Scandi, et al
I'll work on getting something up. Took my first day off in 9 months (actually, quite a slew of days off), so I'm just getting back into the swing of reading the board, etc.
I asked for a little something from the seniors and was fortunate to receive it. However, I want to give the roster a look and hunt up a few more opinions before getting around to prognosticating. I appreciate their input and positive outlook. No matter what others may say, the optimism of CMS players is always high, no matter the circumstances.
Hopefully it is not a case where injuries take a toll on the roster and they lose players like Lillard, etc. for chunks of the season.
Not sure if I will be able to make any games this year. We shall see. Would like to, but it all depends on how often I am able to escape the cube.

"Law and order" approach? Might that have saved the CLU season the year CMS upset them..... perhaps? Usually enforcing the rules and making sure your players aren't hosting keggers 7 nights a week is key to a victory or two (at least in DIII)

How did there scrimmage go this year. I moved away to Wisconsin and now I get no Oxy news at all, and it sucks. I see there opening up with Colorado College. Is it a game we should be worried about? Colorado College is a spread team right? I know we  played them in 04 and 05 and we won both match ups.

Go Tigers!!!
No scrimmage this year.  Must have been inner-squad only.

The Tigers are off to Colorado Springs this week, you should meet them there and catch the game.
Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Next year maybe they'll scrimmage the outer-squad.

Article in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin about Ashton Clarke and Claremont:

QuoteProviding the intensity
Clarke lifts special teams play for Stags

When the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team was missing a little intensity on special teams last season, it didn't take long for the Stags' braintrust to come up with the solution.

Coach Rich Candaele and defensive coordinator Steve Retzlaff summoned star linebacker Ashton Clarke.

"He went out there and it was amazing how much harder the other guys played," Retzlaff said. "Guys were playing harder and with more intensity than they ever thought possible. He (Clarke) has that kind of effect on everyone around him and he doesn't have to say anything. It's his actions."

Clarke, a compactly built 5-foot-11 and 215 pounds, is the heart and soul of a much-improved CMS squad, which makes its 2008 debut at noon Saturday at Fritz Burns Stadium against Lewis & Clark.

He earned first-team all-conference honors last season as a junior, leading the SCIAC in total tackles with 117, 26 of those coming against conference champion Redlands.

But the game he singled out was a 27-22 win over neighboring Pomona-Pitzer that returned the Peace Pipe to the Stags. He had two interceptions against the rival Sagehens, returning one of those 6 yards for a touchdown.
...

Clarke spent his first year on the freshman team, but got in some junior varsity games at the end of the season. He progressed so quickly he earned a spot on the varsity as a sophomore, excelling at linebacker while playing some running back.

"I'd rather be the guy doing the hitting," he said.

His leadership is also evidenced by his role as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He will graduate with a degree in economics in the spring, five months before turning 21.

"He is very mature, goal-oriented kid," Candaele said. "The other guys really look up to him. He has never missed a team meeting, a practice, a game. Nothing. He is just a pleasure to have on the team, not just because he is quality player but because he is a good person too."

That pretty much sums up Ashton. One of the finest people I had the honor to play with.

note: the freshman team should be referring to HS, not CMS, as there are no freshman or JV teams in the SCIAC

The Willamette-CLU game should be entertaining. "The Fly" offense run by Willamette is fun to watch with all of the misdirection. Weather forecast is sunshine and 76°F. Simply perfect. CLU will prevail at home.
Agreed that Cal Lu will prevail at home.  Not only do they run their own version of "The Stretch" offense that emmulates Willamette's motion sweep, but they have a good deal of experience against Willamette on the team.

Recent history against Willamette:
2007 CLU 7   @  WIL 14
2006 WIL 16 @  CLU 26

Sounds like Willamette's Starting QB (the guy who can run well) may be out this week which could signficantly limit the Fly's effectiveness which should further shift the advantage in favor of CLU

Yeah, because they don't have the sun in Iowa and people are never outside there during the summer.

Agree 100%.  Whitcomb is a the type of quarterback that is most effective for that offense and with the possibility of him being out for this weekends game really puts the game in CLU's favor.  Leslie is not very mobile so you don't have to respect the QB run plays nearly as much.

Bearcats Outplay Cobbers to Defeat Concordia

QuoteWU starting quarterback Ryan Whitcomb (Jr., QB, Oak View, CA/Nordhoff HS/College of the Canyons) left the game late in the first quarter with a leg injury. His status will be determined later.

Senior quarterback Grant Leslie (Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) replaced Whitcomb as the Bearcats' signal caller. Last year, Leslie suffered a season-ending leg injury in the fifth game and was replaced by Whitcomb for the remainder of the season.
Sounds like neither one of them will be running too well this season with those "leg injuries."  Leslie came in when with WU up 7-0 and helped the offense score 21 more points, being a former starter, I don't imagine he'll have too much trouble running the offense.

This week's SCIAC schedule:

Oxy @ Colorado College
Dubuque @ Redlands
Willamette @ Cal Lutheran
Principia @ Whittier
Lewis & Clark @ Claremont
La Verne @ Whitworth
Puget Sound @ Pomona

Easy wins for Oxy, Whittier, and Claremont.

Redlands appears to be loaded. The Dubuque fans will enjoy some California sun while watching their team get thrashed by the Bulldogs. Don't forget to wear sunscreen, Dubuque.

[Edit: Redlands-Dubuque is a night game, but the pasty white Iowans should wear sunscreen anyway.]

The Willamette-CLU game should be entertaining. "The Fly" offense run by Willamette is fun to watch with all of the misdirection. Weather forecast is sunshine and 76°F. Simply perfect. CLU will prevail at home.

Tough road assignment for La Verne = Loss No. 1.

Last season Puget Sound beat La Verne and Claremont, but UPS was also creamed by Menlo, which was god-awful. In this one I am going to take the Sagehens over the Loggers in a close game.

Since Claremont and Pomona are both playing at home, and both games start at noon, you can enjoy the always unique experience of being able to watch two games at once by walking the 100 or so yards between Merritt Field and Burns Stadium.

Yes he can run the offense but that offesne is not nearly as effective with a non-running QB.  Regardless of 21 points or not Whitcomb's injury is huge for Willamette as they move forward.

Remember, there's regular sun, and then there's Redlands sun ;)

Not only are the temperatures generally among the highest in the greater LA Area, the sun is also filtered through the unique Inland Empire blend of agricultural pesticides, manufacturing by-products, and most of SoCal's smog - which gets blown in every afternoon.

As a fair skinned Scandihoovian myself, I recommend
