"The Poets are a broad mix of Hispanics, Anglos, Blacks, Asians, and Pacific Islanders"

Geezz I thought I was watching young American men play football.  I guess not.

BTW your mention of diversity....

It is our commonality that has been our strength as a people. People from many lands, races and religions...not forgetting who they are, where they came from or the language that they spoke...but putting that slightly in the back for the common good ....

You look at race. I look at attitude, actions, work ethic, performance and results.

Next firstdowner compare the stats of last years Cal Lu game with this years. Oppsseee

You also talk about how good Cal Lu is this year. They were good last year..and the year before. As long as a school, coach, team or players keep using that excuse for their performance and losses to a "better" team, they will never be on the same level as the "better" team.. That is the point of one of my complaints and should be the goal of Whittier football.... To be as good or better than Oxy, Redlands, Cal Lu on and on..

Stop from being the whipping boy, easy mark  and laughing stock of the conference. Until that attitude really sinks in at Whittier, instead of excuse after excuse, wait until next year, I didn't have this. I didn't have that B S ....then nothing will change.

BTW firstdowner.

Nice to see someone so interested in Wabash football care about us out here in Whittier.

Oh I almost forgot. Coach Hammer went to Wabash.  LOL

Pomona suffered a brutal last-second loss to Chapman this past Saturday, as reported in one of the local papers:

QuotePomona-Pitzer was dealt a 23-20 defeat by Chapman in a rare night game in Claremont...

The Sagehens (2-1) went ahead 20-17 when junior quarterback Jacob Caron engineered a 94-yard drive that took six minutes and ended with his 12-yard run with 23 seconds left.

But Chapman (2-1) got into field goal position with a 43-yard pass that took the ball to the Sagehens' 6. The Panthers were setting up for a game-tying field goal but the snap went awry and kicker Jimmy Adranley picked up the ball and threw it into the end zone, where sophomore John Stanley made the catch as time expired.

Kingsmen4

"And BTW Kingsmen4, low blow, especially after I gave Cal Lu credit for playing with class.... I take that back!"

You can't really take it back that CLU plays with class... If you said it than it must have come across that way through the play and actions in the games you witnessed, regardless of my comment.

I have a large deal of respect for nearly all of the teams in the SCIAC, because of the level of class and/or competition they have shown over my career at CLU. Occidental and Pomona are two teams that come to mind at the top of that list, they always have guys that go all out for 4 quarters, and play with a high level of class - Not to mention very solid and humble coaches. IN MY EXPERIENCE (because that is all I can draw from) Whittier was never a classy team and never competed to the level of other SCIAC teams.

It is sad, because they did have some classy players (who apologized for the actions of their teammates more than once) and what seemed like good guys. But unfortunately for the program that is largely overshadowed when you have players that spit into their opponents facemasks, talk trash, and receive personal fouls without displaying any sort of competetive or winning spirit, much less class.

It was evident after playing them for 4 years that if you got a lead on Whittier, they weren't coming back and would tend to quit. Maybe not certain players, but there is not much one tough nose guard can do to get his whole team on the same page with him and play with pride (which he did to the utmost, in every game I played in and watched on film).

Whittier is a program that I lacked respect for because of the way they carried themselves as a whole, and that explains the comment. Not a personal shot at anyone, just an honest opinion based on my own personal experience.

When you have a player that is widely known by even his own program's fans as trouble for the team, but continues to play and do the same stupid things on the field for two years now, it only solidifies the way I feel about the program and their values.

Not much else I can say, I still feel "they are just Whittier", and to me that means the Whittier Football program... not Whittier College in general, or their followers on a d3board, or Richard Nixon. I can't comment on anything else because I played football, not water polo or basketball, or badminton (though I did try out).

Wow, this is the most chatter about Whittier football since George Allen and Don Coryell prowled the sidelines for the Poets. If Whittier was actually any good, then this would be a really interesting discussion. Alas...

OxyBob, go back to posting quotes (that someone else wrote, NOT YOU) from newspapers and doing nothing but sitting and researching these articles that not very many people care about. Maybe there is so much "chatter" about Whittier Football because they do have a fan base and Alumni that actually care a lot about what is going on and maybe want some changes made. We care about Whittier as a whole. We have tons of pride for Whittier, and we want nothing but the best for Whittier and its players. JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE ON THIS BOARD OXYBOB! That is why we are voiceing our opinion.

Kingsmen4-- There are a lot of things I agree with you on, and that is why we (as parents and fans) are speaking up to show that we do not agree with the way Whittier football carries themselves. Like I said earlier, this results in recruting quality STUDENT athletes(and no firstdown, this is NOT a racist statement as you accuse others of earlier), the lack of respect that the players do NOT have for their coaches, and overall self discipline. The game should be played with class, desire and respect. I am not sure if this stems from the coaches not demanding this, or the recruiting (which also stems from the coaches). But overall, what I am saying is that there is NO reason why Whittier football should be in the shape it is in. Whittier has an outstanding campus, faculty, academic standing, facilities, and support staff to do the right things... We are upset because Whittier should be at least putting up a fight til the fourth quarter ends with class, pride, and desire to win the game (rather than having the second and third string CLU team come in in the late 3rd quarter)... And maybe even giving some of the SCIAC teams a battle for a win here and there.

I think it was Charlie Weis that said -- I would rather lose with the players that do the right things, rather than win with the players that do the wrong things... Not his EXACT words (because we know OxyBob will try to belittle someone for posting something that might have a few incorrect words) but it was somewhere along those lines. It would be wrong to sit back and not say anything about our current situation. Good luck to all on Saturday, it will be my first trip to Chapman, and I hope it ends in a good fashion.  ;D

While perusing the Huffington Post, I read an item about a course offered at Oxy in the Critical Theory and Social Justice program. I looked in the Oxy course catalog and found that indeed it was true.

