Had 3 Cal Lu shirts and a Cal Tech shirt in my AP Physics class today.

So you're saying that three CLU physics students are equivalent to one Caltech physics student. I'd have thought the ratio to be more like 10:1.

OxyBob
The three Cal Lu do not add up to the Cal Tech, your ratio seems about right. :)

"Word on the street" is that Jim Fenwick who was Oxy's OC for the past 3 years is going to be named head coach at LA Valley College where he coached from '91-'96.

Thanks OB. Fenwick did a great job withthe offense at Oxy and I'm sure he'll do a great job (again) as HC at LAVC.

At this time it's difficult for me to predict with any accuracy by how many points Oxy will defeat Linfield. As the season approaches I'll have a better sense about how badly the Tigers will beat the Wildcats. I'll get back to you.

There's a documentary called Harvard Beats Yale 29-29 which recounts the 1968 game between the two rivals in which underdog Harvard rallied to tie 16th-ranked Yale. Film maker Kevin Rafferty (a Harvard grad) intercuts original game footage with interviews of several game participants, including Yale tackle Bob Livingston (George W. Bush's roommate), Harvard guard Tommy Lee Jones (Al Gore's roommate), Yale fullback Bob Levin (Meryl Streep's boyfriend), and Yale quarterback Brian Dowling (who became immortalized as B.D. in Doonesbury). Rafferty also intentionally (or unintentionally, I couldn't tell) portrays the Harvard players as working class, blue collar regular guys up against their snootier Yale rivals, and Rafferty does take the opportunity to edit the interviews just so to make a few of the Yale guys look like pompous a-holes, which is quite amusing.

Chris Erskine wrote about the film in today's Los Angeles Times:

Yale-Harvard game documentary is subtly wonderful

Erskine also mentioned Quantum Hoops, the documentary about the Caltech basketball team, also worth seeing. If you get a chance to see Harvard Beats Yale 29-29 I think you'll enjoy it.

This just showed up in Dallas.

It is a picture that should be shown annually to all D3 teams.  There are many football lessons in here that are better conveyed by old time players rather than the coaches.

You missed a couple of things in your review.

One was the music inspired for the closing credits from the composition by Al Gore who learned to play "Dixie" on the buttons of a touch tone telephone.  Another was the picture of Yale cheerleader, George W. Bush, shooting off a cannon on the sidelines.  And, I thought they had never learned anything in college. :-X

Another thing was the screw-up of a stunt by the Yale cheerleaders at the end of the first half.

Tommy Lee Jones comes across as a real grumpy guy, just like his characters.

There is something I had never seen before.  Near the end of the game the Yale crowd is cheering "We're number one".  Later they changed it to the even more insulting "You're number two". :D

Andy Collins update:

Andy Collins recorded 9 total touchdowns, including 4 rushing, but it was not enough as the Central Valley Coyotes were able to rally past the Stockton Lightning 65-58 Saturday night at Stockton Arena.  For the game Collins was 17 for 30 passing for 5 TDs and 2 INTs, and rushed for 58 net yards on 9 carries with 4 TDs, a new Lightning record.

...and I wanna extend a thank-you to OXYCollins and OXYBOB, for if it weren't for them, this SCIAC bored may have gone from April 10th to May Day before someone came on to ask, "Hey, anybody know when the _______________ have spring practice?"

Article about former Oxy offensive coordinator Jim Fenwick, courtesy of the Valley Star, the school newpaper of LA Valley College:

QuoteForget the Past, Fenwick Looks to the Future

After several months of interviewing candidates to fill the coaching position in the football program, former Valley College and Occidental College coach Jim Fenwick will now take the title of head coach once more.

The announcement was made on March 25 after an election committee narrowed down the seventeen candidates to one.
...

Fenwick was initially brought in as a long-term physical education substitute in fall 2008, and will be replacing Jimmy Sims as head coach. Despite the change in ranks, Fenwick will be keeping Sims on staff in a position which is "still up in the air."
...

As of now, Sims will be helping on the offensive side of the ball with two additional returning staff members, Defensive Line coach Julio Gramajo, and Defensive Coordinator Leon Criner.

According to Coach Fenwick his program will emphasize communication within the team's system. The playbook, schemes, and coaching staff will be secondary.
...

Leading the Monarchs to four bowl games and one National Championship from 1991 to 1996, Coach Fenwick is forgetful of the past with eyes to the future, saying "I'm proud of what we did...but that's not going to help us...things are different (now)."

September 5, the Monarchs and Fenwick will take the field for their season opener against the Ventura Pirates. The new coach approaches the game and upcoming season with a new phrase "We have a team theme we call Valley Pride...we are trying to do our part (and) represent the students of Valley College."

From the Oxy athletics website:

Two Tigers Take Off to Play Professional Ball Over Seas

EUROPE (April 21, 2009) – Two former Occidental College football players have recently signed contracts to play Professional Football in Europe. For the second consecutive summer Rocky Ciasulli '08 will play over seas, while 2009 graduate Daniel Tromello will get his first taste of pro football in the coming weeks.

Ciasulli, who played last year for the Jyväskylä Jaguaarit (Finnish word for Jaguars) in the Maple League, the top league in Finland, has traveled to Italy to play this summer for the Ancona Dolphins.

He joins the Dolphins, who are currently 2-1, to replace a multi-facet player who went down with an injury. Once Ciasulli got the call, he was on a plane within three days. The Italian Football League is the top program in Italy with 10 teams, playing each opponent once.

With the season underway, things will surely be a challenge for Ciasulli.

"So far the players seem really nice. It appears to be a similar team dynamic to that of my team in Finland last year, except fewer people speak English here, which makes communication fairly difficult," he shared.

There are a few English speaking players, however, for Ciasulli to turn to. Two other  Americans on the Dolphins' roster are Adam Persing (OL/DL) '08 and Rocky Pentello (QB) '07 from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. In 2006, Pentello was the d3football.com First Team All-American quarterback.

While Ciasulli is jumping right in the mix, he looks to contribute right away. Last summer his team in Finland was 8-4 before losing a heart-breaking Playoff Game in the first round. He was a key component to the Jaguars' offense throughout the season, though. Ciasulli had 99 catches for 1,526 yards and 31 touchdown receptions. He lead the league in receptions and TD receptions, finishing second overall in receiving yards (7.62 catches/game, 117.38 yards/game).

Just north of Italy, Tromello will make his professional debut with the Monchengladbach Mavericks in Germany, just outside Düsseldorf. Although his season has not gotten underway, Tromello will most likely be playing defensive back and safety while returning kicks, punts and kickoffs.
