Congrats to Oxy on their win. ;D

The men in orange and black still need to fix more kinks and mistakes(as evident from their first 2 quarter), but, overall good win.

By the way tooth, Southwick got into the game late in the 3rd quarter, the little dude did a fine job.

Sounds like the pups rebounded for a big win tonight.

up 20-10 in third, lose 38-20. Very frustrating !

The offense is killing me. Turnovers galore and stupid mistakes.

We had the lead and the ball, but couldn't sustain a drive. defense on the field way too much.

congrats to Chapman

Will be interesting to see if the PP administration has made a commitment to the football program to get Caron back.  Back in the early years of his first go-around, he was able to get some kids into school who helped build the foundation for a pretty solid program for a few years.  It's a shame that Caron took the program out of SCIAC for a few years, because they could have been very competitive for a title with Jack Ramirez at QB in the 96-97 timeframe, rarely using to the SCIAC teams they did play.  Those were the days of 70-7 blowouts of CMS, with close losses to Trinity, Azusa Pacific, etc.  The admissions breaks ended after a few years, and the football program went south again along with the number of players, even after getting back into SCIAC.

Screw Pomona for leaving the SCIAC. They hurt the conference in doing so. And by the way they would have got rolled by Redlands & ULV during that timeframe.

From the Oxy website:

Tigers Trounce Leopards in Battle of the Cats

Los Angeles, Calif. (October 13, 2007)

Occidental came out with all cylinders firing, scoring 24 unanswered first half points en route to a 45-7 victory at D.W. Patterson Field in SCIAC action tonight against the University of La Verne.

While the offense was potent, the defense was all over the field, combining for 12 broken up plays, a sack, and five tackles for a loss of yardage.

Occidental ended up with 498 total yards on 63 plays while La Verne totaled 333 on 66. As a team Oxy picked up 23 first downs and held ULV to 14. The Tigers scored in five of seven red zone opportunities in the game.

There really was no question as to who was in control of the game tonight as the Tigers maintained possession of the ball for 10:33 during the first quarter of play. Oxy scored on its first possession of the game for the second week in a row when Neil Martin booted a 27 yard field goal to get things going.

After the defense stopped the Leopards they again put points on the board when junior quarterback Justin Goltz found senior wide receiver Rocky Ciasulli in the end zone for an eight yard TD pass.

Again the Tigers held the Leos offense scoreless and added another score to their total. Goltz connected with Joey Coverson for a 28 yard completion, extending the lead to 17-0. On the ensuing Tigers possession senior running back Jason Haller ran one yard into the end zone following a 58 yard completion from Goltz to Coverson.

Occidental took a comfortable 24-0 lead into the locker room.

After receiving the ball to begin the second half Joshua Washington picked off Goltz to set up the only Leopards score of the night. ULV quarterback Troy Doolittle found an open Grady Thomas for a 36 yard pass to cap off a 58 yard, eight play drive.

The next two touchdowns came by foot as Haller ran 13 and 33 yards past the goal line. With 8:38 remaining in the game senior quarterback Danny Southwick found Jordan Inabnit for a 10 yard touchdown pass to round out the Occidental offense on the night.

Jarred Salha, JD Ciasulli, Daniel Tromello, James Sabo and Patrick Sarkissian  finished the game with 4.0 tackles apiece. James Leonard was credited with a sack for a loss of three yards and added three solo tackles and an assist. Sarkissian and Brian Crider each broke up two plays in the game while Tromello and Chris Washington each forced a fumble.

Behind a stellar effort by the offensive line Goltz was 20-26 for 235 yards with two touchdowns. He added 60 yards on the ground including a 25 yard run. Southwick was 3-3 for 49 yards with one score.

On the receiving end of things Rocky Ciasulli finished with seven catches for 75 yards with his longest at 20 yards. Coverson caught two balls for a total of 87 yards.

By foot Haller led the way with 75 yards on nine carries as he averaged 8.3 yards per run. Freshman Ryan Nastor carried the ball six times for 27 yards and added 64 yards on punt returns with his longest at 42 yards. Late in the game Bo Renaud capitalized on his opportunities to carry the pigskin as he gained 51 yards on seven rushes.

Alex Groh averaged 45.2 yards per punt as he kicked the ball four times for a total of 181 yards. His longest of the night was 58 yards.

Branamier Courtney led all players with 8.5 tackles and Jason Carpenter recorded 7.0 for the Leos. Offensively Grady Thomas was the leading receiver for either team with 117 yards on four catches, including a 36 yard completion.

Tonight's victory extends the Tigers' regular season win streak to 31 games. They improve to 5-0 on the season and sit tied atop the SCIAC with Cal Lutheran University (3-2) at 3-0.

On Saturday, Oct. 20 the Tigers will travel to Pomona-Pitzer where they will take on the Sagehens who are 2-3 overall, 1-2 in SCIAC play. Kickoff will be at 1:00 p.m.

CLU Sends CMS Staggering in 47-12 Home Rout

Saturday, Oct 13, 2007 5:28 pm

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The California Lutheran University football team improved its unbeaten SCIAC record at home on Saturday afternoon hammering Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Colleges, 47-12. The Kingsmen took the lead on the opening offensive play as wide out Chris Hammond caught a 62-yard touchdown pass just 17 seconds into the game.

After taking the early lead and forcing a CMS punt, Jericho Toilolo led an 11-play, 99-yard drive capped off by a Danny Hernandez 17-yard touchdown grab to take a 14-0 lead. The CLU offense managed to score on its first six possessions en route to a 31-6 halftime lead.

