Game isn't over.
Defensive holding penalty.... I think.....

(New) UPS scores... point pending.... damnit! Need to CLOSE and FINISH.

(New) Defensive Holding is killing the Stags.

Jack Parkman

Hope I didn't jinx the Stags.

CLU is up on PLU 13-7 in the 3rd (I think)

UPS takes the lead. CMS MUST answer (duh). Gotta dig deep. 34-28 at the moment.

(new) Tough tough loss. Had them a couple times.. but at the same time, did come back to take it into OT. Time to regroup. More to come.

Jack Parkman

Ouch, tough loss for the Stags.  My bad again on the pre-mature congrats.

MonroviaCat

Great game (from what I've just read).  I don't think too many thought the Stags would play very close to UPS but they certainly gave them a run for their money today.  Very Exciting.  Lewis and Clark and PP looks close as well.

Just have to grow from the game. They played their asses off. Few mistakes. Came up short on a few things. In this case, not really a moral victory. However, good things to take away from the game, as well as things that they must work on.
One game at a time.

Is it my imagination or has the SCIAC board lost a lot of folks since last year?  Awfully quiet for a Saturday night in DIII land. Just back from Oxy's 38-28 victory over the Oaks in a game that was a bit too exciting from the Tiger's point of view.

38 pts . . . offense did a great job . . . well, I'd give 'em a B or B+ . . . a few hiccups here and there, but overall a very good outing, nice balance running and passing . . . O-Line gets an A+.

Defense and special teams have a lot of work to do if Oxy wants to be in the hunt for another SCIAC crown, especially the secondary.  Props to Menlo . . . Molina(sp?) QB who seemed to be platooning with another QB, a nice touch with the ball . . . Menlo looked much improved over previous incarnations.

But . . . a win is a win . . . it was a gorgeous night in lovely Eagle Rock . . . glad the team has two weeks to make some fixes and fine tune everything before the conference opener against the Stags back on Patterson Field.

Io Triumphe . . .

And as to all of this . . . "they didn't give us the tapes" discussion . . . do people still use tape?  Thought everything was digital now?
;) ;D

Just got back from the Redlands/Whitworth game. The Rats played hard but they were physically ran over by a better and more talented team. If it wasn't for the touchdown pass which was a great throw/catch they would have been under 100 yards of total offense.

Tough break on Kemp as he looked good in person. Andersen is a good back, tough and physical. He just couldn't get going against Redlands front seven. I'm confident they will bounce back in conference

CalSon

I just got back from the Azusa Pacific-UW La Crosse game.  Great game that came down to the end, that APU won 13-10.

Can someone tell me why Azusa Pacific doesn't play any SCIAC teams anymore?  I used to go those APU-SCIAC games back in the 1980s and 1990s, but now there aren't any.  Chapman is not even on the schedule, and I remember those early Chapman squads blasting the Cougars.

Just seems odd to me that APU is playing two DIII teams from Wisconsin and anothter from Texas (East Texas Baptist) but no SCIAC.  Why are they spending all that money to fly all over when La Verne is 10 miles away, the Claremont schools are less than 15 miles away, Whittier and Oxy are probably 20 miles away and Redlands/Cal Lutheran are probably 40 miles?

D O.C.

Welcome CalSon.

I await SCIAC responses to your query.

I listened to the last of the LaCrosse - APU game and posted the final score on the NWC-SCIAC in-game updates board where Sabretooth will find the real action last night...by NWC people listening to SCIAC games.

I know Dens . . . kind of slow here in the SCIAC virtual reality . . . fortunately, lots of actual face time with the community last night at the actual game.

Just kind of wondering what happened to OB, BE, Oz and the balance of the Oxy part of the board . . . Scandi's kind of quiet . . . RFB must be busy with his toddler since he seems to arise only when UoR is slighted . . . at least there's ECS . . . or maybe folks were just away enjoying the last weekend of summer as we officially welcome in Autumn tomorrow?

Man, this summer went way too fast . . . of course maybe the fact that it's sunny and warm explains it all.

D O.C.

AND there were waves in yesterday before the games that you missed.

Parity perhaps, eh? Willamette - Redlands in the first round? Naw, let's stop that from happening.

Foss

38-7? I thought Redlands would win but not by that kind of score. No getting around it, that is a total beatdown of a team that was one spot out of the top 25 and the two time defending NWC champ. 2nd lopsided win for Redlands after the 37 point clobbering over a team that was 7-3 last year in the IIAC, a pretty good conference.

