Some recruiting news for Poets fans courtesy of the Whittier Daily News:

QuoteThe Whittier College football team just got a whole lot more local.

That's because the Poets recently received four area commitments.

El Rancho High School kicker Doug Soriano confirmed that he signed with Whittier on April 27.

"I liked the way the Whittier coaches treated me," Soriano said. "They've been the ones who have been watching me for a while."

While Soriano said his decision was almost a "no-brainer" a month ago, he still wanted to make sure Whitter was the best choice.

"That's the thing," Soriano said. "I know I want to continue playing football next year but I also want to get a good education. So, Whittier makes good sense."

Soriano converted six field and 35 extra-point attempts for the Dons over the last two seasons.

Although quite an accomplished midfielder, Soriano said it was unlikely he would play soccer at Whittier.

Soriano's announcement came days before Cantwell Sacred Heart football coach Pete Smolin announced that he's sending a three-pack to the purple and gold, led by senior Chris Perez, a Daily News first-team linebacker.

The 5-foot-10, 210-pound Perez played both linebacker and tight end for the Cardinals, who split a Camino Real League title with a 6-5 record and advanced to the playoffs.

Perez certainly aided the cause, finishing tied for second in receptions (25) for 396 yards and three touchdowns.

natural abandonment, leading the Cardinals with 114 tackles (10.4 per game), two interceptions and one sack.
"He's such a talented player and student," Smolin said of Perez, who's already registered for classes. "This was just a natural fit."

Joining Perez are teammates Kimble Tillman and Joseph Loera.

Tillman, a Daily News second-team defensive back, was a do-everything player for the Cardinals, rushing for 72 yards and a touchdown while also hauling in 25 receptions for 477 yards and four scores.

Tillman also had 60 tackles and two interceptions on defense while he returned a total of 16 punts and kickoffs for 479 yards.

As for the aforementioned Loera, the running back recovered from a debilitating injury his junior year to lead the Cardinals in rushing with 828 yards (7.26 yards per carry) and eight touchdowns.

He also had 12 receptions for 111 yards and one score.

Smolin credited the energetic recruiting of Whittier College associate head coach Bill O'Boyle.

"I was king of surprised by how badly they wanted the players," Smolin said. "O'Boyle did a great job of keeping tabs on them."

Whittier's latest additions join a roster that already includes locals Daniel Cordova (St. Paul), Richard Duran (Schurr), James Constancio (St. Paul), David Novak (Whittier Christian), and Whittier natives David Taylor and Rehan Arshad.

Recruiting news from the San Diego Union-Tribune:
QuoteOther local athletes continuing their athletic careers in college:

FOOTBALL: Santa Fe Christian's Ben Burke (Division III Chapman); Westview's Connor O'Brian (Division III Chapman); Carlsbad's Max Miller (Division III Chapman); El Camino's Paul Register (Division III Occidental); University City's Federico Giacomelli (Division III Occidental); Kearny's Derrick Beebe (NAIA Midland Lutheran)..

I can't wait to say the name "Federico Giacomelli" over and over during our broadcasts.  I will put the old Montreal Expos' announcer to shame.

You'll be calling him Jocko in no time.

Here's a story about an Oxy recruit from Atascadero News:

Quote
Allen signs with Occidental College

Most multi-sport high school athletes who play sports at the college level pick one sport, but Logan Allen will get to play two for Occidental College next year.

"It's been a dream of mine for a long time to continue my athletic career and get a great education," Allen said.

After signing his letter of intent on Tuesday, Allen will play basketball and baseball for the Tigers. He is coming off a high school career in which he was named the basketball team's most valuable player two years in a row and earned all-league and all-county honors in both basketball and baseball. He is currently the starting shortstop for the Greyhounds.

Occidental College, a small, liberal arts college founded in 1887, is located in the northern part of Los Angeles and counts such notable figures as Jack Kemp and President Barack Obama among its alumni. The Tigers compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, part of the NCAA Division III. Other members of the conference include Caltech, Cal Lutheran, University of Redlands and University of La Verne.
...

Yet another uniformed sportswriter who doesn't know that no D-III institutions, NAIA schools, preparatory schools, junior colleges, or community colleges participate in the National Letter of Intent program.

Welcome to Oxy, Logan.

More SCIAC recruiting news, this time from the San Gabriel Valley Tribune:

QuoteSouth Hills linebacker Wayne Goss (6-1, 191) and defensive end Alex Barrios (6-2, 233) will continue their playing career at Division III Cal Lutheran, joining former Huskies standout Jacob Calderon, who was named to the 2008 American Football Coaches Association Division III All-America Team.

Goss and Barrios were both San Antonio League first-team selections and the heart and soul of the Huskies' defensive core.

South Hills coach Steve Bogan graduated from Cal Lutheran and he played with defensive coordinator Scott Beattie.

"It's a great place to play small college football," Bogan said. "It's a place that's close enough to home to come back and visit, and far enough away to be away. It's the best of both worlds, and you will graduate in four years.

"For Beattie, he's loving life, he saw Alex and Wayne play and he's been telling me they will make an immediate impact, and I think he's right. It's the perfect fit."

The Redlands football team participates in a similar tradition after Oxy beats the pants off them.

They'd be crazy not to!

What generous young people to donate their clothing to such a worthy cause, and the run enables them to get some needed exercise before finals.

Linfield would do well to consider such a charitable, healthy activity. As an alum, I would be willing to sit on the sidewalk in front of our house to make sure everyone got by safely, and render any necessary aid.

+1 Bob.  I don't think I could have set that one up any easier for you to knock out of the park.

Coco,

You could just set up with a stand with free teriyaki sticks for any young lady in need of nourishment.

coco

You bet, and water, Gatorade.  Anything to get them to stop for a couple minutes. Maybe you could bring this up to Coach Smith. The team could organize this as a community service event, like Helmets for Hunger.
