Eyewitness report from Claremont:

Oxy 42 Claremont 21 Final

Beautiful, sunny, warm day at CMS. On the field, Oxy scored 3 touchdowns in 2+ minutes in the third quarter and pulled away from the Stags.

The Tigers received the opening kickoff, but Scott Saunders was intercepted on the 27 and Claremont immediately scored on a pass from Scott Yingling to Nick Marineau. Oxy tied the game on a short run by Jason Haller. Oxy had several good first half scoring chances but Neil Martin missed a couple of field goals, and Haller fumbled the ball inside the CMS 5. It was 7-7 at the half.

Claremont took the second half kickoff and scored on a short run by D.J. Lilliard and led 14-7. Oxy then reeled off 3 TDs in short order: Scott Saunders hit Jordan Inabnit on a 21-yard TD pass at 9:20. Claremont fumbled on its next possession and Saunders hit Jason Lehman on a 19-yard TD pass at 7:45. Yingling was intercepted on Claremont's next possession, Haller scored on a 4-yard run at 7:01, and just like that it was 28-14. Yingling hit Mike Hirokawa on an 8-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 28-21, but that was as close as CMS would get. Oxy scored two 4th quarter TDs and put the game away.

Haller gained 155 net yards on 27 carries, and Saunders was 20-for-29 for 252 yards and 4 TDs. Lehman had a great day with 5 catches for 90 yards and 3 TDs. The Tigers outgained the Stags 445-267.

Nice win for Oxy after shaking off their first half doldrums. Looking forward to Oxy beating Redlands for the 6th straight time.

Well I have to say a pretty disappointing trip out to Thousand Oaks. :-\ As this being my second year watching the Mighty Poets in action; the first was not very impressive at all, I had high hopes. So high hopes for the season, as every team should have (for the most part), especially with some new changes. Start the spring with a new Offensive Coordinator, Defensive Coordinator, having the head coach being in charge of over seeing it all as he pleases, and best of all... NEW OFFENSE   ;D !!!! As a bystander for the past year and a half of "change", nothing but high hopes and expectations. But those were quickly diminished after the performance that Whittier put on out at Cal Lutheran. Glimpses of last year of personal fouls (by #1), offensive line mishaps, and worst of all... Just outright getting our butt kicked. I will not be the one to critique as I am in the stands and not a football "guru" as these coaches claim themselves to be, but it was a poor and pathetic showing. Congrats to Cal Lutheran, well coached, hungry for victory as well as playing the game with class and pride. Makes me wish I was sitting on the other side of the stands sometimes.

Fear the Poet

I made the trip out to Cal Lu yesterday.  Needless to say it was a huge disapointment. As Hammer time above me mentioned. A day at a Whittier football game wouldn't be the same with a personal foul against a certain DB. I wish the team would take a stand against that type of stuff. its not like its making a difference having him in there. Maybe if coaches start worrying more about character..we would be in a better place.  The team just doesn't seem prepared to play. After hearing about the first two games(I wasn't there) it seemed that things were going the right direction. It Didn't appear that way yesterday.

I saw that game yesterday many times before..I felt like I was having deja vu.

Lucy and I have many friends still in the program and we are still very much involved with the College and will fall short of bad mouthing everything. All I can say is that I hope things improve quickly. There are alot of good people in the program that deserve better.

The Athletic Director and President are working hard to improve things and I think in time it will be better. Stay with em Poet fans

Dead Poet Society

I have been trying to take the high road...but after reading some of the previous posts, I will put in a few of my own.

I wasn't at the game but watched online. As I warned before the season started, IMO Hammer has brought in some players of less than stellar personal quality with bad attitudes, poor work habits and ethics. This IMO is not only bad for the program but bad for the school. All for what? These punks are not that good. They continually get away with murder, walk around in groups with a chip on their shoulders, embarrass the team and school with their "attitudes" on the field and no one in the program says a corrective word to them. IMO they are an embarrassment to the team, the college and the 100 years of Poet football.

As has been mentioned, the President, AD and alumni have bent over backwards for Hammer and football. It is past time..  seven years as a coach in the program including starting his fourth year as head coach for major progress to be made. All we have seen is little if any improvement and a lot of talk, excuses and promises.

The Poet family deserves better than what we are seeing. Either Hammer does it this year...or even part way through this year or IMO a MAJOR change needs to occur..and not going to Billy O' Boyle.

100 years of Redlands football. Well done and surprised that I'm in one of the photos.

Congrats to The University of Redlands for achieving a huge milestone with their 100th season, and for their committment to having a program and a team the SCIAC can be proud of.  The picture slideshow was also very cool.

Happy to see the Oxy offense show its potential with a more balanced attack.  Sounds like the only thing stopping them was themselves, with some missed red zone opportunities (goal line fumble, tough day for the K Martin, etc.).

Sorry to hear about the current state of the Whittier program.  It seemed like they had something to build on 2-3 years back with some teams that threatened (and even beat) some of the SCIAC big boys, as well as the new facilities.  It's also unfortunate that the JUCO players are (allegedly) bringing the program down.  Oxy always had some JUCO guys when I played there and they were all quality people, and guys like that deserve a place in the SCIAC without a doubt.

Whittier continuing to play and showcase #1, the guy everyone is talking about, is a joke. If he could play defense half as well as he could spit he might avoid getting embarrased on a weekly basis. I remember his own teammates apoligizing for him, no one respects him. Beating him play after play was like blowing out Whittier every year, you expect to do it but it feels great nonetheless... because they are Whittier.

come on my man, "because they are Whittier" ?  I mentioned that I am dissapointed with the team's progress, but was that neccesary. Although my son is no longer on the team, (retired after his soph. year last season)we still love the program and many young men and families still involved.

