Glad to see you separated Notre Dame from the "tougher" opponents.  A very mediocre Michigan team solidly outplayed them, had it not been for SIX TOs (5 of which I would say were unforced).

Spoken like a true, deluded, shameless Big Ten homer. Typical Big Ten analysis: If the facts were completely different from what actually happened, then the result would have been different.

(Somehow the quote function is messing me up - here's my response:)

Actually, I would think the Big 10 was totally overrated, except everyone is SO down on them these days, I'm not sure how they could be!  Perhaps they should start scheduling SCIAC teams in hopes of restoring their pride (or going completely down the tubes)? ;)

But having watched the game and viewed the stats, I stand by my assessment: Michigan won EVERY statistical comparison except TOs (and, obviously, score).  If they had wiped the butter off their fingers, and not inserted Nick Sheridan (who completed 4 passes, 2 to each team), they likely would have won by about 31-14.

C'mon Dens---there is only one Queen (well at any one time);  The rest are Rose Princesses.  Nice catch though on the erroneous use of Street in place of Blvd.

I know, I know. I think I just need to stop posting for awhile. I've tried posting from my new work site but cannot be left alone (i'm constantly being observed by administrators and other staff. That's what I get for being a newbie again).
And to think that I made such a mistake on calling Colorado a street. The old lady from Pasadena should slap me for that.

Go Tigers. Oxy over the Oaks by a large number. Hey, will this be the first time the Tigers beat the Oxy's at the Rock. (Care to add some insight historians Oxybob or Tooth ???).  I know last year's win against the Oaks on their home should have been the the first time in a long while that we have won their.

I think you do need to stop posting while "The Man" is watching....unless Menlo has changed their mascott to the "Oxy's" in honor of this week's game.... :)

My two cents.

As always CMS has the opportunity to beat UPS.

Key points:

Offense
a) Control the ball on offense, cannot afford turnovers
b) Must score when presented the opportunity

Defense
a) Play assignment football - do not get greedy and give up your assignment
b) Tackle low
c) Reduce big plays

Special Teams
a) Field position - execute on special teams, cannot afford to give up huge returns

Yeah, I know these are basic. But these get to the root of the problems CMS had against UPS when I was a player. As long as you play your gap / assignment on defense, the option can be stopped. Offense needs to rise to the challange of facing a team that controls the ball for long periods of time. CMS must match with well-paced and well-executed scoring drives. Cannot score too quickly or else the defense will be worn out by the UPS offense.
That's all it takes. This is a game where small things will win it, and you shouldn't be counting on the home run threat.
I've got faith. Close win for the Stags.

OB,
Menlo is a Jeckle and Hyde team. They did lose to Stout by a very slim margin in OT then got hammered the next week by Chapman. I wouldn't put Chapman anywhere close to Stout in terms playing within the top 25.  So either Stout had one of those strange days and the real Menlo showed last week against Chapman or Menlo was the real deal against Stout and last week was a bad day at the office. ???  On paper it seems as if Menlo doesn't have much hope but who shows Jeckle or Hyde determines how close the end will be.
At any rate best of luck to all this weekend.

Article about CLU's next opponent, Pacific Lutheran, from the Tacoma Weekly:

Quote
Pacific Lutheran loses by shutout in season opener

The St. Olaf football team earned its first shutout since 2005 with a 17-0 win over visiting Pacific Lutheran University on Sept. 13 at Manitou Field.

PLU starting quarterback Michael Byrne was effective until being knocked out of the game by an injury late in the second quarter. Byrne was 8-for-14 for 143 yards with one interception. That interception, however, came at the St. Olaf one-yard line and ended the Lutes' only real scoring threat on this day. PLU had moved the ball into scoring territory when Byrne hooked up with Isaac Moog on a 66-yard catch-and-run play.
...

