run to the bookstore later this morning.

So, take a look at the Street & Smith pole posted below and enjoy try to talk some football peppered w/ good natured smack.

How awesome is it to see that Oxy is ranked as high as #12 in this pre-season poll? Well, it just tells you that many football savvy writers think that the men in orange and black have yet another chance at earning another sciac crown and another shot at the big dance.
Even though many would argue that the team was carried by mr. collins the last three years, writers like street and smith understand that other guys on the team (who are coming back) are the reason why the tigers will have a better chance at retaining the sciac crown and eventually do well through out the season.
Frankly, whoever Mr. Collins successor will be; whether it's a 5-9 Q.B., a 6-1 transfer from Palomar J.C, a 6-0 relative of the great John Elway, or a surprise and talented transfer from Oregon, they will do just fine with a strong offense returning this fall.

Football savvy doesn't mean D-III savvy.

Is Justin Elway back in the mix after bailing on the team three years ago?
