Taking two of the first five weeks off makes it hard. And since the conference season doesn't even open until Sept. 29, it's hardly the conference schedule to blame.

What's the deal with Oxy's schedule with no home games (and two long road trips to open up at L&C and Menlo) until October?

Did the AD drink too much WT at the last SCIAC AD's meeting?  Seems to put them at some what of a disadvantage?
I think Oxy got caught in a bind because they could no longer play Colorado College.  They won the race to get Menlo rather than Haskell.

BTW,  Will Haskell be able to use their full name when playing at at NCAA Redlands? ::)

Noticed that.  Must be tough since there are so few football playing D3 schools (not to mention how spread out everything is across SoCal) west of the Rockies.

Taking a football team to Colorado, NorCal, PNW has got to cost a small fortune.

GF - are you referring to "Eddie"?

What was the deal with CC?

GP,

It is hard to get games...what makes it even harder is when SCIAC teams won't return your calls.   ;)

Guess we'll have to keep flying to the Mid-West and Texas to find non-conference games, while viable teams and cheaper tickets continue to avoid.

snoop dawg

UR did have a very difficult time filling week two.  Did they have a better option than Haskell?  I dont know.

As to preseason schedules..... Oxy hasn't exactly played the cream of the crop the last two years.

TGP.....if only it were free!  It is costing me more to fly to Spokane from So Cal than to fly across country and with all the stops, just as long.

Darth Vader Dawg.......off to da Bahama's man........ 8)

GO BULLDOGS.

The only other option is to try to get games with D2 or D1-AA schools. ie Humboldt State or University of San Diego. Those probably have to be set up years in advance. :-\

I see two things developing in the NWC. Pacific is studying football for the '09 season.  There is one more game that really helps the NWC schedule.

The second question is whether the NCAA's rescinding the moratorium will prompt Alberston (1) to consider joining the NCAA and then (2) to add football.

Joining the NWC (if the NWC extended the invitation) would offer 8 football games to Alberston.

They were an independent before.

The Oxy web site put the best possible spin on it:

...

If Redlands beats Haskell, they will trumpet it as the greatest nonconference win in the history of the SCIAC. If the Bulldogs lose, they'll do like what they did last year when Redlands lost to Chapman -- they'll erase all evidence of it and just pretend that it never happened.

Spin is what school Web sites do.

Well gang, I'm back, did you miss me?

This falls under the "shameless shill" department . . . and no, I get no commission, don't know Pat from Adam, and my relationship with K-Mack is limited to that brief moment a couple of years ago in round one of the playoffs when he attended the Oxy/Willamette game and I offered him my hat (not knowing that he was the almighty K-Mack at the time) . . .

So go to http://www.d3football.com/kickoff/ and order your copy of the 2007 edition of "Kickoff."

It will have great info and helps support this website, without which we might actually have to do real work.  Besides, where else can we enjoy such a terrific ringside seat to D3 football haps, establish virtual relationships with 'Cat 'n 'Rat lovers, get into pissing matches w/ Bulldogs, and otherwise waste away our days on a topic we love.

Buy early, buy often, but in any event, buy.

bye

In 2006, Oxy's first month looked like this:

Sept. 9    Lewis & Clark @ Oxy
Sept. 16  Colorado College @ Oxy
Sept. 23  Bye
Sept. 30  CMS @ Oxy

So this year is

Oxy @ Lewis & Clark
Oxy @ Menlo
Bye
Oxy @ CMS

No big deal.  It's exactly what one would expect as is the balance of the schedule.  We get Redlands and CLU at home which, quite frankly, is great.  I'd rather have to the two biggest (as currently anticipated) conference games on Patterson than early non-conference matches.  Maybe that's just me.

So no, it's not a disadvantage, just part of the normal expected process.  A couple of tune-ups followed by a bye before kicking off league competition.  Is it better to be at home that on the road?  Sure, but nothing out of whack.

So we play two NWC teams and an independent in our non-conference schedule.  Personally, I'd love to see to see different NWC teams tossed into the mix.  Maybe someday, but in the meanwhile I'll just enjoy the games and not worry about stuff over which I have no control.
