1982 was a big year in Oxy football history. Dale Widolff took over as the Tigers' head coach. In Oxy's third game of the season, the Tigers played the University of San Diego. CBS televised the game nationally to provide pro football-starved fans some entertainment during the NFL players strike. (Commenting on the Oxy-USD match-up, Hank Stram said, "It's the same game with smaller and slower people.") Oxy won the game, 34-20, led by "Chevrolet Player of the Game" Vance Mueller, who went on to have a decent career with the Raiders. With all of the attention, attendance at Oxy games swelled from an average of 157 to 243. The City of Los Angeles, responding to the crush of extra fans, installed signal lights at the intersection of York Bl. and Eagle Rock Bl. to control all of the traffic. After several closed-door meetings, then-UCLA athletic director Bob Fischer finally convinced Oxy president Richard Gilman to switch all of Oxy's football games from afternoon to nighttime starts to accommodate UCLA fans traveling to and from the Rose Bowl. Afterward, Dr. Gilman said, "I didn't even know we had a football team, but if it helped UCLA, I was all for it."

They serve beer at the UCLA games, and the Oxy attendance swelled because some fans stopped by Oxy on their way home in order to pee.  Some even stayed for the marching band at halftime to see which tuba player was going to cross the X in the Oxy script spell out.  8)

Solid win for Whittier over Chapman 21-6

Whittier dominated both sides of ball.

The score does not reflect Whittier's dominance

Congrats to Whittier players and coaching staff.

What a football game.  Oxy again shows what they are made of.

A HUGE win for Oxy and a dagger in the heart of Redlands.

Congrat's to all Oxy fans..........

Fear the Poet

WOW!  The Poets worked up a number 6 on Chapman. The defense dominated and Brandon Johnson was indeed under control and played magnificent. Others that stood out...Brandon Boehm,Tyson Shilling and #15 made two huge plays to close the deal. Congrats to the offensive line for stepping up and dominating the chapman defense. The running game was incredible.

Great game and am very proud and happy for the players and coaches. Well done men!

It was nice to watch the players and coaches celebrate after the game. They were very excited and rightfully so. I great performance.

what a difference a week makes. In a twist(to me anyway) Coach Hammer was not on the sideline during the game and i was told he was in the box calling the game from there. I saw him on the field after celebrating. I have never seen him so pumped...good job Coach!!

Eyewitness report from Eagle Rock:

Oxy 27, Redlands 24 OT

Great second half comeback by Oxy. Redlands dominated the first half. Dan Selway looked unstoppable as he completed pass after pass to Evan Reuter and Brian Putnam. Joe MacMillan's 47-yard FG gave UR a 24-10 halftime lead, and it looked like Redlands would snap Oxy's 5-game winning streak against the Bulldogs.

After a scoreless third quarter, Jason Haller scored for Oxy on a 1-yard run to cap an 80-yard, 12 play drive, helped along by some really dumb penalties by Redlands, and Oxy trailed 24-17. Oxy later tied the game with 4:20 to go on a 30-yard pass from Scott Saunders to Jordan Washington. After Oxy punt artist Alex Groh pinned UR on its own 2, the Bulldogs drove the length of the field, but Joe McMillan's FG attempt with 3 seconds to go was blocked by (EDIT) Jordan Washington (his second block of the game), and the game went to OT.

In overtime, Oxy's Neil Martin nailed a 36-yard FG to give Oxy the lead. Selway threw 2 incomplete passes and was then sacked by Jesse Fisher on 3rd down. Redlands decided to go for it on 4th down rather than give McMillan another chance to hit a long FG, but Selway was intercepted in the end zone by Chris Washington, and Oxy celebrated its 6th straight victory over Redlands.

Redlands dominated the stats, outgaining Oxy 467-296, and held the Tigers to only 25 net rushing yards, but Oxy proved to be more poised and vastly more disciplined, as Redlands took 9 penalties for 76 yards, while Oxy was only penalized once for 5 yards.

It's great to be a Tiger!

Wow  what a come back.  Nice recap OB.  I was following the score on the board but there were not a lot of posts.

OB so how does an additional couple hundred fans make that kind of difference?  I know your are an expert historian and probably were at every game, it just seems like it wouldn't make a big difference.

Personally I like night games.

Congrats to Oxy on a great win.  I feel sorry for the UR guys, sounds like they played a great game and let a W slip away.

Fans were negligible since OxyBob was texting RFB too much. They got into the game only when it looked like a tie.

Quotesome really dumb penalties by Redlands

That was a key. Redlands looked like they could take on LINFIELD the first 20 minutes of the game AND the 90 yard drive at the end of the game. OXY won it with heart and the really dumb penalties. If the Redlands field goal ( 24 ) did not have the rotation to go through OXY would have run at the end of regulation.

Congrats to Oxy players and fans on a great comeback win and also thanks to OxyBob for the updates since I could not be there. Good luck to Oxy the rest of the way.

I would add that turnovers also destroyed Redlands.  I watched this game on the video feed and it (the video) was not bad.  I assume they made improvements from the Linfield game.  I also watched the Redlands v. Whitworth game and quite frankly, it was a similar performance by Selway and the Bulldogs but with a different outcome.  They looked dominant in the first half but left the door open and then allowed their opponent to come back in.  Oxy, being a better (and healthier) team than the Rats was able to take advantage and come up with the win.  Very exciting game to watch----should have just driven down there and seen it in person but as I told DOC--my wife wasn't keen on my being gone after ignoring her and the baby for most of the day (Linfield game, Dodger game, etc.)

One of the best games you would want to attend.  Redlands so dominated the first half I thought about hitting the road at half...glad I didn't.  First half Selway to Putman was unstoppable.  Second half Redlands went away from that successul tandem until the 80 yard drive OB referenced.  That let Oxy chip away.  As good as Selway was..and he really is good.. the Oxy QB Saunders doesn't get rattled and hangs in there to get it done.  Before watching Oxy/Redlands I saw Pomona/CLU...both Oxy and Redlands will have to deal with the Kingsmen.  What happens if CLU beats Oxy then Redlands beats CLU and they all run the table with the rest of the schedule all with 1 SCIAC loss ?  Hmmm... this one is a long way from over !

Nihon Tiger

Awesome win by Oxy last night.  Not sure if it's the 6 straight loss "curse" hanging over their heads or what, but the Bulldogs again had trouble staying poised against Oxy this year with more crucial turnovers and untimely penalties.  If Redlands manage to sneak into the playoffs, they will be serious trouble for whoever they face; it was obvious to everyone watching what a talented team they are.

Also a HUGE kudos to Oxy's special teams units.  I would venture to say that Oxy spends more time practicing special teams more intensely than the rest of the SCIAC schools, and it payed off once again.  "Punt artist" and #1 Big Lebowski fan Groh is obviously a stud, but the Tigers' other special teams units are stellar as well.  Shoutouts to Neil Martin for his 2 clutch FGs, J. Washington for the 2 blocked kicks, the down-it punt team, and human battering ram Mike Jorgenson for making kickoffs fun to watch and turning return wedges into bowling pins.

Good luck to the Bulldogs for the rest of the season and congrats OXY on the big win!

poetry in motion

Congtats to the Poets. I listened to the game on the Chapman radio feed and the Poets definately won the battle on the offensive and defensive line. Both teams could not convert in the red zone but the Poets did enough to overcome some turnovers. Looks like Chapman has some decisions to make at QB. Next Redlands at Redlands oh boy! Good hard clean smash mouth football Poets way to go!

Oxy you have my respect! what a come back.
