OB's is better... but I just couldn't resist the opportunity!

And I lack the energy to rewrite an entire song.

Doolittledog ...

Thanks for your assessment of the 2008 season for UD.  I'm thinking Coach wouldn't have scheduled the trip to Redlands if he didn't think the Spartans had a chance.  Who wants to go all that far just to be embarrassed?
Hey, we flew all the way to Oregon for the playoffs in '02. ???

I think....Oh wait I know I would rather fly to Oregon and get embarassed in the playoffs than fly to CA for the opening game and get embarassed.

On a side note:  I do not think UD will get embarassed, I look for a good game.

Redlands returns the bulk portion of a good defense and I believe most of the skill side of the offense including the QB.  They have a lot of confidence that this team is playoff ready.  They usually have a big squad.  The '07 edition of the DBQ would handle them by a couple of TD's...the '08 Sparties are going to have their hands full early in the season after a long trip.

I will say this, Ted Runner Stadium is not an imposing place to play...but its a good sized and nicely kept stadium with putting green grass.  It's wide open at either end so the noise does not reverberate and accumulate.  I played there in Pop Warner, Junior High and High School football...it's a fast track.  I always liked playing there.  When the field gets wet, it gets very slippery.

Be prepared for very hot, dry weather....very different from the humidity.  Could get in the low 100's and then it's a baking heat.

Oh yeah, when you are there...those things to the North...big, high, rock-looking things...those are Mountains.  It's where we keep our snow.

Well finally someone starts talking about next season.

Their (the IIAC) posters have a good initial starting point: there is no reason to schedule a long trip to start the year if you think you may lose, or worse, be embarassed. Of course you never think you are going to lose as a player, but there are times when one must be rational and pragmatic about the whole process. As Charlie Weiss said "we are trying to win a national championship, not play the hardest schedule" (paraphrase). This is correct, especially when it comes to out of conference games. I believe we have had this debate before. My philosophy: I am one who believes that if you are a struggling team - you play games which will make you stronger; if you are a good team with a shot - you play games you can win; and if you are a great team - you either play games in which your starters can rest, or that will challenge you and prepare you for the playoffs and/or that one tough in-conference game. I know my thoughts here may be viewed as odd or incomplete... but it makes sense in my head and I think it makes logical sense from a coach's perspective.

Back to the point, in this case, they are expecting a good game, but a winable game. However, as both a player and a fan, I would caution them not to be cocky heading out West. My first game ever in college was against a very solid team - we played the first half well and led at a point deep in the half, but the other team had too much roster depth and that was that. And, a couple years ago now, an Ohio team went out to CA to play CMS with the mindset that they would just stomp them into the ground and that would be that; left the Inland Empire with a loss and having to deal with some player attitude problems.

Back on point, they are expecting a close game against UR and hopefully the SCIAC will prevail. We could use it in continuing to gain respect.

It's winter in Iowa, and it's -1 deg F in Dubuque. Besides football, what else would they have to talk about besides the upcoming corn planting season?

OxyBob

OB we have a lot to talk about.  Sloppin' the hogs, milkin the cows, and cleanin out of the outhouse.  You know we have no formal plumbing in IA and its hit miss around the rest of the midwest.

We have also started talking about huntin and fishin to.  My paw told me that the carp will be running up the mississippi this spring and to get the old tag lines sure up.

I love Iowa . . . used to go waterskiing at Lake Delhi in the summers with my cousins (one of whom swam at Coe) . . . or snowmobiling/quad running on the lake in the winter.

Nothing like fresh picked Iowa sweet corn.

Having said that . . . great place to visit . . . much prefer living in Pasadena.

Tooth, you've been gone too long.

Mrs. Coco and I visited Iowa a couple years ago, and we loved it. It's beautiful country. There were interesting places to visit, and the nicest people you could imagine.

We got to renew acquaintances with some IIAC posters and meet others for the first time. We were able to watch a Wartburg football game at Waverly with the Warthog family,  and DutchFan1 gave us a tour of the Central campus as well.

We visited a presidential library, ate some awesome steaks, and brought home some good wine.

However, I'll take the left coast, too, or Hawaii.

With a population of around 58,000 ... Dubuque isn't a huge city but it has lots to offer ... and its 3 colleges add life to the community.  UD's enrollment is 1/2 of Redlands ... plus it doesn't have the population density from which to draw athletes ... but it manages.

I've lived in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Minnesota and now Michigan.  One is not better than the other ... each offers something unique and distinctive ... including both Califnornia and Iowa.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

I am an Iowan at heart who now lives in Chicago.  Iowa does offer some very nice things.  Great pork and beef.  Excellent bang for your buck on housing.  Limited air quality issues, less congested streets, and the 4 seasons.  If you have never experienced the 4 seasons, I can understand why you would not want to.

I do have to say one thing that IA does lack in a lot of cases in formitable employment for the educated young adults.  If you are interested in working for Wells Fargo, Principal Financial Group, or anyother insurace/finacial related fields then Des Moines has a lot of offer.  Hence why I moved to a larger market.

Tooth...I have been to Pasadena, and you have a great location if that is where you are living.
