Don't worry Newbiw(FTP), we all make mistakes at first on this board. As most of the older folk on this board have mentioned, you will be surprised at how many people end up rooting for any D3 player who has a chance to make it to the pro's. Heck, check out the SCIAC baseball board sometime in the future and just see how many of us have supported guys from other schools getting a chance to shine in the bigs.

thank you old wise one for your understanding.

No, thank *you*, FTP, for your understanding. Admittedly, we SCIAC fans tend to go overboard when one of our own does well in sports. We're not used to big time football prowess and success like you are. After all, this isn't the Freeway League.

OxyBob

I guess my first impression of Occidental was correct when we went on the visit. Full of themselves, better than everyone and not afraid to tell you so and much to high class for the likes of my family. Thank god the youngster chose the ghetto for his college experience.

FTP, as a member of the ruling class from Oxy, I grudgingly applaud your blue collar football struggles. The only strategy capable of defeating Oxy on the gridiron is the widest possible unity of all the class and social forces whose interests run counter to those reactionary Tigers. Such an all-inclusive coalition would need to be led of course by working class Whittier, in close alliance with La Verne and other oppressed workers and football players. The coalition will include an ever-growing left-center political coalition that includes progressive independents at Pomona, who recognize the growing danger Occidental football poses (even though they really don't care about football). This all-people's front should strive to, and be able to, attract many who rooted for Oxy in the past.

Workers (and Poets) of the world unite; you have nothing to lose but your chains (or another football game).

Speaking of the darkside, they had a nice little piece in the LA Times college football preview.

That nice little piece only took up half of a page. You can read it here:

Moving Forward

My paper was missing the preview about Redlands.

OxyBob

The SCIAC champ always get's the preview. Don't worry Oxy will be regulated back to second place status soon enough.

The water bill must be tremendous at Redlands. They must have to constantly keep refilling the pool, knowing how Redlands athletes are known to hydrate, hydrate, and then hydrate.

OxyBob
The Redlands water polo team is #1 because of their Zen approach to the game.  They are as one with the water.

On the other hand, it seems OxyBob would have been a natural gridiron star.

As for OB . . . he was way too cool to be part of something so mundane as football or fraternity

It was a massive conspiracy among the ATOs, PSOs and SAEs. Bastards!

I seem to recall that he had a distinct interest in certain horticultural endeavors.  It was a long time ago . . . it might have been more closely related to issues of chemical reactions triggered by applied heat sources and the attendant psycho-biological ramifications.

Yeah, only the THCs would have me.

I was checking out any rosters posted so far.  When I looked for your son I saw he looked
just like the Poet's mascot...it can grow on you!!

As a matter of fact all the players looked the same.  It's good to see the coach has already established some team unity. ;)

Hmm . . . baby girl must be keeping daddy up at night . . . while a Redlands victory over Oxy could relegate the Tigers to a second place SCIAC finish, i'm pretty sure such position will not be the result of any regulation.

God I'm a pompous ass . . . must be my educational background.

Score one for the Toothster, the Oxy tag team is rolling today. Just make sure Bob doesn't break a hip trying to pull a "Snuka" special.

Gray Fox

Danny Jones had a good day today for UWW.  18 for 28 for 239 yards and one TD.  Three drops (one a TD).

Little Ricky has been named #1 nose and also plays tackle. Not bad for a freshman.:)

The offense looked abit rusty, but by the end of the scrimmage, they were clicking on offense. Mostly passing from Scurlock. The defense looked very good. We'll see how the young d-line does in a game situation. The linebacking crew is solid, so if the line can plug up those holes, we'll be fine.

Overall the team seems almost ready to go. Little Ricky thinks they need a week or so to be ready for Carthage.

Article in the Ventura County Star about Cal Lutheran's running game:

CLU Showing It Will Be Well-Grounded Team

QuoteSaid [head coach Ben] McEnroe, "When you're breaking in a new quarterback, you're going to rely on your defense, being sound in the kicking game, and being able to run the football. If you can do those things, not only can you bring along a quarterback, you can win a lot of football games."

Translation: "We have no one who can throw the ball."

OxyBob

Actually, Bob, it's all a part of CLU's secret plan to hide the fact that Mark Sanchez, dismayed at the possibility of being beaten out by Aaron Corp,  transferred over from USC  ;) ;D ;)  We're just waiting for the right moment to unleash the new air attack.

No doubt it will take some time to make the transition, I am glad that Rojas and Montano are back, as many of you know they are indeed gifted runners.  I can only wonder how much smoother the transition might be going had one of the two kids fighting for the starting spot gotten the chance to get more reps this spring.  You're welcome, Warhawks, for all the free reps your QB got at CLU's expense  ;)

BTW, Tooth and RFB, there is a slang use of "regulate" that works quite well with RFB's original formulation.  As in "this year Team _____ (your favorite SCIAC team goes here)is going to regulate, and OXY will be relegated to 2nd place".

Finally, you gotta love the way the major sports media is freaking out over the A-State win at Michigan.  I bring this up on a D3 board because I see many parallels with the way the public views D3.  There's very little understanding out there that D3 kids were all outstanding high school players.  You also never want to discount the mindset that comes with a winning tradition.  There's no doubt those A-State kids went out there to win, and they did.

