QuoteAlso a HUGE kudos to Oxy's special teams units.
Alex Groh is a team player without a doubt. I would think any All-American punter would want to keep his stats up but he does what the game dictates.

But what is up with making him run almost 10 yards for a first down?!!! Talk about risk management.

It's fun to watch him do various punts. The one downed by Washington at the 2 yard line (before the Redlands classic drive) you could see coming. He line drives 'em when need be and appears to put English on some punts. I do not recollect any 50 yard sky-highs like against LINFIELD, where the returners kept playing him shorter than his range.

They serve beer at the UCLA games, and the Oxy attendance swelled because some fans stopped by Oxy on their way home in order to pee.  Some even stayed for the marching band at halftime to see which tuba player was going to cross the X in the Oxy script spell out.

Had dinner at The Oinkster last night before the game. Saw many UCLA fans drowning their sorrows in pastrami sandwiches. Some diners noticed my Oxy hat and sweatshirt and thanked me profusely for Oxy's 7:00 p.m. start time which spared 77,819 Bruins fans from unnecessary traffic jams. They also praised Oxy for the cleanliness of its restrooms.

What happens if CLU beats Oxy then Redlands beats CLU and they all run the table with the rest of the schedule all with 1 SCIAC loss ?

I think we've had this conversation before. I believe if it's a 3-way tie then the no-repeat "Rose Bowl Rule" applies, and the conference AQ would go to the team which has not appeared in the D-III playoffs most recently. That would be CLU. Of course, the Kingsmen could end all doubt by beating both Oxy and Redlands. To fend off that possibility, I will start praying for rain.

Had the pleasure of watching the UCLA-Oregon game but saw a good defensive battle turn into a whooping in only 4 minutes and 54 seconds. Thats how long it took Oregon to score 21 points. Bad loss for the Bruins.

However I have never been part of such a heartbreaking loss either as a player or fan. Redlands clearly dominated that game and even if I wasn't a Redlands fan I would say the better team lost the game. But as always the scoreboard dictates the winner.

Penalties always seem to bite Redlands in the butt late in games, especially against OXY. I saw Dan Selway score a touchdown with 8 seconds left only to be nullified by an offsides penalty. I understand Coach Maynard's thinking by trying a field goal on third down, but Oxy just ran over our field goal unit to take the game into overtime.

Hats off to OXY, good luck the rest of the season. I look forward to seeing what kind of History this Redlands team is able to achieve for the rest of the season.

P.S.- Thank you Irish Dog for the wonderful bbq chicken, tailgating is always fun with alumni and current player parents. Your son did an awesome job last night on the o-line.
It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.

Come on, OB, you fell for that? Guy's just trying to build up his posts. You know that.
Standing on the cement steps vacated by the Occidental drum circle as the second Redlands kick was about to be blocked, he pondered the same question aloud

QuoteWhat happens if CLU beats Oxy then Redlands beats CLU and they all run the table with the rest of the schedule all with 1 SCIAC loss ?

and I vaguely answered

Quoteno-repeat "Rose Bowl Rule" applies

as I snuck in a "He's gonna miss it. He's too shook from the first one"

CalCat answered his own question, as all good teachers are wont to do

"That would be CLU."

And you might get El Nino.

Again, it was a surprise and a pleasure last night to make the acquaintance of Brock Arndt, who spied my catdomealumni.com tee shirt.
Outstanding young feller.

I watched the video feed.  Redlands looked like the better team.  They are second behind Mt. Union in run defense.

There are no instant replays.  It shows how spoiled we all are with that feature.

I thought the key play was when Redlands threw a long pass on 4th and two sometime in the third quarter.  They were not successful and it gave Oxy hope.  But had they connected like they did with the long pass on their own two on the final drive, I would not be making this comment.

I hope Redlands doesn't let down.  They can still get in the playoffs and beat just about anyone.

Absolutely.  Watching the Oxy Linfield game a couple weeks back, there were a few times where my mates and I wanted to "take a look at the replay . . . " . . . and talked about how accustomed to that feature we've all become . . .

Of course, any of you fans who care to fund the acquisition and placement of a giant screen tv and the necessary filming and playback infrastructure on Patterson Field, feel free to send me PM and I'll put you in touch with the right folks!!

Congrats to the Tigers who move up to no. 18 in the top 25, and the Bulldogs who dropped, but hung in there at no. 25.  Cal Lu picks up it's first vote of the year (that I've noticed).

If you SCIAC's missed the front page blog Saturday you should check it.
D3Keith was watching O vs R and updating the blog. A fair take on the action. (You mean he watched the same game we did?)

If the NEFC can get two teams in, then the SCIAC certainly can.

Interesting tidbit: Current starting QB Saunders was the down-it punter a couple years back while Groh only took the long ones.  While I'm on the subject, Saunders also ran the goal line "jumbo" offense instead of Goltz for a while.

How to make your Oxy football viewing experience infinitely more entertaining: watch Jorgenson (#28) on every Oxy kickoff.

Wow . . . I'm still coming down from that game a full 24-hours later!  Anyway, here is a link to some images from last night's thriller at Patterson Field (I am amazed I took any shots amidst all of the excitement):

Keith McMillan's take:

Quote
Selway runs in the game-winning TD, except that there were perhaps not enough men on the line? Illegal formation.
...

Wow, Oxy outright stole that game. No worse way to lose than to actually have scored the winning TD only to have it undone by a not lining up right penalty.

After Oxy sacked Selway for a 10-yard loss on 3rd down in overtime, I wondered why the Bulldogs didn't try another long field goal instead of going for a TD. Redlands place kicker Joe McMillan had already hit a 47-yard FG at the end of the first half (the ball did hit the crossbar and bounced over, but still he made it). Redlands head coach Mike Maynard explained his excuses reasoning in an interview in the local San Bernardino paper:

Quote
Maynard admitted he played the overtime differently because of his lack of faith in the kicking game. Occidental had possession first and settled for the field goal. Redlands couldn't try and match that. Instead it went for the touchdown with a sack of quarterback Dan Selway on third down the fatal play.

"We had lost some faith in the kicking game and that did play a major role," he said. "We just thought that was our best shot."

Maynard tried to deflect the blame from junior kicker Joe MacMillan, a second-team all-conference selection last year. MacMillan missed field goal tries of 19 and 30 yards, the last coming in the closing seconds of regulation, but made a 47-yarder in the first half.

Maynard said there were other factors which also figured into a missed PAT on the first touchdown. MacMillan had a new holder in Jared Fink. Usual holder Brenden Barkate, also the team's leading receiver, was out with a knee injury and didn't even dress.

"Our kicking plays were just very slow to develop and the rhythm was all off," Maynard said.

"If you're even a little off it can be very disruptive."

MacMillan has the leg strength because he's 3 for 3 on kicks from 40 to 49 yards but he is just 1 of 5 from 30 to 39 yards.

Jordan Washington had the rhythm down: Snap, rush, block the kick, snap, rush, block the kick...

Great, then the selection committee bean counters will make the two SCIAC teams play each other in the first round of the playoffs.

No offense here O people but it could be one of those Redlands plays CLU the last game of the season and then again the next week in the playoffs, Yawn.