Quote180. STUPIDITY.

Stupidity is neither ignorance nor organicity, but rather, a corollary of knowing and an element of normalcy, the double of intelligence rather than its opposite. It is an artifact of our nature as finite beings and one of the most powerful determinants of human destiny. Stupidity is always the name of the Other, and it is the sign of the feminine. This course in Critical Psychology follows the work of Friedrich Nietzsche, Gilles Deleuze, and most recently, Avital Ronell, in a philosophical examination of those operations and technologies that we conduct in order to render ourselves uncomprehending. Stupidity, which has been evicted from the philosophical premises and dumbed down by psychometric psychology, has returned in the postmodern discourse against Nation, Self, and Truth and makes itself felt in political life ranging from the presidency to Beevis and Butthead. This course examines stupidity.

Looks like the course was given at the wrong school:

Hello all,
My son plays at Redlands.  This is his last year.  He has had high school friends play at some of the other SCIAC schools.  We can say nothing negative about Redlands or their football program, and can honestly say we are proud of his choice.  He has made some life long friends, and they have all stayed or eaten at our home.  Four years ago, we lost to Whittier.  A friend of my sons played there and we met and talked after the game.  Great kid!  I'd be mad if a kid spit in my sons face but I dont think we should judge an entire program by the actions of one idiot.  I think it was only two years ago, Whittier beat OXY (67-61) in a real shootout.

We are going to tailgate in OXY's parking lot.  Any OXY fans or anyone else for that matter are welcome.  Heres to a great game, no injuries, and if you dont mind me saying so, a REDLANDS victory.  We got a bunch of hungry kids that havent beaten OXY in a while and we are due.  See you Saturday.

Pomona suffered a brutal last-second loss to Chapman this past Saturday, as reported in one of the local papers

Unluckily for Pomona I paid off the Chapman snapper to ensure that I went 4-0 on my game predictions.

As for the whole Whittier debacle:

As a lineman I never had contact with #1 so no comment there.

I usually try to assume the best about people/SCIAC programs, but I have seen three things that make me think of Whittier as a football team that lacks class.  One was when they beat us two years ago.  Instead of waiting for us to hand over the Shoes trophy, their entire team just ran over and took it.  I can certainly understand how excited they were, but it comes across to me as classless only because it's rude and is begging for a fight to break out.

The second thing was my frosh year in '05.  Some fans found it necessary to heckle us from directly behind our bench with a hilarious "Go back to Oregon State Andy Collins" (He went to Oregon).  That was fine, but they also jumped a former player and his father in the parking lot during the game.  Even though these people may have nothing to do with the actual football team, opposing players associate it and it nonetheless creates a general aura of classlessness around the team.

The third thing also happened two years ago and I won't mention it here because I think its a bit inappropriate, but lets just say it was another lack of respect/humbleness thing.

Unrelated to the above, the racial accusations were totally out of line and if I were that person I would apologize and delete that post.

Stop_Its_Hammer_Time

Not surprised at all that OxyBob did not have something to say towards the topic of conversation; just some smart aleck comment ATTEMPTING to belittle someone. "A "smart alec" or "smart aleck" is a person regarded as obnoxiously self-assertive and an impudent person."

-- WOW, someone else can copy and paste quotes from different websites, GENIUS!

Nihon Tiger -- That is disappointing to hear that those three memories stick out more than anything. That is one of the reasons why I am voicing my opinion and saying we need "change". And I am hopeful for getting supporters to say "YES WE CAN!"    That is for all you Oxy people   ;D

Good luck to all this weekend!

BULLDOGALUM52

Wow, lot of action on the board this week, well guess i gotta give my two cents otherwise Nihon's going to think Oxy has this one in the bag.....

Let's face it history does repeat itself, however there comes a time when enough is enough, I really do believe that this years Bulldog team has the talent and the oppurtunity to finally get over this infamous Oxy hump. Mr. Selway threw 5 TD's last week, Oxy has 6 int's half of which came against Menlo, Also Danny has only been sacked ONCE through three games! Props to my bulldog brothers T-Mcbride and the O-line doin the dirty work! Oxy in turn has allowed 5 sacks but also has gotten to the QB five times, looks like whoever can protect the QB will have the best shot....  air game I believe goes to Redlands. The Bulldogs have out rushed opponents by 379 yds, compare that to OXY giving up 100 more than they have gained, I think the edge clearly goes to Redlands....

Dont forget that ever important Special Teams, The dogs gain about 7 yards after each kickoff and punt are totaled compared with OXY gaining about 10 yds, ill give the home team a slight advantage here..... But the bottom line I think comes down to turnovers, whoever secures the ball and takes it away from the other team most will come out victorious!

I do realize(being a former player) that numbers can only show half the picture, so whichever team is most focused and comes out with the most sustained intensity will win, that being said 35-21 dogs, no bias here! lol

On a side note, I was recruited by Whittier my senior year in high school, and even though I live about 15 minutes away from the campus, and the immense amount of potential talent that Whittier is surround by at local high schools, I always felt that the program itself lacked a leader, whether it be the Administration, Head Coach or really anyone. It's a shame they cant put together consistently good teams together....

Other than that I will be at Oxy, hopefully my former teammates, past and present alumni can take away the "sixth man" at the D.W. Patterson field.

Go DOGS!
It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.
