Thanks for bringing this up Bob. To tell you the truth, back in the spring of 04' a debate similar to this "Hen :Point-counter point" ran in the Oxy student newspaper citing a concern for "Academics at Oxy suffering for the sake of athletics".

In that debate, some amature reporter cited that all Oxy athletes admitted to our school tend to bring down the "academic standard that makes Oxy". However, the poor reporter was unware that the graduation rate for all oxy athletes (yes, even the archery team) is pretty high and that athletes actually do indeed add some good results to the intellectual integrity of the school (meaning that some athletes can be Rhode Scholar recipitants (hum, Mr. Finn R. or even Fulbright scholars (several guys from the football team, etc. etc.)  In the end, the amature learned that D3 athletes at a school like Oxy are not even close like their D1 counterparts in which intellectual intergrity can be harmed. (hum... Miam U.  hahaha ;D)

I'm going to get hammered on for this, but I stand by it anyways... Pomona already slots their athletes... it's called PITZER.

Some DIII schools slot their athletes, others do not. Do schools make exceptions for some people? I am sure this is the case! It must be.

All the "good" liberal arts schools have now subscribed to the belief of SAT's are racists and horrible tests and we must consider everything.. and some completely exclude SAT's entirely.... Bowdoin anyone? (I know they slot their athletes for sure...) I truly believe in considering all the aspects of a student and/or student athlete. A brillliant person might not take advantage of their situation and a less-educated and someone who might not make the "cut" (so-to-speak) might take full advantage of their situation and be a stellar student and go onto a prolific career. As I said before, I do believe in looking at the entire picture. It is an art and not a science. However, I do have issues with complete slotting of athletes.. ie "we get these 10-15 slots to fill across sports a, b & c... and we will fill them with the best possible athletes regardless of their ability." No one here is that simple-minded to think this does not happen in DIII... we know it does. But, I still do believe a school must have a basic standard with a mindset of how far below they are willing to dip.

I think you should change your name to "Research Bob"

OB still sore about the ring post I see and still yelling from your porch at the neighborhood kids.  :o WIAC does have these discussions. Justin Beaver 2007 Gagliardi Trophy winner was from the #1 team in DIII football.   I'm sure your beloved tigresses have never claimed that distinction nor the National Championship. But I do know that Danny Ragsdale from Redlands was the winner in 1999. Much respect to RFB and team for that.  I beleive that there was a Gagliardi Trophy winner by the name of Brett Elliott in 2005 to go along with his big gaudy ring from 2004. Much respect to wildcat and gang. #1 in football is still #1. Oh wait that's what this post board is for, DIII football.  Retort expected.  ;D

Pomona's student newspaper, The Student Life, recently ran this debate: "Point-Counter Point: Should Pomona Make Admissions Exceptions for Athletes?"

Pro: Admitting more powerful athletes could make Pomona a formidable force in D-III

Con: A slot admissions system would harm our intellectual integrity as a college

We'd not likely see this discussion in the WIAC.

I've been checking for weeks.  There was a rumor on the IIAC board that Oxy was dropping L&C to stop OxyBob from complaining.  But, I haven't found many schedules posted yet.

Chapman,Redlands and Pomona have theirs up. Pomona added Puget Sound and Chapman added Whitworth.

OB still sore about the ring post I see and still yelling from your porch at the neighborhood kids.  :o

I've decided that with the season long behind us it's time to break my self imposed radio silence.

Dear Stealth-
[smack talk]  Thank you for sharing with us how you see OxyBob.  I though you might like to know that this is how I see you (starting at 1:40 on the clip - warning, clip contains blue language).  I think it's extra special that the UWW ring would go well with Eddie's outfit.  [/smack talk]

I am glad UWW won the championship.  It's always nice to have a West Region team win the title.  I am also glad for DJ that he accomplished what he set out to do.  He played very well in the championship game and was clearly one of the missing pieces in the UWW puzzle.  I did find his version of events at CLU (as translated by the game announcers) to be somewhat laughable.  You would never have known that he stuck around all the way through spring ball, and that many of the existing coaches, including the OC, stayed on staff.

You can try as hard as you like to diminish CLU's shared SCIAC championship, but it was a great year to be a CLU fan.  Their accomplishments this year far exceeded most expectations, especially given the injuries and the learning curve that comes with a new system.  National championships are great, and UWW has every reason to savor theirs, but  being #1 is far from the only measure of success in athletics at any level.

UWW9champ

It has been funny listening to people talk about me or comment about my situation negatively when you have no idea who i am or have no idea why i left. i enjoyed my time at CLU met alot of good people/friends who i am still friends with today and they know why i left. basically i dont care what you say because i dont know you or care about you.  but thanks to all the people who stood up for me when i couldnt stand up for myself and had a bunch of people hiding behind there computers. sweet life guys!
by the way this is danny jones. do you like the screename??

Sabretooth Tiger

I don't believe for a minute that UWW9champ is really Danny Jones . . . gotta be a troll looking to stir up trouble.  The Danny Jones I saw on the field was a class act . . . and given that he attended Cal Lu . . . at least moderately literate . . . the post reflects neither quality.

I hope you're right. I'm shocked that someone would come on this board and pretend to be someone they're not. That would be really annoying.

OxyBob

I notice the dripping sarcasm.

OB, I might not be spot on with the Pitzer comments.. however, selectivity does not mean there is not a slotting system in place.. and one can also be highly selective with lower standards... don't have the time to go looking for Pitzer's so-called "standards".

In my years there were more Pitzer football players than Pomona players. Additionally, Pitzer is known for only having "high" standards outside of academics. They watched the Pam and Tommy Lee porn as homework (I kid you not) and there is a class devoted to You Tube of all damn things. Trying to avoid the pun again, it is not known for being a school dedicated to higher learning. At least 3 of the 5 C's viewed it as a joke.. save the radically hippy Scrippsies with flowing armpit hair and leg hair. Just like Mudders earn their reputation as study- and alcoholics.. just like CMCers earn their reputation (sometimes) as beer drinking finance and policy jocks... Pitzer doesn't do much to squash their reputation as a place to go nibble on some sh'rooms and do just about nothing for class.

Combine this with being told by (edit) some people that it was suggested to both schools to have a better chance, and I'm sticking with my view as Pitzer as the easier route to be a Sagehen. I'm not accusing Pitzer or Pomona of working the system persay... but it is definitely the case that the easiest way to be a Sagehen is through Pitzer.

As for schedules... CMS won't have theirs up until mid-season. Have I mentioned the new website is ugly...?

I certainly hope that is not DJ. No one with class would taunt the entire board.

Whatever happened to our dear Poet QB? He must be studying hard.