The Kingsmen defense held the Stags to just 140 total offensive yards. CMS managed just two drives that went for 10 yards or more, both going for touchdowns. The Stag offense struggled on third downs converting just 1-of-14 opportunities.

CMS got on the board an unusual fashion after getting its own punt deflected nearly straight up in the air, Stag sophomore Patrick Atwater picked up a loose ball and took it to the Kingsmen three-yard line. The play set up a D.J. Lillard touchdown run, cutting the first quarter lead to 17-6.

In contrast to the CLU opening play of the first half, the Stags fumbled to open the third quarter as the Kingsmen forced the lone turnover of the game. Despite recovering the ball inside the CMS 10-yard line the Stag defense forced a Connor Pearce 26-yard field goal. Pearce would go on to make 4-of-6 field goals with a long of 40 yards.

Toilolo tossed four first half touchdown passes to Jesse Matlock, Brandyn Bennett, Hammond and Hernandez. The sophomore quarterback also scampered for a 21-yard touchdown run, his first of the season to score the lone second half CLU touchdown.

Toilolo completed 19-of-27 passes for 333 yards and four scores on Saturday. Since the team began conference play he has completed 67-of-97 passes for 993 yards and 11 TD's and just one interception.

CLU safety Garrett Redd led the Kingsmen with six solo tackles while junior defensive lineman Jacob Calderon notched 4.5 tackles including his second sack of the season. Ian Freeman and Austin Jones combined for eight tackles, including 3.5 for loss.

Cal Lutheran (3-2, 3-0 SCIAC) will be tested in non-conference action on the road next Saturday, October 20 against Chapman University at 7 pm.

Man,

Stuck in the office trying to write on a glorious Sunday afternoon . . . and where are my distractions?

What has happened to this board?

Donde estas mis amigos?

[insert sounds of crickets chirping]

And congratulations to Oxy in moving up the D3 charts four spots to no. 17, Linfield up one to no. 19 and Whitworth up two to no. 23.

Yup, the new top 25 is posted, go check it out . . .

jeez, I've got to get this work done and have an attitude adjustment . . . or two.

Tooth, who works on a post-rainny and now sunny beautiful So. Cal afternoon.  ;D

My guess is that half of the fans on this board are still hung over after their favorite team loss or after their victory celebration for any big win.

Good to hear that the Who is now in a race with the Tigers for the top spot in the SCIAC. It will be interesting to see how "the who" responds to a team like Oxy when both schools clash in several weeks. (oh wait, i'm jumping ahead of myself :P

I'm not so sure about that...Those PP teams were pretty good on both sides of the ball - the '97 team was in the top 5 nationally for yards/game and points/game.  '98 team wasn't as good on offense after Ramirez graduated, but was in the top 5 defensively.  The '99 team went 7-1, losing only a one-point decision to LaVerne.  Still not a lot of depth, and injuries/numbers were always an issue, but hopefully Caron starts to get some teams of that caliber back to PP.

Tooth-

I'd just chalk it up to a weekend in which the SCIAC matchups weren't very compelling.  The CLU-CMS game was somewhat promising, but CLU played very well and it seems that something must have happened after their loss to Oxy that's left the Stags a little deflated.

The CLU offense has been fun to watch over the past three weeks, but I've been even more impressed by the defense.  Outside of CMS' one TD drive, the Kingsmen D was consistently effective.  Without the Stags wacky punt play (snap over CMS punter's head - partially blocked - alert Stag grabs ball and charges 50+ yards to the three) they gained less than 100 total yards.  Now, Browneagle, I am not sure how a 60s/70s rock band would handle the Tigers - but I sure hope the Kingsmen can play the same kind of consistent D in Eagle Rock in two weeks. ;)

But that's getting ahead of ourselves.  Chapman appears to be a much improved team, and I think this weekend's game will be the most legitimate progress report to date.

I tried all day and all of the night to figure out what you were referring to, scandi, but you really got me. As for the CLU-Oxy game, time will tell. This I know.
I believe Scandi was referring to BE's Who reference pertaining to Cal Who

Great weekend for the Tigers, congratulations on another big win.  Looks like there is a seemingly big match-up coming in two weeks against a Cal Lu team that looks like they've pulled it together after starting 0-2.

I think we'll see if they're for real after this weeks game against Chapman who is coming off two wins over SCIAC teams and a tough loss against a good Redlands squad.
Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Yup, I often call the Kingsmen "The Who" just to poke and make some good natured fun. Anyways, who wouldn't want their name associated with a great band like "The Who"......

CLU Gets Fancy In Rout Of CMS

QuoteWith a non-conference game up next at Chapman, CLU is now assured of being unbeaten in SCIAC going into its Oct. 27 showdown at conference power Occidental.

"We're still taking it one game at a time," said [head coach Ben] McEnroe, "but we're right where we want to be."

Better yet, lets see how Cal lu's recievers respond to a tough Oxy CB, Safeties et al. corps.

Anywho, i hope all the new kids for the Men in orange and black learn about the history of the  "The Drum" and understand that this is yet another big game that they (and their teammates) must not oversee. In fact, i am sure all Oxy seniors will also mention that they do not plan on handing over the drum any time soon and that this game means serious business. (Believe me, handing over the drum is about the hardest thing any senior at Oxy can do after this game)