Redlands and Willamette seem to be the two teams that are getting it done on the West coast so far this year.
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

Great to hear that Teams like the Tigers, Hens, stags and Pups all played their butts off in their quest to get a W. Unfortunately, I was't able to go to the Rock and catch the game nor log on to post a comment or two ( had to be with my family as my mother just had surgery friday night). Glad to hear that many of you caught good games (i.e the thrilling stag/Ups game, the hens win against, Cal lu trying to bounce back from their first lost and of course the Pups trying to prove that they belong on the national rankings.
Hope that I can catch next weeks Whitter v.s Oaks game up north as I make my trek to catch my dodgers destroy the Giants.  ;D

Tigers Take Home Opener

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Sept. 20, 2008) – Before a packed stadium, the Tigers used a second half surge to outscore the Menlo College Oaks 38-28 in the Occidental College home opener tonight on D.W. Patterson Field.

A scoreless first quarter was followed by a 28 points in the second quarter, 14 for each team.

Menlo struck first with a two-play, 78 yard completion from Angel Molina to Dino Arancibia just 51 seconds into the second quarter.

Oxy responded immediately as Bryan Fiorito ran 67 of the 76-yard drive, finishing off the play with a one yard rush into the end zone. Neil Martin completed the play to knot the game at 7 with 6:52 to play in the half.

On the next possession senior Daniel Tromello recorded his first interception of the season, picking off Molina, the Menlo QB, at the Oxy 25-yard line, returning the ball nine yards. This set up a two-play drive, which ended with senior quarterback Justin Goltz completing a 63-yard pass to junior wide receiver Jason Lehman.

The Oaks came back with a  71-yard drive down the field to tie the game at 14 with a five-yard pass from Molina to Jordan Long before Eddie De Leon finished it off with his second PAT in as many chances.

After the break the teams again exchanged touchdowns right out of the gate with Goltz finding Lehman for another long completion, this one 59 yards, giving the Tigers a 21-14 advantage.

Two possessions later the Oaks tied the game for the final time of the night, at 21-21, with a 28-yard completion from Molina to Anacibia.

On the Tigers' next offensive series Goltz ran the ball seven yards into the end zone after a nine-play drive to give the Tigers a 28-21 lead, which is what the score stood at entering the fourth quarter.

Three minutes into the final frame of regulation Fiorito again ran the ball by the opposition with another one-yard touchdown run, scoring the Tigers' ultimate winning TD.

Shaun Souza added to the final Oaks score with a four-yard run followed by a De Leon PAT to give Menlo their final of 28 points.

After missing a 30-yard field goal in the first quarter, Martin redeemed himself with a 32-yard FG in the fourth quarter with just 2:11 to play for the final Tigers score of the night.

The Occidental defense was led by sophomore Zac Perkins who made 11 total stops, with a team high four solo tackles. He was responsible for one of the five Tiger sacks for a loss of six yards. Jesse Fischer also recorded a sack, pushing the Oaks back eight yards. Jim Hildensperger had a sack for a loss of five yards and broke up a play while  Kyle Spaulding made two tackles for a loss of eight yards. Each finished with nine tackles. JD Ciasulli was next in line with eight. Tromello was a defensive nuisance adding one unassisted tackle and four assists, including half a sack. He also broke up three plays to go along with his interception.

Oxy's offensive line protected Goltz in the pocket, not allowing any sacks while the QB was 14-for-22 for 269 yards and a pair of TDs. Lehman led all receivers with 205 yards on six catches with two touchdowns as he racked up a game high 216 all purpose yards. Fiorito was next in line with 148 total yards for the Tigers.

Chris Washington caught two passes for 31 yards while adding a 20-yard punt return and three kick returns for 54 yards to finish with 105 all purpose yards.

Freshman kicker Joshua Mun again booted the ball deep on kickoffs for the Tigers. Alex Groh had a 55-yard punt in the fourth quarter for Oxy. Martin finished with eight points on the night.

As a team Occidental accumulated 463 yards of offense while Menlo gained 370 yards. Oxy picked up 20 first downs and the Oaks had 17. The Tigers were 1-1 on fourth down conversions and 4-5 in the red zone. Menlo was just 1-4 on fourth down conversions while converting three of four red zone chances.

The Tigers improve to 2-0 on the season while Menlo falls to 0-3. Occidental will have a bye week next weekend before returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 4 when they host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game of the season. Kick-off will be at 7:00 p.m. on D.W. Patterson Field.
