QuoteI actually think the long, long, long excerpts of stories from newspapers still cross the line over what they would consider copyright infringement. Even though you do link to them, the long excerpts eliminate the need for people to go to the story, which harms the copyright holder.

Let's try keeping the excerpts to three paragraphs and see how that goes. Thanks.

Hmmm

Saturday PLEASE get here.

Nice article today in the Santa Clarita Valley Signal about former Redlands running back Zach Schafer, who's playing in Finland for the Kuopio Steelers. Also, the Bakersfield Californian reported that Pete Mitchell entered fall practice as the top quarterback on Whittier's depth chart, and his younger brother, DB Alex Mitchell, was named the Poets' Rookie of the Year for preseason camp.

Regarding former SCIAC players. Former Whittier running back Anthony Pomponio is featured in Iron Man magazine October edition currently on news stands as a rising star in the "natural" Body building industry.

Whittier has posted their remaining position previews for the 2009 season here:
http://www.wcpoets.com/sports/fball/index

Of particular interest, the Poets have a transfer DB from the University of San Diego who last played in 2003:
QuoteJohnson will be in charge of one corner spot while the other side of the field will be occupied by 5-8, 180 pound, transfer, Allen Russell. The senior from the University of San Diego played for the Torero in 2003 where he had 34 tackles, three interceptions for 73 yards and eight pass break-ups.

There's an article in the Pasadena Star-News about this year's Whittier team, but it doesn't mention the transfer from USD.

Whittier has posted an impressive new media guide for Saturday's game against Sul Ross State:

It looks like Alesana Sausau, the transfer from San Joaquin Delta, will be the Poets' new starting QB.

Leopards Open 2009 Campaign Against Whitworth

The University of La Verne football squad will open its 2009 campaign this Saturday when it hosts visiting Whitworth University at Ortmayer Stadium.

La Verne welcomes several new players to the roster as third-year coach Andy Ankeny looks to improve upon a 2-7 season in 2008.

Representing the Northwest Conference, Whitworth heads into Saturday's contest looking for its first win after falling 48-31 at fifth-ranked Hardin-Simmons last Saturday in Abilene, TX.  The Pirates and Leopards will be meeting for the sixth straight season, but it will be the final meeting for some time. Last year Whitworth opened with a 22-13 win over La Verne in Spokane, WA.

The Pirates feature a potent rushing attack led by led by senior running back Adam Anderson, the 2007 and 2008 Northwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year.  Anderson tallied 229 all-purpose yards and a pair of touchdowns last week against Hardin-Simmons.

The Leopard offense has the luxury of two quality quarterbacks in Anthony Andre and Christian Winnewasser.  Andre passed for 1,423 yards last season with Winnewasser passing for 427 yards with 4 TDs.  The top returning pass receiver is senior Kenneth Chapman, who hauled in 12 passes for 224 yards and a pair of scores.

On defense the Leos return senior linebacker Branamier Courtney, a 2007 All-SCIAC selection who posted 63 tackles last season.

Saturday's kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 am.
Hail to the Orange, Hail to the Green,
Hail to the Leos, FIGHT ULV!!!

Interesting comments by Coach Hammer regarding past Senior leadership in the Whittier News Paper. The young coach will never be successful until he starts taking ownership from the top of the food chain on the success and leadership of his team. Seniors aren't the ones calling bone head plays on 3rd and short and putting the game during crunch time in the hands of inexperienced QB's and a defense jumping off side on 3rd and 4th and inches constantly pooch kicking kick offs and putting the opposing team at midfield , have you been to well coached Whittier game in a while?. Hopefully the program is getting it right with stadium upgrades press guides etc. Please bring in quality players that have some school spirit and are home grown and not a few thugs from local JC's  to save his job. Teach the game coach and dicipline your coaching staff. I am sure his former Seniors will love to speak to him regarding his comments. I know several of these  Whittier graduates and they are a class act.

If anyone is interested Whittier is down 21-14 in 2nd qtr. It appears they solved their QB problem. It will be interesting to see the impact of the Whittier  transfers have on the SCIAC

Saw the comments by Hammer. Not sure I am surprised but I am disappointed as I am sure many graduated Poets are as well.  Many players "bought" into the system and worked hard for Coach Hammer.  To be thrown under the bus is, well .........
