I wonder what the history behind NY state moving 18 to 21 was ?

All of the states increased the drinking age to 21 when the federal government decided to withhold a portion of federal highway monies from any state that had a drinking age under 21.

Let's not forget those nice drinking laws in the Commonwealth of VA back in the early 80's when I was in the Navy.  18 to drink beer, 21 for wine and liquor.  I always did love that one.

I think Marines can legally drink at 18 in SoCal as well, while on base.  They just gotta have a sailor explain how to open the can (yet another time.)

We could always drink on any military base, the only drawbacks were 3.2 beer and the base club was basically a sausage party.  The only place it wasn't a sausage party was Orlando where the womens boot camp was.

Fear the Poet

LR went off to camp last night. What a difference from last year. Our collective fears as a family this time last year were incredible. Not knowing what to expect,etc...

The kid went back "home" it seemed last night. What a cool thing to witness as all these student-athletes meeted and greeted getting ready to get after it.

LR couldn't get rid of us quick enough. :)  good times!!

as far as the team. 57 incoming freshman/transfers and 110 total roster players from what I was told. A new field and track, a new press box and a new Baseball field in the works. Things are looking up on Philadelphia Ave. :)

Coach Hammer promised us during recruiting that he was changing Whittier football and LR would be a part of something special.....and I'm starting to believe him.  (could be my annual preseason hope) :)

That's a good theory and all but I'm not buying it.  So if we lower the drinking age to 18 does that intice younger than 18 to drink?  You do have those who do follow the rule and wait till they are 21.  Aren't we opening ourselves up to more people on the roads drinking and driving now because it's legal at 18.  I realize there is a problem with binge drinking on college campus' but changing the law to 18 gives more kids the ablities to go to bars (not just staying on campus) and getting behind the wheel and driving.  We have enough problems as it is with drinking / driving to add more indivduals to it.
I just don't think changing the law to 18 is going to make things better. This is only my opinion and I'm sure there are hundreds more that can debate why I'm wrong.   :)

WHAT THE HELL...      Say it isn't so..... :(

Actually, there are very good reasons to lower the drinking age:

If a person is old enough to serve his/her country and be put in harm's way . . . s/he is old enough to drink.

If a person is old enough to vote, s/he is old enough to drink.

Most persons who are not yet 21, but are inclined to drink, will do so regardless of the law.  With the age at 21, and with the laws being what they are . . . college students gather off campus to drink, and binge drink.

If the age were lowered, then legal drinking could take place on campus, no need to drive . . . not need to binge drink in order to get back to the "dry" party on campus, or to the party where they one cannot drink because of age.

My understanding (and I can't quote the stats or source) . . . is that binge drinking by minors is up, rather than down as measured when the drinking age went up from 18, driven by the feds and highway funds years ago.

Much better that kids who are going to drink be able to do so safely . . . on campus . . . walking or stumbling to and from their dorm rooms . . . rather than getting behind a wheel do drive to the off campus source.

Taking away the "forbidden" image by lowering the age will, in my view, be another benefit.

I find the "If they don't have to do it illegally, they'll be more responsible"  theory humorous.

An 18 year with the ability to drink anywhere he wants will not "stay on campus and stumble home". He will hop in his car and go clubbing!!!

I'm surprised that college educated officials have this view on changing the age to 18. There must be some political advantage to this stance for them.

Just a bad idea and again, I'm shocked that people actually support it.

HEY NOW :D
I will admit that I'm an over protective parent (Shoot Me) however I'm not worried about  lil Ricky even if they change this law.  He is not the party / drinking type and I can say that without any doubt.  That is just something he is not interested in.  (Go ahead tell me about how i'm fooling myself, or i'm kidding myself or I don't want to see it!!   :D) but this is true about him.
I just think we are opening ourselves up to a lot more problems if the age is changed to 18.
Again just my opinion!

Mr. Ypsi

My personal opinion (and based on considerable research years ago for my dissertation [the effects of 18, 19, 20, or 21 MDA laws on 16 and 17 year-olds - conclusion: very little effect, though older age laws were marginally worse]) is that best would be no legal age at all.  MDA clearly establishes drinking as a sign of adulthood, and teens are notorious for wanting to look 'older'.  IMO MDA laws give alcohol an unwarranted 'aura' and 'mystique' which does more harm than good.  Healthy drinking is a learned behavior, not likely to be learned when the drinking is illicit.

In terms of 21 vs. 18, at least one of the most dangerous and stupid (and sometimes lethal) 'rituals' would be slightly less potentially lethal - kids on the magic birthday would only down 18 shots! ;D

I say 18 primarily because I am indescribably tired of the infantalization of our society.  Alexander joined his old man on the battlefield at 16, killed him off about 4 years later, had conquered half the world by 24 and was weeping a couple years after that because the job was done.  And we call 18 year old adults "kids".  They are not.  They are men and women and they should both be treated as adults and expected to behave like them as well.

Well, that may be true, but then again, Alexander's life expectancy was about 43, so he had to work fast. :)

The trouble heer is OZ is we don't treat them as adults.  We try to excuse all of the mistakes at this age away.  If the laws were written in stone and the judges did not have the option to "excuse" away their sentences then maybe we could have that.  Mandatory sentences.  Drop that drinking age.  Say 10 years no parol for buying for under age kids.  And under age drinking loses their license for say 10 years.  The trouble with this is no one wants to punish the guilty any more.  I know I may take real hits on the ole Karma with this one but knowing human nature and being one of the people that turned 18 and was able to drink then (and I doubt much has changed since then) but it will make it into high schools as many kids now don't graduate till 19 that will lead to trouble.
