You certainly can't say that nobody can compete with them. They have lost games to ONU, MHB, etc. It is rare that teams have the ability and opportunity to compete, let alone beat MUC. However, it does happen. UWW gave them a game 2 years ago.

I wouldn't call losing 10 games in the last 17 years much competition...even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while...It's a sad state of affairs if the feel good benchmark is "giving them a game."  Sweet we only lost by two touchdowns! :-\

Again no disrepect to any of the current or former military members. Appreciate your service to our great country. We wouldn't have this forum or football to haggel over  without the many great sacrifices laid before us. But you did take the "combat" analogy way to literally thus I called you a moron in jest and I retract that. Ignorant to the content and interpretation of the original string is more relevant. Now back to football please.

Oh for christ sake. Are you one of the Cali P.C. girls ? As a Vietnam era veteran I can assure that I meant no disrespect to any of our former or current military members nor comparison to any actual war time combat situation. Don't tell the 6'5 340 lb lineman that is going against another 6'4 340 lb that it's not a combat mentality when they are pounding on each other all game, all season. I used combat as a metaphor in the context of the football post discussion. But moron isn't a metaphor in your case.

ECS,
As far as fresh, well not sure any starters are completely fresh after a long season of combat.

Please, how about after a long season of playing, not combat.  You really shouldn't compare football or any sport to combat or war, there is no comparison.  They are playing a game, sure it is an intense physical game, but it is still a game no matter how you look at it.

No you moron, just commander of my VFW post and a Navy vet.

Breakdown: I used "combat" in a metaphorical context to describe a football game. A vet got offended by using "combat" instead of game. It's over.

If you look at it from the long term persepctive that really is impressive. 10 games in 17 years. There is a high school team in california, de lasalle, with the same type of numbers. That's just insane when you think of all of the variables that can happen game in and game out, year after year. But it still has to be played and I'm betting on the Hawks by 3 to make it 11 in 17 years.

Actually I knew where the comment was coming from and was not offended but merely annoyed.  The comparison of sports to military life and war has just always bothered me from the time I was a kid.  When I played ball I never needed all the Rah Rah garbage to motivate me, I used to actually laugh to myself while coaches were ranting and raving in the pregame speech.

DOC, I saw tape on the deffensive line, and I must say they have a motor like I have not seen.  These guys are not excpetionally big, but man do they play hard.

Let me put on my captian obvious hat for a minute...If the oline can give Jones any time to chuck the ball they might have a chance.  Pop open a couple holes for their stud back and they might hang.  I know they have a stud on the dline.  I will be fun to watch.

+K OxyBob. You got the intellectual skills man. Catch up with all of you next week after the Stagg. Leaving tonight on the midnight train. Although FLA to VA miles wise isn't that bad there just isn't any easy way to get to Salem.  >:(  Should have the game in Vegas where we all can roll for a weekend. There is nothing in Salem except for Civil War historical sites. Not a bad thing.

Yes, there should be no mention of combat when describing a game between teams called the Purple Raiders and the Warhawks.

QuoteBaseball and Football
by George Carlin

Baseball is different from any other sport, very different. For instance, in most sports you score points or goals; in baseball you score runs. In most sports the ball, or object, is put in play by the offensive team; in baseball the defensive team puts the ball in play, and only the defense is allowed to touch the ball. In fact, in baseball if an offensive player touches the ball intentionally, he's out; sometimes unintentionally, he's out.

Also, in football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and all sports played with a ball, you score with the ball and in baseball the ball prevents you from scoring.

In most sports the team is run by a coach; in baseball the team is run by a manager. And only in baseball does the manager or coach wear the same clothing the players do. If you'd ever seen John Madden in his Oakland Raiders uniform, you'd know the reason for this custom.

Now, I've mentioned football. Baseball and football are the two most popular spectator sports in this country. And as such, it seems they ought to be able to tell us something about ourselves and our values.

I enjoy comparing baseball and football:

Baseball is a nineteenth-century pastoral game.
Football is a twentieth-century technological struggle.

Baseball is played on a diamond, in a park. The baseball park!
Football is played on a gridiron, in a stadium, sometimes called Soldier Field or War Memorial Stadium.

Baseball begins in the spring, the season of new life.
Football begins in the fall, when everything's dying.

In football you wear a helmet.
In baseball you wear a cap.

Football is concerned with downs - what down is it?
Baseball is concerned with ups - who's up?

In football you receive a penalty.
In baseball you make an error.

In football the specialist comes in to kick.
In baseball the specialist comes in to relieve somebody.

Football has hitting, clipping, spearing, piling on, personal fouls, late hitting and unnecessary roughness.
Baseball has the sacrifice.

Football is played in any kind of weather: rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog...
In baseball, if it rains, we don't go out to play.

Baseball has the seventh-inning stretch.
Football has the two-minute warning.

Baseball has no time limit. We don't know when it's gonna end. We might have extra innings.
Football is rigidly timed, and it will end even if we've got to go to sudden death.

In baseball, during the game, in the stands, there's kind of a picnic feeling; emotions may run high or low, but there's not too much unpleasantness.
In football, during the game in the stands, you can be sure that at least twenty-seven times you're capable of taking the life of a fellow human being.

And finally, the objectives of the two games are completely different:

In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! I hope I'll be safe at home!