Gray Fox

Since Cory Ohnesorge has failed to hook on with the Giants, I think he should stay in New York and get a Wall Street job.
He is a natural for what some financial experts call the "Goldilocks Economy" ;)

Whenever a football factory like Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas, Oklahoma or USC gets beat, it's always a great day everywhere else for college football fans. At least now we won't have to endure another hapless appearance by completely overrated Michigan in the Rose Bowl.

OxyBob
Uh Bob, if Michigan manages to win the Big 10, the Rose Bowl is exactly where they will be even with the A-State loss. Or is it because of the loss.

thescout

Carthage will be a very difficult opponent for the Poets.  They outmatched them last year in Wisconsin.  I don't expect any different against a very slim Whittier defense.

It would be nice to see a different result, but it becomes difficult to rely on just hopes.

Tigers Football Team Back on the Prowl

Los Angeles, Calif. (September 1, 2007)

Occidental College football players have enjoyed their summers but now it is back to work as the Tigers are just a week away from their season opener. The eighty-six man squad stepped foot on Patterson Field in mid-August with the goal of earning a fourth consecutive championship in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

For a quarter of a century Dale Widolff (left with Aaron Stanton) has called Occidental home. He has led the Tigers to nine SCIAC Championship seasons and currently the Tigers boast a 26-game regular season winning streak dating back to 2004. Over the past three seasons Oxy has captured three consecutive SCIAC Titles and appeared in four post-season games.

The Oxy Tigers have captured a trio of SCIAC Championships and looks to continue those winning ways in 2007. Among the players returning are twelve All-SCIAC players from last season including seven Tigers starters on the offensive side of the football, six to the Oxy starting defense and one special teams player.

A trio of seniors earned offensive First Team All-SCIAC Honors last year. Running back Matt Andersen (Sacramento, Calif.), wide receiver Rocky Ciasulli (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and center Chris Kyles (Las Vegas, NV) made significant impacts in 2006. Andersen (left) was ranked third in NCAA Division III in scoring with 12.0 points per game. He and Ciasulli led the Tigers rushing and receiving with 81.2 yards per game and 71.6 yards per game respectively. Andersen added 282 receiving yards (31.3 per game) and totaled a conference high 18 TDs. Sam Emerson (Puyallup, Wash.), a Second Team All-SCIAC selection a year ago, and Tom Gonzales (Camarillo, Calif.), a SCIAC Honorable Mention, will both be back on the o-line for their junior seasons. A pair of sophomore receivers, Jordan Inabnit (Turlock, Calif.) and Chris Washington (Point Arena, Calif.) were recognized for their first year performances with SCIAC Honorable Mention. Inabnit completed his first season with 38 catches for 538 yards and eight touchdowns. Washington crossed the goal line four times with 200 yards on 21 catches in 2006.

Defensively the Tigers welcome back First Team All-SCIAC linebacker Anthony Ostland (Las Cruces, NM) who tallied five interceptions, 40.5 tackles and two sacks as a junior. Earning Second Team All-SCIAC Honors are the sophomore duo of defensive lineman Alex Wertheimer (Everett, Wash.) and punter Alex Groh (Fountain Hills, Ariz.). Wertheimer (right of photo at right) was a disruptive force, at defensive end, for his opponents all season, tying for the league lead with 6.5 sacks, while Groh led SCIAC punters with 41.0 yards per punt. Joining Wertheimer on the d-line will be senior SCIAC Honorable Mention James Sabo (Seattle, Wash.) and Victor Lopez (Albuquerque, NM). Sabo (left in photo at right) contributed 17.5 tackles and two sacks while Lopez tallied 6.5 total tackles, including five solo. Rounding out the returning defense is senior defensive back Daniel Tromello (Newbury Park, Calif.). He tied teammate Ostland with five interceptions, broke up seven plays and was among the Tigers leaders with 30.5 tackles (24 solo).

With big shoes to fill after the graduation of three-time SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year Andy Collins the quarterback job is up for grabs with three viable candidates in the mix, including junior Justin Goltz (left). Also graduating were nine additional players who garnered conference recognition. However, a strong core (52 letter winners) of experienced senior and junior players and a year under their belt for the Class of 2010 coupled with incoming class of 27 freshmen and transfers the Tigers will again be contenders for the 2007 SCIAC Title.

The Tigers are currently ranked by Street and Smith and also landed in the sixteenth spot of the Touchdown Illustrated poll.

Oxy will travel to Portland, Ore. to kick off the season against Lewis and Clark on September 8 at 1:00 p.m. The two teams met nearly a year ago to the day at Patterson Field. The Tigers walked away with a 49-7 victory and hope to do the same in the 2007 opener.

Anything out of camp about Scott Saunders and Justin Goulds [sic]?
OxyBob

Nothing I've heard.  My best guess is that unless one of the three has clearly emerged in camp, that at least two, if not all three, of them will see playing time against Lewis & Clark to try and shake things out.

But WTF do I know?  All I hope is that at least one of them rises to the top, demonstrates a good arm, some manuverability and leadership so that the Tigers have a shot at their 4th consecutive SCIAC crown.  All signs point to the first weekend of October as a crucial game, eh?
