OB......Thank you.  I appreciate your post, +k for it.  I didn't think they did either and in my first time at Patterson, found it to be a classy place to play and be a fan.

I did see you there and am now sorry I didn't stop by and introduce myself, but you would have already known who I was by the number on my jersey and painted on my face.  Thanks again.

Dawgs,  Thanks for the support.  Honestly, both teams had opportunities to win the game, dropped interceptions  by Oxy, dropped passes by UR, penalties by both team(deserved) that altered the game, int at the one yd line,on and on.....

But, it was fun to watch both teams put it all out on the field, you could tell from the start how important the game was to both teams.  The rivalry is great and fun to watch. Last year was my first experience with d3 and I had no idea that d3 games would be so intense and that the rivalries are just as important as games like Ohio St. and Michigan. While I would have liked to see a different outcome, it was great to be there and fun to watch.

I always thought the announcer should be, somewhat neutral.

Reality almost never reflects this sentiment.

For example, last year was the first time I'd heard that the crowd had to give the teams and staff a five minute "cooling off" period before joining them on the field (5, 10, 15, can't recall which) . . . all designed to lessen the risk of risky confrontational behavior . . .

Not making any comments on whether such rules are good or bad, don't care to get into that debate . . . but I believe that their existence explains the announcer's comments.

Pat . . . does this sound right to you?

This is mandated during the NCAA playoffs -- the media, for example, is not allowed to talk to players until 10 minutes after the game is over. Some schools apply this to regular season games, which is their right if they want to do so. Not many do it in the regular season, but some do.

The most annoying announcement was something like this.....Occidental will not tolerate any racial, ethnic, etc. slurs from the fans, or any antagonistic remarks directed toward the refs, ...this is cause for ejection.....I'm paraphrasing but, if he said it once, which I could understand, he said it a dozen times.  Sorry, just my opinion, he was insulting.

You found this problematic? It's the NCAA sportsmanship statement.

The (conference/school) and the NCAA promote good sportsmanship by student-athletes, coaches and spectators. We request your cooperation by supporting the participants and officials in a positive manner. Profanity, racial, or sexist comments, or other intimidating actions directed at officials, student-athletes, coaches or team representatives will not be tolerated and are grounds for removal from the site of competition. D O.C.

One could tell the announcer, who sounded creepily like long time L.A. KROQ dee-jay Rodney Bingenheimer, was reading frequently from a script.
The way the Occidental field is set up both groups of fans are on the same side of the field.  I could not even hear the Redlands' displeasure because they were way down at the opposite 20 yard line. That was probably because I had a seat directly above a drum circle conducted by OXY students.
The ten minute rule would certainly simplified the Mishap In The Mud some years back in McMinnville.

Well, it took the former NAIA schools a little time to get into the D-III rulebook. :)

PC....I fully agree with the statement and it being read ...once.....not 6 or 7 times...and usually in response to a mere groan from the UR side of the stands.

Pat Coleman

Gotcha. Your initial laundry list of complaints made it seem otherwise.

Thats because I cant read or write witout the help of my secretary..old age is a b*%$^h! ;)

Congrats to Oxy for moving into the 21 spot in the top 25 d3 poll, they certainly deserve it.  To the victor go the spoils.

I dare not inquire why Whitworth, with the same record as UR is #25. ;)

Bob-
Now that you know CLU's true colors you are that much closer to honorary Kingsman status.  I'll even help you learn the alma mater the next time I see you.  :D

I just hope that our Violet and Gold are somehow different from Whitter's... ;)

I was very impressed by CLU's effort on Saturday, especially with the defense who more or less contained Scurlock, a player many on this board agree is the most mobile QB in the conference.  The Kingsmen D made several big plays, most notably forcing a fumble when Whittier had it first and goal early in the second quarter with a chance to cut the CLU lead in half.  Toilolo (the starting QB) showed some nice mobility and creativity under pressure, which resulted in a few big plays.

Sounds like the Oxy-Redlands game was a good one.  Not sure what to make of CMS falling flat vs. Chapman...

Eyewitness report from Thousand Oaks and Eagle Rock:

Caught the first half of the CLU-Whittier game. Mt. Clef Stadium may be decrepit and rickety, but there's not a more picturesque setting in the SCIAC for a game. 80 degrees, beautiful blue skies, mountains in the background, packed stands on both sides. Met the Ricardos, who (as we have all been reminded more than once) have a son who's the freshman starting nose tackle, but who both look like *they* just graduated from high school. Man, am I old. Also, redbulldog came over and said hello. I don't know which of us was more impressed, RBD because he was meeting the legend who is me, or me because I was meeting the father of the legendary Richardson boys.

By the way, yesterday at the Cal Lutheran-Whittier game I found out that the CLU colors are not purple and gold. Before the game the Glee Club sang the school alma mater, and it turns out that the Kingmen's colors are violet and gold:

Oh, summon your sons and daughters,
Your banners and flags unfold,
Call them to Alma Mater,
The violet and the gold.

California Lutheran,
College of our dreams,
Upon whose crested summits
Sunbeams dance and gleam.

Oh, summon your sons and daughters,
The 'circling hills enfold,
Near deep Pacific waters,
The violet and the gold.
Your love of freedom cherish,
Your love of truth prevail,
Your love of Christus merit,
Alma Mater, Hail! All Hail! All Hail!

OB- Thanks for the nice comment about the boys. Nice meeting you and your wife. Same to you "fear the Poet", nice seeing you.

As for the reference to the school colors of violet and gold in the alma mater, violet is almost the same as purple.  "purple" any color having componets of both red and blue.(websters) "violet" a reddish blue color...(websters). You know us scandinavian types would just say, Ya ,sure you betcha, its close enough anyhow, ya know!

Now that a have bored you to tears, the Kingsmans jerseys were actually Yellow this Saturday, Whats up with that. I was rooting for Whittier for the first quater because their uniforms looked exactly like what I wore. Then I wondered "why did they put the Kingsmen in front of the vistors stands?" (I told you I was a little slow, Maybe I belong on that Special "bus" you guys have been talking about)

As for the Oxy/Redlands game.... Oxy was better prepared, they executed better, they won. Heartbreaker for us, Oxy knows they beat a good team.  I am sure Oxy is glad that one is in the books and over with.

Talking to one of our DB's after the game, he said that he never has played against a smarter, more well prepared team as this Oxy team. When he covered outside, the pattern was inside, when he shifted in, it went out. The communication between oxy receiver(s) and Qb was flawless. This is what wins games.  I am still very proud of our Bulldogs, second half adjustments on offense (500+ yards) and stiffening of our defense almost pulled us back into it. Oxy bent but didn't break and just didn't allow Redlands to put the final points on the board. Great win for oxy, tough loss for Redlands.

From what I saw of Chapman, they are better than you would think.  They have a good O and D line, or at least they did on the night they played UR.  Like I said before, they get every ounce of effort from their players and they are well coached.

I think when the season is over they would be in the middle of the SCIAC standings.  I guess we will see.

RBD-

I think someone posted earlier on the board that the CLU players voted to purchase special, gold 'big game jerseys'.  I am curious about the switch as well, but if that play like they did Saturday they can wear pink plaid for all I care  :D

BTW-

Scandi- thanks for the helping the special ed kid.

Oxy bob- I hope CLU stays with purple. Violet also refers to a type of "pansy". There were no pansies at CLU on Saturday. The "gold " jersy's did the job! Keep it going Kingsman.