Young FTP still attends the College and loves it. ( as much as a kid could love school anyway )  :)

Good luck this season to all the sciac teams..lets hope everyone stays injury free and we have a tight race to the finish.

FTP - an interesting set of observations.  First, CAL LU is a very good football team and will be in the mix for the SCIAC Championship.  The new coaches and personnel for the Poets will take a while to get all the kinks out. You can begin to see how things will fit together. For the first quarter, and half of the second, the Poets played to their potential and its was an exciting game.  Mistakes will happen to young teams particularly when playing a very good team like CAL LU.  The key mistake in the second quarter turned the game very quickly, but the Poets didn't give up.

As the pieces come together, the Poets should continue to improve.  They are already much improved over last year.  Their potential was shown in the early parts of the game Saturday.  Sausau is a very good quarterback, and as he improves so will the team.  The Poets will have some exciting games the rest of the way.  The best to LR.

Dead Poet - clearly you have an axe to grind with the coaches, the players and the team.   You ought to be ashamed of yourself for the racist comments that were clearly aimed at the black players on the team.  The Poets are a broad mix of Hispanics, Anglos, Blacks, Asians, and Pacific Islanders.  Diversity is good for the team, and the team  gains strength from all its members.

I feel complelled to put in my two cents worth here even though FTP addressed it already. !!  Whittier may be struggling with its football program currenlty, and hopefully some changes will be made (we do know that the athletic director and president are closely monitoring these issues) but a majority of their athletic programs (such as baseball, basketball, water polo, etc) have come a long way and are doing well.  That being said, Whittier as a whole is a phenomenal college and IMO should not be referred to as "Because they are Whittier"  As already pointed out by FTP, although little Ricky no longer plays football he still loves this college.  Ultimately isn't the goal here to walk away with a great education intact??   We may not always like what is going on but we bleed Purple and Gold and will continue to support the Poets in any way that we can.   :)

Whew,

It's been a long while since I've stepped onto this board.

First off, Good to see D.O.C awhile back at the Oxy-wildcat game. I accidently caught him chugging on what appeared to be a PBR at the North parking lot near Campus Dinning. I asked him if I could have one, but, was told that he doesn't support underage drinking. Good to see ya old surfer dude.

Secondly, it sounds like our Poets are in the same position as the Raiders of up north. Geeze, please tell me that several guys will not bring this team and College down. I hope they seriously find what's wrong and solve their internal problems before it becomes a horrific season for the Seniors. Like most have already pointed out, some of these guys have been on teams that have beaten the Big Boys (i.e. Oxy and others), it would be a shame if they walk out 0-9.

Third, Gosh do I find the ULV football tweeting hilarious. Not only are they tweeting, but, they are doing it using some of the funniest spelling/grammar and gosh knows what. Sure makes me want to donate my alumni funds for their English classes.

Fourth, I can't believe the Biggest Game that Oxy always circles on our calendar is already here. In saying so, I hope to see another exciting game at the rock as both teams square off in a battle to see who comes on top of the SCIAC race. After playing well with the Cats not to long ago, I feel confident that the Tigers will do everything in their ability to use such experience and be able to fight off a talented Puppy team. Although, the game might go down the wire, I honestly believe that the Oxy D will step it up a bigger notch and help provide the energy and excitement (as they certainly did during the Tiger-v.s Wildcat game) for both the Offense and Special teams. Speaking of offense, Props goes out to them as a unit for doing well on the ground this past weekend against the Stags.

Anywho's, sounds like Cal lu will be doing everything possible to also compete once again for the Crown. That will be another exciting game as well.

You are the one who should be ashamed of yourself. You are the racist. I mentioned no one by race. You drew your own conclusions by your personal experiences and seemingly your own racist views, not mine.

There are good and bad from every group you mentioned. Why you picked on blacks as being the negative group is beyond how I was raised. I guess you were raised and see people differently.

Shame on you.

BTW Hammer has been at Whittier 7 years

I will address my first problem and that is "firstdown" putting words into others mouths. DPS did not attack anyone racially, not even to the littlest degree. He did in fact attack the character of some of the players that play for the Mighty Poets. Playing for the institute you attend is more than going on the field and playing the game, it is representing your institute on and off the field with the highest class. But if you have seen #1 play, he is a selfish player who is decent but is very undisciplined and in my opinion plays the game how it shouldn't be played. Remember my first year was last year, and I saw #1 receive TWO personal fouls against CMS. These personal fouls were not for anything besides talking back to the referees and being disrespectful. I am almost positive (and don't quote me), he received a personal foul 6 out of the 9 games we attended. Well, I see a major problem with this. I have more concern with the lack of discipline and outright respect for the coaches and players, as well as the lack of character Whittier wants representing the institute. Recruiting goes above and beyond trying to bring in "players", academics as well as character. I understand that as a coach your job is to win, outright just win. But there is more to it than that (read up on Binghamton Men's Basketball). So "firstdown", take a step back and look at the big picture...

I am still a HUGE supporter of the Poets, and I want nothing but the best for my son and the players that step out on that field with him. As a normal bystander, I do see things to criticize... And BTW Kingsmen4, low blow, especially after I gave Cal Lu credit for playing with class.... I take that back!
