QuoteWhy?
This oughta be good.

The SCIAC's been down this road with Chapman before. I don't see why SCIAC schools would want Chapman in the conference. CU's undergraduate enrollment is 4,300 and growing. A Chapman coach told me that they want to get even bigger and eventually move up to D-I. Football-wise, every SCIAC team already plays a nonconference game against Chapman each season. Joining the SCIAC only helps Chapman. This will go nowhere and fizzle out like it has in the past.

More ominous for Oxy, Cal Lutheran, and the rest of the SCIAC, in my view, is a quote from an April 21 article in the Contra Costa Times:

QuoteFrom field to forest
Redlands football players volunteer to clear preserve

The team left the football field behind Tuesday to trample through the forest, the force of volunteerism fueling their strength as they lugged heavy branches out of the brush.

It has become tradition for the University of Redlands players, who give up a week of vacation time each year for whichever organization can find enough work for a large group.
...

This year, the Bulldogs have gone green with their community service, dedicating six days to forest-fire prevention, planting trees in areas devastated by wildfires and building a trail at a Redlands park.

On Tuesday, two dozen football players spent seven hours clearing dead tree limbs from the forest floor at the 400-acre Oak Glen Preserve.

Stacks of branches and piles of logs grew higher throughout the day but the players' gloved hands kept reaching for more. Even Bullet, the coach's German shepherd, kept snatching sticks from the ground.
...

After lunch, the entire team struggled to shoulder a dead 50-foot oak tree up a small hill and through the picnic area. Bullet trotted behind with his own contribution to the cause locked in his jaws.

Team captain Jared Fink said most of the guys volunteer for the feeling of self-satisfaction or pride in helping the community that serves as their second home through college.

"Every scratch you get from a tree is worth it," said the 20-year-old.

"It's not that bad. I like helping and being out with the guys," said the other captain, 23-year-old Dan Selway. "It's good team bonding."
...

Are we going to see the return of Dan Selway? His broken foot must have healed. Oh, oh.

Maybe he was there only because he wanted to branch out.

Andy Collins update:

Andy Collins recorded 9 total touchdowns, including 4 rushing, but it was not enough as the Central Valley Coyotes were able to rally past the Stockton Lightning 65-58 Saturday night at Stockton Arena.  For the game Collins was 17 for 30 passing for 5 TDs and 2 INTs, and rushed for 58 net yards on 9 carries with 4 TDs, a new Lightning record.

More good news on former Oxy quarterbacks:  2008 SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year, Justin Goltz, has been invited to the Detroit Lions rookie camp on May 1-3, 2009!!

Normally, good news - but ...

a. It IS the Lions.

b. They just gave Stafford $78 million.

Still, it is a chance to get the attention of someone (maybe CFL?).

Pat Coleman

Absolutely -- often quarterbacks are invited to these camps just in order to make sure there are enough arms to throw to all the receivers. However, any exposure is good and certainly could help a guy latch on somewhere else even if the team that brought him in isn't intent on signing a quarterback.

The arena league like Collins may be an option. Good luck to him.  He is from Michigan originally.

I saw Stafford his sophomore year in high school.  He was good even then.

So how many Illinois Wesleyan quarterbacks were invited to an NFL rookie camp? Go throw your cold water on someone else.

Andy Collins update, from the Stockton Record:

QuoteLoss costly for Lightning

The scoreboard was painful to look at for Lightning players Saturday night at the Stockton Arena after the undefeated Shock came to town.

But even more painful than a 71-50 arenafootball2 loss to Spokane for Stockton coach Chad Carlson was the loss of four starters, including quarterback Andy Collins for possibly a month due to a knee injury.

"It doesn't look good," said Carlson of Collins, who's scheduled to have an MRI and further evaluation on Monday.
...

Collins finished the game 11-19 for 146 yards and a pair of scores with one interception before going down...

Classy as usual.
"If Rome was built in a day, then we would have hired their contractor"

SCIAC Fan

Great to read about the 3 Oxy guys Ciasulli, Tromello and Goltz taking their game to the next level.. I don't care what anyone says, Goltz getting invited to an NFL rookie camp is a big deal. Goodluck to all three SCIAC players.

23 years old??!!! Sheeesh how many years does it take to graduate from Redlands?  :D

Dear SCIAC Fan,

23? Pshaw! Selway's not even out of diapers yet.

Gee, I've been told, in a lot less poetic language, "Go stay on your own board",and I never got defended, just offended.

If it had been part of a long-term axe-grinding by a particular poster then I would have said something.

Two items in The Detroit News:

Lions claim OT Kirk Barton off waivers

The Lions claimed offensive tackle Kirk Barton off waivers from the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday. The 6-foot-4, 305-pound former Ohio State standout spent his rookie season in 2008 with three other teams -- Chicago, San Francisco and Miami -- before landing with the Bengals.

The Lions also signed several undrafted free agents in advance of this weekend's rookie mini-camp in Allen Park. Lions coach Jim Schwartz said he hopes to have 35-40 players participating Friday through Sunday.

Among the rookies added since the end of the NFL draft Sunday: Northwestern defensive tackle John Gill, Ball State center Dan Gerberry, Maine inside linebacker Andrew Downey, Alabama-Birmingham kicker/punter Swayze Waters, Wake Forest receiver D.J. Boldin, and Occidental quarterback Justin Goltz of Walled Lake.