After Byrne went to the sideline, reserve quarterback Nick Caraballo struggled, finishing 5-for-30 for just 42 yards with three interceptions. Kyle Whitford had four receptions for 35 yards, Moog had three catches for 87 yards and Greg Ford added three catches for 52 yards. The Lutes attempted to run the ball just 14 times and Greg Murphy was the only player with positive yardage, finishing with 16 yards on seven carries.

St. Olaf outgained PLU 365-173. They had the ball for 39:19, compared to just 20:41 for Pacific Lutheran.

For PLU, Haden Gienger had nine solo tackles and Neal Chalmers collected seven tackles and the Lutes' one interception.

Pacific Lutheran returns to action at 1 p.m., Sept. 20, when it hosts Cal Lutheran in a non-conference game at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

St. Olaf scored two safeties, and held PLU to -12 yards rushing and just 10 first downs (none by rush, 7 by pass, and 3 by penalty).

Article about Oxy's next opponent, Menlo, from the Redwood City Daily News:

Quote
Menlo College stuffed by Chapman

Little went right for Menlo College in a 31-6 loss to visiting Chapman on Saturday afternoon.

The Oaks were outgained 374-139, turned the ball over three times and couldn't contain Panthers running back Mike Christensen, who finished with 113 yards on 21 carries.

One of the few bright spots for Menlo was a 99-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter capped by a 1-yard Shaun Souza touchdown plunge. The Oaks' offense managed just 40 yards in its nine other possessions combined.
...

Souza finished with 59 yards on 18 carries to lead the Menlo offense. Justin Weise led the Oaks' defense in tackles for the second straight game, finishing with 12, and he recovered a fumble. Brett Klee added nine tackles while Kael Johnson and Robbie Fritts each had a sack. Tony Ramirez had a breakout game on the defensive line with five tackles, two for a loss.

Menlo (0-2) travels to Occidental next week.

That sound you hear is the sound of Tigers licking their chops.

Comment on the Menlo match up v. Oxy and their performance ytd. I know some UoR people might disagree, as is their right. However, this could be one of those cases where some teams just plain match up better against others.... regardless of one's ability to go out and "punch someone in the mouth." Some teams just flat out perform better against others.

cawcdad

My $0.02 for what it's worth. Having been to both games, Chapman looked like a better team than Stout. The Panthers were not very big, but were very quick. The Oaks played about the same in both games. Menlo had moments where they looked like they might get things going on O but never did in either game. Menlo lost their biggest threat, in my mind, Darrel Willis who looked good returning punts and when he got his hands on a pass reception. He had an injury to his shoulder. Menlo should be no problem for Oxy.

Show menlodaddio13 a good time, he's a good guy.

I am hoping I can crash the SCIAC  / Whittier get together next week in Atherton.

Sabretooth Tiger

I'll take the Tigers 31-10 over the Oaks.

BE . . . Menlo wasn't on the menu when OB and I were in school . . . our out of conference games back in my days included Azusa Pacific, Univ. of San Diego, St. Mary's, Cal Lutheran (pre SCIAC days), USIU . . . never any out of state travel my years . . . we compensated by initiating international rugby tours in the off season . . . but that's another kettle of fish.

Fear the Poet

someone mentioned Chapman was not to the level of others. Chapman is a high powered offense and a damn good team. I don't like them, but they are for real.

see you in Menlo next week when my Poets make Menlo 0-3

FTP, after this weekend, the Oaks will be 0-3 going into the game with the Poets.

Well, you should mention how hard it was to get those Conestoga Wagons back over the San Gabriels. People will understand you playing coastal teams only.

Sabretooth Tiger

Conestoga wagons?  Heck, now you're talking fancy modern contrivances.  Heck, I remember right after we invented the wheel we made up these new fangled two wheeled carts . . . offense would pull going to the away games . . . defense would pull coming home. That was because (obviously) horses had yet to evolve beyond the size of dogs.

;)

stealth

FTP,
I didn't say Chapman was a bad team I said they are not in the same class as the top 25 in the Nation. I think Stout can play at that level at this point in the season which made the Menlo game even more mysterious.
