Fear the Poet,

Your poet team beat us last year.  The poets played tough then and it sounds like they have an even better team this year.  My boy had a friend on that team.  They played at the same High School (Los Al).

Good luck to the Poets on Sat.

Paddymac

i went to the Menlo game this year at your place. The team looks good. Should be a good one this year. My son has two former high school teammates on the Panthers, so I always got my eye on them.

best of luck to you as well

hey paddymac, i will look for you on level 7, brats and beer, right? I hear Chapman has a good passing offense. Always plays Redlands tough, how will the tough Redlands defense do against the pass?

paddymac

Redbulldog,

Thats right.  On top of the parking structure otherwise known as LOT 7 (west of stadium).  We are going to Bar-B-Q until security shuts us down.  Chapman beat us last year and I hear they look good this year.  Hopefully Redlands prevails but my guess is that it's going to be a great game.  I think our front four will keep the Chapman QB on the run.  Hopefully he has to hurry his throws.  How bout the Chapman front four?  Our Defense really shut down Whitworth.  I think they are really good.  This week will be a real test.

We'll set up at around 5pm. See you there.

oops, I thought you were a Chapman guy..my apologies and good luck anyway.:)

I'm a big fan of Coach Maynard. He is a class act who runs a great program.

Conference Rankings from Around the Nation:

No. 4 Northwest Conference (NWC)
2006 non-conference record: 13-13 (One team went 1-1 in the playoffs)
Reasoning at the time of Kickoff ranking: Bumped down after Linfield had an off year and Whitworth could not carry the conference by itself in the playoffs. Some of its depth had wilted as Pacific Lutheran and Willamette slid below .500 and Puget Sound's 7-3 season included not-very-competitive showings against the NWC's top two.
2007 non-conference record so far: 9-12
What's been established so far in '07: Early NWC results send mixed messages, as Linfield looked powerful again vs. Hardin-Simmons and Whitworth knocked off UW-Stout. But the league is also just 6-6 against the SCIAC and Chapman, the only other measuring stick in Division III on the West Coast. Redlands won 24-12 at Whitworth and Whittier won 28-26 at Puget Sound, leaving us to question the NWC's overall strength this year.

No. 20 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)
2006 non-conference record: 10-12 (One team went 0-1 in playoffs)
Reasoning at the time of Kickoff ranking: Beyond Occidental, teams hadn't always been competitive in non-conference play.
2007 non-conference record so far: 7-7
What's been established so far in '07: The SCIAC is capable of surprising. Redlands' win at Whitworth meant Occidental may have a challenger on its hands.

Interesting look at the two West coast conferences.  I'd like to contest that the SCIAC is getting stronger as opposed to the NWC getting weaker... but that's up for debate.

Congratulations to Whittier QB, Josh Scurlock for being named SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week!   ;D

Thats great news to hear about Scurlock. The guys sounds like he wants to leave a big impression in his final year as field general for the poet offense. However, as i mentioned before, as long as his o-line decides to block for him (so that he wont have to scramble as much) he'll be fine. That's until he finally gets contained by the tiger D ;D

I agree about a little more protection would be good. The more and more I watch him play, the more I think his scrambling around is by design. He just isn't a pocket passer. They could give him a lifetime to throw, and I still think he would be running around back there. ;) He is very fun to watch and very tough. I'm sorry I will only get to see him play one year.

I will disregard that comment about the Tigers.  ;D

oxy bob, I believe as you indicated that the NWC is still stronger overall than Sciac overall. Whitworth is a very decent team and Redlands (who will continue to show strength this year) played them at a level that would make all SCIAC proud. In the past few years, Oxy was at their own level (a man amounst boys thanks to Collins et all) This year, with Cal Lu in trouble, the top two teams of SCIAC can compete with the NWC, but the rest would struggle with all but the very bottom of the NWC.

Insofar as whether the SCIAC is stronger than the NWC, I guess we'll find out when the conference champs inevitably meet in the first round of the playoffs.

OxyBob

No doubt...you could almost set your clock to it!

My comments were focused directly on this statement from Around the Nation.  I was taking exception to the idea that the only possible solution to Redlands' and Whittier's performances against the NWC is due to the fact that the NWC has gotten weaker and not that the SCIAC is getting stronger as a conference.  But I realize this point it moot until the SCIAC takes on a 10th game and schedules teams like Linfield/Whitworth/Willamette on a regular basis.

It doesn't take a 10th game to do that.
I'd like a 10th game.  Without it, I personally don't see us (Oxy) starting to schedule top tier NWC teams.

Much as I do not like to think it, all our 10th game talk has to be academically viable or I like a snowball's chances better.   8)
