For those of you who missed the Whittier - ULV game, it was a good one. Real heartbreaker for the Leopard faithful...

Poets took it by a score of 31-28

ULV's Taylor Hart missed a 59 yard field goal wide left by a few feet (Yes it had the distance...) as time expired. La Verne really had two chances to score in the closing minutes but couldn't capitilize...  They had a hook and ladder play that was key, but was hurt by an illegal motion penalty on the following play...

I wasn't too impresed with with what I saw from the Leopards, but they hung in and fought... I think they should get Chris Handy the ball more.

I was suprised to see coach Ankeny's style to be so calm and uninvolved. It seams like he really lets his cordinators make the calls. Very different style from what we are used to at La Verne.

At 0-6, looks like we may be on the road to the perfect season, much like the Rams and Dolphins...

Maybe something miraculous will happen... we'll see... ::)

I couldn't believe that kicker. I was laughing at the coach for lining up that kick, untill I almost soiled myself when I thought it was good. :) Is he also the punter? The punter booted a 70 yard or so punt as well. The Leos played hard, but the Poets decided to play in the second half for a change.

haha thats pretty funny. DIII football also got a mention on Sportscenter last night when Stuart Scott said that the New England Patriots are kicking so much arse and playing so well that they are making teams in the NFL look like they were DIII teams! Oouch!
Kicker for the Bills also made a comment in an interview about "it's like Ohio State playing a D3 team"....
Go Cats!

I disagree. The AQ gives the SCIAC champ a playoff spot, which should provide ample incentive for the top SCIAC teams to play top-notch non-conference opponents. Oxy plays one non-conference game against Chapman, which makes perfect sense, but there is no reason to continue to pad the rest of the schedule with the likes of Lewis & Clark.

Another way to look at that would be that the second place finisher has virtually no shot at a Pool C if they played a bunch of cream puffs non-conference.  There are so few spots for non-auto bids that it is important to set yourself apart.  One loss with wins against ranked opponents would look a lot better than beating up on cream puffs and maybe would get you a pool C.   Why not risk it when you have the safety net of the auto-bid.

Redlands has a quality win on the road vs. Whitworth this year yet probably won't get a pool C because they don't have a signature win against anybody else.  Now granted, budget wise it makes sense to play Chapman but imagine if they had wins against say Wisconsin-La Crosse and Linfield to go with their Whitworth win.  They would be impossible to ignore as a Pool C.

The win against Whitworth is enough to get them in if they finish 8-1. "Signature wins" isn't really part of the criteria but certainly you wouldn't need two signature non-conference wins to make the playoffs, I'd think.

Cal Lu was 8-1 in 2005 with a win against  PLU who was unranked and they missed the dance.   Granted PLU was unranked and Whitworth still won't be either in a couple of weeks... ;)

Agreed about the signature wins and the criteria but I'd assume those good wins would be against teams with good records which would help your QOW...no?

First, unless Claremont is now being sponsored by the maker of canned chili, it's Stags not Staggs. Also, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, and Scripps College collectively field athletic teams known as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps; it's not one school. Is it asking too much for a reporter who covers SCIAC games to know this?

i'm on it...i will be sure to have Whittier make chili readily available at the big homecoming carnival this saturday.

you know Bob, if the Poets win sat, they will control there own destiny as they finish the schedule with Redlnds and Oxy ;) .  All we need is to finish out and cal Lu to lose one more. I can dream can't I?

FTP....sounds more like a nightmare to me. ;)

NC state,Villanova,USA Hockey,Buster Douglas...and now the POETS!:)

Tom Brady

Instead of practicing this week, the coaches at CLU should sit the players down and give them lessons on how to talk to reporters.  Good god, last week it was "we have the best receivers in D-III."
Now this week it is a QB saying "I just felt completely focused. If I can do that next week, I'll be able to pull out a victory" (talking about the up-coming ass kicking they are about to get from OXY).

snoop dawg

FTP.....I  was in a Tahoe casino the night of the Buster Douglas fight.  I was going to "bet the farm" against Buster......I still have the farm thank God. The Poets will be pesky, but, ......impossible......doesn't begin to quantify the chances of your dream come true. ;)

QOW is dead and gone, thankfully.

2005 isn't 2007. There may be significantly fewer one-loss teams.

Sorry...i mispoke, I meant under the current system.  I'm assuming a win against Whitewater is worth more than a win against Lewis and Clark as far as the strength of schedule numbers go...but I guess that strength of schedule number only comes into play if the other criteria doesn't produce a result first.
