hello all, I'm new to the board and in the process of slowly weening myself off of High School football and focusing on College Ball. My son will be an incoming freshman football player at Whittier this year.
I look forward to a fun year.
thanks
Welcome aboard.  +k for your first post. :-*

We've been needing some Poet posters.  There has been a lot of respect for their effort and play by the fans from all teams.

This is the year the Poets climb out of the cellar.

Welcome aboard. Don't let the Oxy and Redlands fans give you too hard a time.

That's the best laugh I've had all day. But welcome though!

thank you...I was very impressed with Coach Hammer and in the end, he is the reason my son chose Whittier over Oxy,Redlands and Chapman.

The biggest problem for them is getting the athletes that can play as well as scoring a 2200 on the SAT.

I know that Lewis & Clark is a good school and very competitive for admission, but I don't think that it is any tougher than Oxy.

The success of the program is going to rely on investment and support by the administration and alumni, imho.

Your son was admitted to Oxy, Redlands and Chapman and chose to matriculate at Whittier?  And the coach/football program was the reason for his choice?

Would love to hear a detailed explanation for what he found most compelling about Whittier.

Welcome to the board.

The football program is starting to get some support from the administration. They realize that for the school to be competitive in the recruitment of students, football has got to survive. Unfortunately, the support from the faculty is sorely lacking ever since I was there in 1982 and 1983. We (football players)  had a hard time getting teachers to respect us as students. Just a bunch of dumb jocks to them. The new turf is beautiful and I would hate to see it be used for only soccer or cheerleading camps.

Welcom aboard. It'll be nice to get new perspective from one of the other schools in the SCIAC. Enjoy yourself and don't take all of us that seriously. We like to have fun.

He didn't choose his college soley on the football coach. If it were strictly a football decision, I'm sure one wouldn't pick the team with the worst last ten years in the conference. Football is what motivated him to a 3.5 gpa and Honors classes in the Troy Tech program and his National football foundation scholar athlete awards. withouts grades and committment, there would have been no football for him.

all the schools are outstanding academically. In the end, Whittier felt at home for him. He is from a smaller high school and Whittier reminded him of a High school/family atmosphere. The teachers, administrators and coaches were very approachable and accesible. It just felt right to him. I am not bad mouthing any of the other schools, becuase we were obviously impressed with all of them. As far as Coach Hammer, he is very young and aggressive and his attitude was a perfect fit for my son. It was the right decision for him, becuase that's what felt right to him. It was a long and tedious recruiting process, and in the end our family is excited about his future.

hope that answers the question?

Fair enough . . . it's not often that one learns of a football player being accepted at both Oxy and Redlands and then choosing Whittier.  Didn't know whether financial aid packages played into the decision making process.  And if he was accepted at Oxy (was he?), very curious as to what his visit was like so that he felt that the faculty, adminstration and coaches were not as approachable as at other schools.

If you don't want to explain in this public forum, I understand.

Yeah -- that's probably not something that everyone needs to share in.

He was accepted to Oxy,Redlands,Chapman,Whittier and Holy Cross.

The east coast did not have enough money to make it feasible for us to send him there, so that was impossible for us.
