News from the NCAA on playoff selections.
http://www.ncaa.org/wps/ncaa?ContentID=46929
Another item on the committee's agenda called for a tweak in selection criteria for the Division III Football Championship. Since football teams can only play up to 10 regular-season games, selection criteria used by other Division III sports that play more contests are less appropriate for football.

The committee will examine the following criteria in no particular order:

Head to head competition.
Win/ loss percentage (overall).
Results verses ranked opponents.
Strength-of-schedule (contests versus all opponents).
Opponents' Average Winning Percentage.
Opponents' Opponents' Average Winning Percentage.
Results verses common opponents.
Evaluation of a team's win-loss percentage during the last 25 percent of the season is applicable (end-of-season performance).
An online process to evaluate officials also will be implemented in the fall of 2009.

I'd bring up the first topic of the news release but that wouldn't be to realistic for the SCIAC....zing  :D

QuoteRequired for students with an ACT English subscore of 17 or lower (SAT verbal 469)

English 90 must be taught in a really big lecture hall. In 2007, 8% of incoming freshmen at Whitewater had ACT English scores of 17 or below. So out of the 2,671 admitted students who enrolled, 214 of them had to take remedial English.

From the May 7, 2008 issue of the UW-Whitewater publication Royal Purple:

Quote
UW-W ACT standard below average

Low admission standards may deter prospective freshman from choosing UW-Whitewater next school year, said professor Ronald Berger.

At the Chancellor Search and Screen forum last week, Berger said other UW institutions are perceived to be academically superior because they have higher admission standards.

Too realistic.

"It's kind of hard to rally around a math class." Bear Bryant / Alabama

How appropriate in your case that you chose to quote Bear Bryant of Alabama, where the NCAA Graduation Success Rate (scholarship players who enrolled and graduated within six years) for its football team in the last four years was 2005: 39%, 2006: 44%, 2007: 49%, 2008: 55%. By comparison, the 6-year graduation rate for all Whitewater students is 51.8%. The national average is 57%, so you fell short there, but take heart, you beat Stout and Oshkosh, which only graduated 48.2% and 47.1% of their students within 6 years. Well done! (Aside: Only 20.6% of Whitewater students graduated with a bachelor's degree in 4 years. Ouch.)

QuoteIn 2007, 8% of incoming freshmen at Whitewater had ACT English scores of 17 or below. So out of the 2,671 admitted students who enrolled, 214 of them had to take remedial English.

I have to apologize for an error. I posted that 8% of incoming Whitewater freshman had to take the remedial English 90 class because they had ACT scores of 17 or below, but those were ACT composite scores. In too realistic reality, 17% of Whitewater freshmen had ACT English scores of 17 or below, which by my calculation means that in 2007 out of the 2,671 admitted students who enrolled, 454 had to take English 90. (Comparison: The total freshman enrollment at Oxy was 458.)

I don't recall seeing this posted, if it's a duplicate, apologies.

Great and moving clip about Oxy's Washington brothers . . . it's the first segment after the intros:

If it was a repeat, I'd missed it, and what a story! It says a great deal about the Oxy coaches and the program, along with the determination those young men have.
Small college athletic programs are like family for a lot of students, and they wouldn't get that at a big school. I'm guessing we'll all be watching the Washington brothers next season.

Thanks, Tooth, for posting that.

D3football Top 25, ranked by the Princeton Review Admissions Selectivity Ratings, which measures how competitive admissions are at the school. This rating is determined by several institutionally-reported factors, including the class rank, average standardized test scores, and average high school GPA of entering freshmen. The rating is given on a scale of 60-99. (An Admissions Selectivity Rating of 60* means that the school did not report to PR enough of the statistics that go into the rating in order to accurately measure its admissions selectivity.)

Well, if there's a problem, you can spearhead another try to create a Division IV.

Different institutions have different missions. A state school is primarily expected to educate people living in that state. They're not going to be Occidental and they never will be.

If you don't want to play in Division III, don't. This is what it is.

I don't perceive a problem, and there's certainly no need for Oxy to leave D-III for another division. Oxy fully embodies the philosophy of D-III which is to "place highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on the successful completion of all students' academic programs." Oxy exemplifies the fundamental principle of the SCIAC, which is "to encourage the highest ideals of amateur sports in an environment of high academic standards."

If stealth continues to feel the need to copy the posts of his WIAC pals like Just Bill or 02 Warhawk and quote them here as some sort of knock on the SCIAC, then I guess stealth needs to be prepared to be reminded of some other differences between the SCIAC and the WIAC.

Ah the real OxyBob has come out of hybernation. I forgot what a pompous prick you can be. I only passed along the info from the selection committee.  No one on the SCIAC had gotten to it yet and I was I being proactive. The zing was in fun. I did put a smiley face thing to indicate as such.  ;D
