I know it's a year and half down the road but I can shut up now about the SCIAC ducking Linfield.  Starting 2010 the 'Cats will be playing Cal Lu and LaVerne.

Of course, Redlands ducked us again.  ;)

Gosh darn it, I'm so mad at Redlands for making Linfield lose and miss the playoffs the last three years.

At least we now know that LaVerne's staff has a bigger set than Maynard.

wc11......ok, I can undertand why Linfield wants to play more d3 teams on its schedule and the SCIAC is a natural fit.  I also understand the Redlands issues.  But are they so desperate that they want to play Laverne?  Playing them certianly cannot help their SOS rating.  Not trying to be a wise guy just inquiring.

We are losing Western Oregon (DII) and Hardin Simmons in 2010 and these are the two teams that are willing to play out of the SCIAC.    WOU and Linfield don't want to play anymore because the only benefit of playing is saving money in travel and that's it.

As AD Carnahan said, "Since the fall began, both Joseph Smith and I have called every Division III football playing institution in the SCIAC."  Redlands and Linfield were close (again) but Redlands opted to play somebody out in the ASC and the only two that said yes were CalLu and LaVerne so Linfield agreed.  I think Linfield has been so starved for non-NWC DIII games that I don't think the 'Cats were willing to hold out for something better and have a willing team walk away.

It's not like we're flying Haskel's out to the 'Catdome.

Honestly, I think Haskell would beat Laverne :D

It is makes such good sense for the 3 power teams in the SCIAC to play teams, not just Linfield, from the NWC in the nonleague part of the season.  In my opinion, the chance of playing them twice, as in the first round of the playoffs, and is greatly outweighed by the benefit.

Now, now RFB.  I don't blame Maynard for Linfield's shortcomings the past few seasons.  Besides, I know Maynard is WAY too busy being Widolff's caddie the past 5 years to worry about too much outside of the LA area.

I'm not sure I follow you. You mean like Coach Smith to Willamette and Whitworth?

Good for LaVerne !  They played the 12th toughest strength of schedule this year.  I saw them play Willamette and they hung in there for the first half.  They want to compete and will get better for it  :)

He's too, too modest...

From the NWC page today 12 11 2008:

QuoteD O.C., yes 2009 is going to look like 2008 in terms of our schedule but all that will change starting in 2010.

In the most recent "Carney's Corner" the article that Linfield AD Scott Carnahan typically sends out during the year he addresses Linfield's football schedule and developments for 2010-2011.  Carney talks about how they've contacted the SCIAC over and over again with no takers but we finally have two starting in 2010.

"Since the fall began, both Joseph Smith and I have called every Division III football playing institution in the SCIAC. We have finally been able to make some headway and have scheduled California Lutheran and La Verne for the 2010 and 2011 football seasons. Obviously, this is going to create a big increase in our budget, but we all feel it is in the best interest of our student-athletes and institution to move in this direction."

This is really great news for the 'Cats and it's great to see that we will have at least 8 DIII games starting 2010.  I suspect that SOU will be the non-DIII team we keep playing and if Pacific does come back we can dump the Raiders or go to a 10 game schedule and keep SOU.

Here's the link:  Carney's Corner

Hooray! for Monrovia Cat, CalCat, DO.C. and OxyBob!!!

DOC... when can we get tickets  ;D

Boyz, Boyz, Boyz....
simple....it seems that a venerable Lutheran organization underwrites the trips for California Lutheran and Pacific Lutheran every year so that those institutions can keep playing each other, so why don't you two compose a letter to the Southern Baptists apologizing for the last 20 years and ask them to underwrite such a sweet deal for us, the Sister Schools?

Run left, run right, try to pass= O'Boyle

QuoteBill O'Boyle is entering his second season on the Whittier College football coaching staff.  He was named the Associate Head Coach and Director of Football Operations for the Poets in 2008.  He also serves as the Linebacker Coach, after spending six seasons on the coaching staff at the University of Redlands.

O'Boyle began his coaching career in 1988 at Dana College, where he was the defensive line coach for five seasons.  He then moved on to St. Cloud State University for two and a half seasons and during his time there, coached the defensive line, defensive ends and linebackers.  In 1995, he became the defensive line coach at Hastings College.  He served in that role for two seasons before being named the defensive coordinator.  O'Boyle continued at Hastings until 2001, and helped lead that program to a #1 national ranking in 1998 and #3 national rankings before the start of both the 1999 and 2000 seasons.  O'Boyle's defenses were ranked in the top 10 in a number of categories during the 1998 and 1999 seasons.  He then went to the University of Redlands in 2001, where he assumed the defensive and recruiting coordinator responsibilities.  In 2002-2003, he helped guide the Bulldogs to back-to-back NCAA playoff appearances.  In 2005, he moved to the offensive coordinator position at Redlands.  Since 1993, O'Boyle has worked numerous summer football camps and NFL training camps.  He was named the AFCA national assistant coach of the year in the NAIA in 2000.

O'Boyle graduated from Dana College in 1990 with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education.  He is also working on thesis requirements for a Master's Degree from St. Cloud State in Athletic Administration.  He currently resides in Whittier with his two dogs, Tess and Tsar
