.

I know that L&C and Menlo are bad, I expected some blowback as noted in the post, but I figured it would come from our NWC and Redlands pals, not the enemy from within.   ;)

Lewis and Clark is not bad---they're just hiding their true brilliance for NWC action.  Then they are gonna bust out their super-powered offense and brick wall defense.....or maybe they'll continued to be blown out by every team they play...  As for Menlo---I don't think they are as  bad as the numbers indicate (or should I say I don't think they will be as bad as the current numbers indicate).  Nonetheless---the Tigers have put both of these teams away in convincing fashion which should indicate that at a minium, Oxy is not bad!  :)

Oh, and somebody in the SCIAC should play Linfield! LOL...

And Whitter?  Wow . . . great showing against Carthage . . . maybe the Poets are moving up from enigmatic upsetters to the real deal, surpassing Cal Lu this year as a possibility in the SCIAC hunt?

Congrats to Rickie and Lucy on Little Ricky earning the starting nose slot as a frosh.  Well done.

thank you for the comments on LR.

The Poets played their hearts out. They are a well coached team.

FTP - Congrats #63 played well for his first game.  Had his name called several times for tackles.  :)  How does he like the college game?

thank you. We are very proud of him. He is undersized for his position, but my guess is that the guys he went against have a respect for him after last night. That little guy works hard. :)

enough about LR..the team looks good. We need more consistency on the OL. Scurlock is running for his life back there. I realize that most of his running by design, but some help would be good. The defense will lay the wood. Arlo is a stud!

as far as what LR thinks of the college game goes, he loves it! much tougher than HS, but he adjusts fast. The kid loves football.

thanks again

Oxy fans, I'm back for another season...

What happened to our old SID Andy Holmes?  It's amazing to see a nice report posted the day of...and not a week later!  ;D

Sabretooth Tiger

Andy has moved on to new challenges.  Tracy Maple has stepped in bringing a load of SCIAC experience with her and is doing a great job.

D O.C.

If not LINFIELD then La Crosse had an open date this week as well

Bob,

You were right. What was i thinking in believing that the Whitworth game v.s the Leo's would turn out to be a good game. By the time i showed up at the field during the 2nd quarter and looked up at the score board, i was already aware that the game was in the rat's full controll. I did stick around and saw a couple of offense and defense of series from the Leo's during my break, but both were just awful as the rat's were just dominating the leo's. I didn't have time to post any update on the game as my class time wouldn't allow me, but, i must now admitt that this young buck was wrong in thinking that maybe the game would have been good.
Hope you and the tiger faithful had a great time up north. I am sure Coach W. and co. had a blast in finally getting a big "W" on that field. In addition, after reading the write-up from Oxy's website, i am sure Coach W is also happy for his special teams doing a great job during the game. Looks like the tigers were not "Milling around like sheep" on saturday.

Article in the San Bernardino Sun about La Verne's 34-0 loss to Whitworth:

Loss Doesn't Deter La Verne

Quote
The final number on the scoreboard might indicate that the University of La Verne football team is headed in the wrong direction. But new coach Andy Ankeny wasn't as disheartened as one would think.

The Leopards suffered a 34-0 non-conference loss to Whitworth (Wash.) Saturday, which means they are now 0-2. But he still saw some improvement over the 21-7 setback a week ago at Puget Sound.

"We made some strides this week, especially in the tempo and speed we played with," he said. "We just have to ignore the scoreboard. We have to focus on what we're doing and that will take care of itself."
...

Ankeny, who was named the school's head coach in May, was excited about the chance to play an established program with a successful track record.

"That's the best chance you have to see exactly where you're at," he said. "I want our guys to have challenging games because it's the only way to get better."

Coach Ankeny wants to play challenging nonconference opponents so he can gauge his team's progress and get better. Wow, what a concept.

Sure, because it's clear that Coach Widolff's strategy over his 25 years of coaching is a clear shambles that has failed to yield an iota of results.

OxyBob and OxyOswald. I tried asking around for you guys and even hung around in front of the Oxy grandstand at half hoping one of you might spot me. Oh well, some other time. Congrats to the Tigers on a convincing win.
I was down on the field the majority of the game and stepped out during half time.  Sorry to miss you, great game for the Tigers though.  A few errant passes that got broken up by Oxy's wideouts helped Goltz out, but other than that a fairly easy win for the Tigers.  Hopefully they take their bye week seriously and get ready for conference play.  CMS and Redlands will both be a challange.

I know that Oxy takes a lot of heat for it's opening out of conference schedules so I expect some pooh-poohing to the following query:

Could Oxy be a better/improved team in its first post-Collins year?  Two consecutive shut-outs could be indicators.  The running game seems to be pretty dynamic and Golz may have lost some of his more "gangly" scrambling tendencies.  A bye week followed by Claremont lead up to the big showdown with Redlands.  Looking forward to it. Looking like it could be quite the test for both squads.
You'll have to wait on the final verdict on Oxy this year until they play a conference opponent.  Unfortunately our out of conference schedule isn't much more than a method to evaluate players, work out kinks, and get some young guys playing time.  Menlo and L&C were hardly a challenge.
Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Thanks for the comment on "Little Ricky"  We are very proud to say the least.  I have to admit that seeing him play in his first college game was very exciting for us.  We had hoped the kid would get some playing time but as it turned out he played the whole game on defense with exception of 3 plays!!  (sorry I'm a proud mom and had to brag a little!)
The whole team looked pretty good.  Of course Carthage was alot bigger than us and at times But we gave them a run for their money!  our OL needed to protect the QB a little more (although to their defense a few of the times Scurlock was all over the place before they had time to help him!  That guy is amazing!!)

I believe Whittier is the real deal.  With the coaching staff and the talent they have  I think this will be their year to shine!  Guess time will tell.

"the enemy of my enemy is my friend"

Sounds like an algerbra formula.  So lets see, tooth is my friend and we have common enemies, therefore OB and I have common enemies, therefore Ob is the enemy of my enemy.  WOW......so OB.....does this mean we are friends? ;)

I uderstand both sides of the non conference scheduling arguments......I happen to agree with my new friend OB....I think it is much more beneficial to play a tough preseason schedule and gauge yourself accordingly rather than run over patsies. I understand there are arguments to be made both ways, however with three non conference games, I think one very tough game, one patsy and one game somewhere in between is a good mix....kinda like Redlands schedule. ;)

That's why you went to law school.

I refuse to revisit the scheduling debate . . . beat it to death last year . . . though it would help get me to five star status faster . . . hmmmm.
